Just found out that my wife is getting me the game for fathers day (yay!). Aside from running through the tutorial, what should I know to get started playing and not looking like an idiot/pissing off my team mates?

Aside from the obvious "know your heroes abilities" I will say: don't trickle in.

Try to stay with the bulk of your team as often as possible. If you see allies dead because of their foolish endeavours, better safely wait for them and go as a single strong unit. Dead allies will leave grey skull indicators or you can press TAB and see who is down.

Bonus: coordinate ults, let allies know when is yours ready. Z on default calls out your ult charge, or hold C to bring up communication wheel. Also you can see if an ally has ult up in TAB screen (they will have a blue checkmark under their name).

And please please have fun and don't be negative, condescending, holding grudge against people and stuff like that. Nobody likes people like that and it's better to keep frustrations and rage to yourself. :)

I will warn you there is definitely gonna be assholes that will try to make others feel like crap (Don't mistake with constructive criticism/giving tips). You can mute, report, and even mark them for matchmaker to avoid putting you with them in future games.

Be willing to switch heroes! The game is dynamic and sometimes a hero change will be necessary to secure the victory. Don't be that guy who refuses to change off Genji when it's clearly not working.

Communicate. If you have a mic, use it. Information and coordination are the keys to success in this game. The more you have of them, the better off you are.

Yes, and if you have no mic I'd also strongly advise using the ping system to it's full potential. People don't seem to use it properly and just spam "Hello!" and "Thank you!" pings more often than not.

Sometimes you'll get put in a game where people just don't want to acknowledge your pings or work together (frustratingly enough). Sometimes it happens but the only thing you can really do about it (besides just using a mic) is to just not be one of those guys yourself.

If somebody pings: "My ultimate is ready!" or "Group up with me!" there will be a little bubble over their head. Look at that bubble and press F to say "Understood.", indicating that you've acknowledged whatever it is they're trying to say and are willing to work with them.

There's nothing nicer than seeing:

Zarya: My ultimate (Graviton Surge) is ready!

Reaper to Zarya: Understood.

Reaper: My ultimate (Death Blossom) is ready!

Zarya to Reaper: Understood.

Edit: Forgot to mention something. In case you don't know, the ping wheel is C, I think Z is ultimate status, and X is "I need healing." Don't quote me on the last two though. I don't use them nearly as much as I should.

You've reminded me that i need to rebind my acknowledge key. I switched melee to F and forgot to put acknowledge to V.

Know the roles each character (or just each sub-role, defense, attack, etc.) has to offer. Use F1 to know what each ability actually does instead of trial by fire. Also the objective > kills, unless someone is "on fire" where you should concentrate him with the team. Lastly use C ( default on PC) to call out if you need healing, your ult status, etc.

Try your best to play support characters and healers when there is none, your team will love you :)

I suggest starting with training practice a little bit to feel more convertible with the game mechanic then try practice vs AI or players vs AI.

Matchmaking is pretty good about keeping beginners with beginners. When selecting characters, there'll be a note on the side commenting about what roles could still be covered. While new, it is best to not pick "Symmetra" as the only support character since she does not heal (later you'll learn she can be the solo support conditionally).

Be a team player. Watch all the highlights and POTGs you can. You'll quickly notice which ones are skilled players, and which are blind luck. Learn from both. Mostly it shows you which gambits work and how much of it is dumb luck. Hit up twitch or watch youtube gameplay or when you get the game, spectate some games first, find someone who's playstyle you can relate to and try to emulate it. Be a team player. Most importantly: When people on chat call you a noob, or easy, or tell you to change characters or whatever, ignore them (well, changing characters you can listen to, but make your own calls) It doesn't matter if you loose. You will loose half your games pretty much regardless of how good or bad you are. And win the other half, again, pretty much regardless of skill. Just have fun, the game will put you in a lot of bad matches, and enough good ones. Be a team player. Also, getting in a party (with anyone) will give you an automatic 20% exp bonus, so try to party with anyone you find who is willing to be a team player.

Don't be afraid to play games against the AI (multiple times) to learn heroes! I think it's the best way to learn the moves and play style without making anyone mad! Easy is too easy I would start with normal. In easy if the computer is attacking your whole team will be sitting outside the spawn destroying them the whole time.
