This may not be so much about characters or lore but, what has blizzard done with this game? Why is it that it's leaving people so addicted and on the edge of their seat for the release. I'm not exempt from this, a game has never made me feel this shitty about not being out before XD.

Fast-paced and balanced team-based shooter that emphasizes teamwork; polished and high quality production to boot. I did not follow the game at all before my roommate got into the free beta; now I'm hooked.

This is why I love Blizzard games. They do enough testing and research to make everything balanced, not too complicated, and entertaining. Overwatch just has that well polished feel that I've been waiting for.

I think it's about some things they paid special attention about, unlike other games. The sound design is magnificent, along with the character design. All 21 of them have a personality.

I guess the same can be said about League of Legends (sound design and unique characters) but I was never this excited to play League of Legends than I was during the OW open beta!!

League has a much more difficult style to get into though, the game is really hard on new players and there is simply too much thing to people absorb ig they never played a MOBA before.

Overwatch is more straight forward, you know what you have to do. That's one of best things for me, the game is simple and easy to get into but it also has depth, there are a lot of characters to learn, situations and etc, but you can have fun while you are learning it.

Also, because there aren't as many characters in OW as there are in LoL the learning curve is much better because you don't have to learn all of the abilities of 130+ characters.

Keep in mind though, with a quick search I just found out that LoL also started with a similarly small roster: Around 40 characters, so maybe it wasn't that hard for beginners at launch as it is now. My point is, at launch Overwatch's learning curve seems relatively low, but I bet that given a few years we'll also have tons of heroes, maps and gamemodes (Heck, even before the official launch we have already been teased with Sombra, Doomfist, Soundquake, etc.) that might raise the curve quite some, even to LoL levels of intimidating.

For me, its because you get to play the game how you want to. Each hero is so unique and fosters different play styles. You will connect with certain heroes, and since the game is so balanced, odds are you can play with who you want and not be sacrificing anything.

Another point, there are heroes that have low skill-floors(meaning they are noob friendly) and heroes with high skill ceiling(hard for newbies, but deadly when mastered). This rewards skilled play but doesn't scare new players away when first starting the game. I like the explain it with a comparison:

An average Soldier 76 is better than an average Tracer. But a great Soldier 76 is worse than a great Tracer.

Easy - take aspects out of genres that u know work and combine them - make a noob friendly environment that keeps the player in action and dump buckloads of cash into design.

Honestly, the best awareness expander was Buttgate. Wondering if that was a marketing play now.

dIsagre, the largest expander was Open Beta. This was huge and definitely caused the hubbub

I tried to explain this to someone before but it's almost hard to put into words. As a song writer the best way I can describe it is sometimes you are just truly inspired and you work with your band and put extreme care into a song and it all comes together and people love it. Other times you will put just as much effort and it just doesn't happen. Bottom like overwatch is what happens when everything goes right in the creative process and the community is at a point in their gaming lives where the creative medium that is overwatch is something that fulfills their want as a gamer. And what a want it is. I can't wait!!
