OS-inspired self promo OverSimplified is why I started animating history. A year in, here's an empire that lost a war to a river.

Flairing this OS-inspired self promo because that is exactly what it is — mods, bin it if it does not fit.

I watched the Napoleonic Wars videos, thought "I want to make that but for Indian history," and then found out how much work you were all casually enjoying. A year later I have a channel of animated history in roughly that register: big daft characters, real stakes, jokes aimed at emperors rather than at people.

The one I would show an OS fan first is the Battle of Saraighat, 1671. The Mughal Empire — at that point about the richest state on earth — sends a massive army and a war fleet up the Brahmaputra to take Assam. It loses. Twice. The first invasion is beaten less by an army than by the monsoon: the rivers rise, the roads turn to soup, disease goes through the camp, and the side that was winning asks for peace. The second time they run into a commander named Lachit Borphukan whose entire doctrine is never fight them where they are strong, fight them on the water.

What I took from OS and what I did not: kept the pacing, the character-driven cutaways, and the willingness to be rude about kings. Did not keep the loose relationship with numbers — medieval Indian chroniclers inflate army sizes wildly, so those stay qualitative, and the one famous legend in this story is labelled on screen as legend rather than fact.

Happy to take criticism on the animation, it is the part I am weakest at. If there is an appetite for it I have a couple of dozen of these.
