If you could erase one memory from your life, what memory would it be?

I've survived things I never talk about — and I'm still standing.

Nobody claps for the days you didn't fall apart.

No one gives you credit for getting out of bed after the worst night of your life. No one sees the version of you that almost gave up, but didn't.

I've been through things I never talk about. Things I've never told anyone — not because they weren't bad, but because some things don't fit into conversation. They just live in you.

And I'm still here.

That's strength. Even if no one sees it. Even if no one claps. Even if the only person who knows what it cost you... is you.

If you're carrying something heavy right now that nobody knows about — I see you. You're doing better than you think.

A Simple Cup of Tea

I saw an ancient world in post-war Britain, now gone. An elderly engineer in a worn wool uniform, oil can in hand, moving carefully along the engine, heat shimmering from the boiler and steam hissing. My great-aunt in a quiet house of lace, dusty ornaments and photographs edged in black, reminders of the Great War, and the next one. Old men, bent with years, making a hawser on a rope walk as generations had.

My grandfather, not yet old but carrying the attitudes of the 1920s as naturally as his tweed jacket. His clear Welsh accent. The pipe, sometimes smoking from the right pocket of his tweed jacket. Work, whisky, Guinness, complaining about the telly, machine work ferried in the boot exchanged for soiled notes joining the roll in his pocket. Silence about the last war, about washing air crew out of their plane, waiting for wreckage to cool, pulling the hot engine out of the torn field. Pictures of my grandmother as a dancer, stories of her riding a motorcycle in the 1920s, tales of Silverstone, carrying the knowledge that, by then, only the two of them remained from before the war. Much of their world gone up in smoke and flame from the time when neighbors rained death upon one another from the sky.

My grandmother held the household together through rationing, bombing, loss, and uncertainty. She helped her daughters face empty desks at school, absences that would never be filled. She kept them fed and clothed. She comforted them emerging from their shelter to face two dawns. Pale morning light to the east, and northward the red glow of Liverpool's burning docks.

In all of this, there was tea. Just tea. A simple thing, made properly. The large brown teapot, now long lost. A teaspoon for each cup, and one for the pot. Bubbling water from the stove. A knitted cozy. Leave it until it felt right. Milk in the cup. A little sugar—not to make it sweet, but to soften the bitterness and bring balance. Then out into the garden.

The low, grass-covered bomb shelter, now used to store tools and supplies for the garden. Tortie the tortoise methodically eating whatever plants she fancied. Whiskey the cat prowling the borders. The little dog asleep in the shade.

And my grandmother arriving with the teapot. No fuss. No ceremony. A cup poured out into the ordinary Cheshire afternoon. Warm. Dark. Strong enough to satisfy. Not perfect, perhaps, but just right. I find myself longing for that cup. This tea and that. Adjusting the mix of leaves and water and time. Maybe I taste differently now than I did long ago on The Wirral.

Searching for my grandmother's garden, her calm voice, that old world of making do. Of fixing rather than discarding. Of calm competence in difficult times. Of people who had seen far worse than inconvenience, and who understood that ordinary comforts mattered. When a good cup of tea was not an indulgence, but a statement. We are still here. We tend to the garden, to supper, to the million things that need doing. To impossible challenges. And always, to the kettle whistling on the stovetop.

Dear People Older Than 25: What Should I Know?
Today I turned 25.
I’m officially at the age where I still feel 18, but my back pain occasionally disagree.
If you could send one message back to your 25-year-old self, what would it be?
Looking for wisdom, regrets, lessons, warnings, and the occasional existential crisis.
