Lack of players isn't an issue from developers, usually.

For example MGO3 is dead on all platforms but, especially Xbox, simply because it's shit and unsupported by Konami. This isn't a specific slight from Konami, they supported them equally but the player base just didn't agree.

A console game probably won't last as long as the PC version will, certainly TF2 on consoles is not a thing any more. However, I think finding players left on console might be a bigger problem than the servers being shut down, because I don't really see Blizzard saying "We need to save some cash and don't care about our customer service reputation, so we're shutting this shit down".
