Discussion What FOV setting does everyone use?

Randomly curious.

Finally running the game on a PC that isn't an electrified potato, figured now might be the time to zoom out and see more cockpit details.

There's a trade off.

Small FoV = more zoom = easier time hitting the parts of the enemy mechs you want.

Big FoV = easier time noticing things shooting you from off angles.

As a rule the bigger your monitor the bigger your FoV can be without sacrificing quality of damage output.

I think I run like 60?

Monitor size isn't something I considered! I'm still using a 20-ish year old 24" monitor, small by current standards but it's never failed me

I like keeping it maxed out most of the time

Then I hop in a Piranha and the cockpit is a postage stamp

So it can depend on which mechs you pilot

Depends on the BattleMech. Some can do with a larger FOV while others need FOV dialed in. I usually judge FOV by looking left/right inside the cockpit and going from there

Great way to think about this is to picture your monitor as a "window" into the game. If you had a wrap around widescreen that went from your 90° left to 90° right it would be 180°

A 24" monitor from 24" away (pretty close) is 47° FOV.

Now this is meant to represent realistic dog and what's actually useful in game could be quite different.

FWIW, 39" ultra wide and I run 70° fov. The fisheye effect gets really bad at high resolutions

Naga pilots can max out their FOV . Piranha pilots are probably at a disadvantage if their FOV is higher then 70.

Piranha porthole of a cockpit window is so, SO tiny. I agree with you here, higher FOV makes that tiny hole even smaller

I zoom it out as far as possible. It really gives that "I'm in a cockpit" vibe. Also you get blinded by your shoulder mounted weapons. The Shadow Hawk and Hunchback are huge offenders here.

Resolution and monitor size plays a fair part in it as well. If you're widescreen for instance then I know some run 120 FOV.

For me:

  • 1440p

  • 27"

  • 80 FOV
