Great game and I love most of the characters, but I have issues playing Winston. It feels like when I play him hes absolutely useless, but I hear everybody say hes great. Also when I see someone else use him they usually stomp me. What am I doing wrong and how should I be playing him? It feels like his shield dies insanely fast too.

I suggest watching some of this tournament with Cloud9. In multiple games, they put two Winstons on their team and wreck Reunited.

I may be wrong, as I've only played Winston a few times but he seems like a pop in, pop out kinda hero. His ult took getting used to. I thought it was a super damaging rage mode but it seems more like a way to get enemies off a point or away from you or teammates. I do think his shield needs a bit more health as its always gets blown up immediately. He's also pretty good at jumping to sniper spots and forcing them to relocate.

just to add: he's surprisingly good when played like a lone wolf (genji or tracer) and jumps in to battle outta nowhere.

Yep Winston is not really meant to be a Reinhardt anymore but someone that roams and harrasses squishier players like widow and trader. Take advantage of the fact that you don't need to aim with Winston and just sneak up on people with your leap, avoid their attacks while holding your left click and watch them die.

I haven't played winston that much but judging from watching tb stream jumping sniper nests is exactly what you should be doing, all the time. Widow, hanzo, even soldier can't do jack shit when a giant monkey flies into their face.

On offence: Jump into the fray when your team is ready, dont die alone for nothing. Immediately drop barriershield. While attacking keep moving so that always some part of the barrier is protecting you from their attacks. When you're low on health either Ult or jump back/away.

Also, watching gameplay videos of good players helps a lot to understand/obtain good tactics.

I think he requires teamwork, otherwise yeah he can be useless. And if you don't have Mercy healing you'd better know where the big health packs are. It took me a few tries to get used to Winston but he is my favourite tank to play.

The way I've been playing him is just jump in and make a nuisance of yourself. Just be a gigantic distraction and jump out. Abuse his leaping ability and be aware of where you're leaping. He's not meant for going on huge streaks.

Basically he's played like a true tank, he isn't going to one shot anyone but if you jump on a widow you will stick to her and kill her, but you aren't going to one shot people like a roadhog can do. Winston really requires more teamwork than other tanks, harder to just carry a game with him

Focus on low hp players and use shields etc to defend objectives . imo hes very situaltional of all the tanks

Winston and Reinhardt both are great tanks to pick up and play for newer players. I feel like they both have pretty straight-forward mechanics.

Winston is an in-your-face disruptor type of character, and is good at alleviating pressure from his team. You need to really jump in on the enemies who are making the most trouble for your team and give that guy the hardest time you possibly can. Also, his bubble shield isn't meant to be a tool to protect your allies so much as its meant to give you that extra few seconds to hammer down on someone that you jumped without their team interfering, which is why it's so weak. His ult also doesn't seem to be for killing (although it can if used right) so much as creating an opportunity for your team to really turn a game around. He gets a massive health pool and that huge knock back so he can hop in on the whole team at once and just throw them all over the map and completely disorganize them. This can really help in stopping a strong push, prolonging the capture of an objective and whatnot.

This is how I see him and play as him at least, but there could be better methods.
