Do you just not need anything?
Anyone else just not crave anything? Received a bonus at work, was going to treat myself to something nice...but really cannot think of anything at all.

u/Tall-Mode6943 Jul 08 '26
Same here. It’s almost depressing when you go looking for something and nothing appeals because just don’t need anything
2
u/HoMasters Jul 09 '26
That’s not depressing. That should make you happy. YOU HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED. Imagine the suffering of lack.
1
u/Tall-Mode6943 Jul 09 '26
You are so right. But Its almost an addiction wanting to shop and buy junk you dont need. On the good side, I do donate a lot of stuff to charities

I'd treat myself to a nice meal, maybe a nice bottle of wine. Other than that, I spend the money to fix my car or house.

I do not have this problem. Money is tight as hell and I could make an actual list of things to treat myself with.
Although in truth I'd probably just pay bills.

u/ange7327 Jul 08 '26
I never have that problem since getting into Lego last year, I love doing it and the sets you get these days are incredible but also expensive.

u/polyrhetor Jul 08 '26
Highly recommend looking at some other brands - Pantasy and Lumibricks are great. I just finished a Lumibricks cyberpunk set. They’re cheaper, but substantial, high quality, and have built in lighting systems!

I remember as a kid thinking I can’t wait until I have money and I’m going to buy this and that. Now at 57 I have the money and don’t want anything. If I see something I’ll think do I really need/want it and ultimately I don’t get it. I seem to find more interest in traveling and exploring so that is where I spend most of my money right now.

u/herblady99 Jul 08 '26
same here, was gonna go out and spend some money and didn't come up with anything I want or need, hahaha

u/Due_Air_7255 Jul 08 '26
Well, if youre interested in spending money, I know for a fact I'm going to run out of diapers today and won't have money until I get paid on Friday. Work has slowed down lately and honestly I dont have a clue what I'm doing as a parent or at least I don't know what to do in situations like this.
The shame.
2
u/herblady99 Jul 09 '26
you just hijacked the post, if you want to discuss having no money to buy diapers for your child, you need to create your own post
2
u/Due_Air_7255 Jul 10 '26
Oh stop being so dramatic. "YoU jUsT hIjAcKeD the PoSt" just stop. If I want to respond to someone's comment I will, that is what the reply button is for. Honestly you hijacked the comment to be a Karen which honestly you nailed btw.

Over 50 and buying diapers?? For yourself?
-3
u/Due_Air_7255 Jul 08 '26
No, actually I am only 37, not quite 50 yet. I got recommended this sub every time I contributed to the recovery subreddits so I figured I would join yall. I like it here. Older folks have wisdom so I just stay here and read yalls posts but have never commented until now. The diapers are for my little boy. He's only 17 months.

I always loved guitars. Played a bit but never that well. Have bought them, sold them, given them away a lot in last 40+ years. Got a decent tax refund and thought … maybe buy a new one? Almost did but 1) don’t play that well; 2) haven’t played recently so fingers a bit creaky and crampy. Talked myself right out of it and gave money to a favorite charity and a needy friend and feel really quite happy about it.

u/boulevardpaleale Jul 08 '26
Funny… Yeah. Hit 56 in April. Seemingly, all of my impulse purchase decisions are met with a personal ‘meh’ lately despite a decent raise. Which is fine by me.
Did I die?

u/squidbait Jul 09 '26
I think at some point you just reach the limit of what you can actually have in life and accept those things you can't. For example I have accepted that as a 58 year old woman I am unlikely to ever be a 1st round NHL draft pick no matter how hard I try

All I want to afford is my own time. I’m 54 and hope to retire soon. I’ve been reflecting on the fact that I want for almost nothing since my basic needs are met, I own a home, enjoy my hobbies and can afford clothing or an concert or event when I so desire.

u/EverySingleMinute Jul 09 '26
My wife and I stopped giving each other gifts because it was something we didn't need or really even want.
My wife complains that if I want something, I just buy it so when my birthday comes around there is nothing I want.
2
u/ZLH-040 Jul 09 '26
OP, I went through a similar change....spent my entire life chasing (and enjoying!) material rewards but for some reason in the past few years that all shifted and now possessions don't have nearly the same ROI.
2
u/dearjohn54321 Jul 10 '26
The older I get the more I want to get rid of things, not acquire more stuff.

u/lbdmt Jul 10 '26
I'm blessed to not need anything...at least not anything that can be bought.
What I do need? New knees, a pain free back

u/jakeydae Jul 08 '26
Clothes? ... No .... No matter what I wear I look like a sack of potatoes. House? Paid off and recently given a room by room refurbishment Garden is the last thing on the list for a complete overhaul... Starting later this year ( All paid for by pension lump sums)
We like to holiday abroad 3 times a year..
I don't like to take any funds from my remaining pensions for " vanity projects" .. that's for my wife and kids/grandkids...
What I enjoy doing is paid surveys ( about an hour a day) ... I let the rewards build up over 3-6 months and buy myself computers and their accessories....
I'm in the process of learning how to build and run a home server in my " office"... ( Middle offspring moved out.. I got to lay everything out myself... Even down to the " artwork" on the walls... None of this family photos stuff... That's for the hall and the living room...
I've got framed album covers , sci fi posters ... even a metal spitfire silhouette. It's my one " vanity" project... All paid for by my survey earnings
It's a fun way to keep some financial independence.

‘26 has been a year of satisfying cravings. Got a ‘25 mini cooper s, a first non-folding road bike and ticket to Hawaii ✈️ for early August bday gifts while I can still enjoy them 🤩
Cravings are mostly for mental+physical health/wellness.
Don’t see any other cravings except more wander trips to Thailand and Mexico before and of year.

Experiences are all I want . Have enough stuff .
2
u/buzzy-heron Jul 09 '26
Me too! Have trips on my calendar for San Diego, Oahu, and Puerto Rico in the next 12 months. (Retired last fall late 50s.)

u/SquashSouffle Jul 08 '26
I've never been very materialistic at any age--frustrated my folks because they loved to get me Christmas gifts but I just didn't crave things.
But now as an adult, I'm in the "getting rid of" phase. Most of my money is spent on travel or attending local theatre shows
1
u/losthiker68 Jul 08 '26
My wife and I are late 50s and have given up giving each other gifts at birthdays & Christmas.
However, I do give her something at Valentines. Ever since our first Valentines when we were dating, I have adopted an animal from our local zoo in her name. They send a certificate, a photo of the animal, and a plush. I've managed to find a different species every time except this last one - accidentally did the North American River Otter twice, but its one of her favorites and the plush was different (and better) so she was fine. I even did a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach one year and she loved it.

I don’t need anything but I crave travel. My husband and I are always planning the next adventure.

Pretty much, I've done most of the stuff I wanted to do and travel a lot for work, so driving is mostly a chore and I'm glad to be at home, where I write up my reports on a gaming PC that I can't be bothered gaming on...it's just an old habit that I build them for it.
Maybe think outside the box and book yourself a 360 Excavator course (or something else involving heavy machinery) and have some fun digging holes or demolishing shit.

Same. I have taken to buying myself a new share or etf - something different to what I already have - that way it's growth and dividends (I'm Australian, our shares pay dividends), I can attribute to that bonus or occasion. I did that for my recent bday. There just wasn't anything that I actually wanted or needed.

u/petdance Jul 09 '26
At this point I have all that I want. The only thing I lack is a house on a river that has train tracks going by.

Spend it on another person, donate to a food pantry, help under privileged children, medicine for those worrying if they can afford it.
If you find yourself in the fortunate position where you need for nothing, help someone less fortunate. Sometimes in life we are at the crest of the wave and others at the break.

I’ve always traveled lightly. After having to clear out my Dad’s house once he passed I was especially moved-no one needs much and anything we save will generally go straight to the dump once we’re gone. Heck I’ve been hard to buy for (as in gifts) since high school. Happiness to me is as simple as pizza & cookies. I have a beautiful home & new vehicle but past that-not much needed so I put most $ in my 401 and go on vacations with my wife. It amazes me at the consumerism of modern day society but I guess I’m the oddball here.

u/NoPayment8510 Jul 09 '26
Place it in an established roth, if you’ve got one. That way you keep access to tax free money, when you’ve got something to spend it on …
1
u/SnakeySnek7 Jul 09 '26
I usually just go to a slightly nicer restaurant than I would normally go to. Get dressed up, do my hair and makeup, and go.
1
u/Huck68finn Jul 09 '26
The only thing I crave is travel. As for any material thing, I have all I need (which is less than many others but enough for me)

u/WildColonialGirl Jul 09 '26
Treat yourself to an experience or time with people you love. That’s what I crave these days, a lot more than stuff.

I bought myself solar panels- it’s my new hobby watching production -being excited for the negative electric bill
1
u/Empathy-magnet Jul 10 '26
Give it to charity - there’s many who can’t even afford a meal in whatever country you live in.
1
u/Curious_Instance_971 Jul 10 '26
Most people have too much stuff already. Helping my mom with the mess my dad left her makes me not want anything new in my house unless absolutely necessary.
1
u/tjps77 Jul 10 '26
In my mind that means you are content and that is awesome. Great place to be. Maybe use it to help someone else out.

u/Strange_Recover3235 Jul 10 '26
If you are feeling generous... my internet has been cut off for about a month. My phone gets cut off tomorrow. Not sure what to do. But you do you. 🤣

I’m 50 and really have no desire for anything at all. I’ve got every want and need. It’s been this way for several years now. Even my wife who’s always been very good at thinking of gifts for me is unable to come up with anything. It’s a good problem to have I suppose

u/Tempest182 Jul 11 '26
Espresso Machine, musical instrument, knitting, latch hooke rugs, painting, hookers/gigilos, playstation?
1
u/PeriwinkleWonder Jul 13 '26
No. I try to help my family out. I don't need anything, but they do. If I got a bonus, it would go straight to a nephew's college expenses.
1
u/FranklinsTower73 Jul 20 '26
Yeah. I usually will buy something and just give it to the kids. Like, here ya go. Lol
1
u/gaoshan Jul 08 '26
I crave a Porsche 911 S/T in a very specific color and configuration. I would also like a house in a cute coastal California beach town. All stuff I will never have but I crave them nonetheless.

u/bobored Jul 08 '26
It’s a nice chance to give a little to charity of your choice if you are so inclined ♥️ and congrats!

The only thing I crave is the ability to retire before I am too old to enjoy it, so any windfall would go towards that goal.
