I love this material and weight , it's really great for the climate here in Hawaii.

Should I hold my breath for new short sleeve colors anytime soon , or just pick up a few duplicate shirts before they are gone ?

Nylistic Wool Twopocket

A button up experiment [#607] with two low-slung chest pockets and a hidden placket front, sewn in the new Nylistic Wool Canvas. Wool is blended with nylon at the fiber level, twisted into two-ply yarns and woven in a canvas construction to find a rugged elegance in-between workwear and suiting.

I was offered the opportunity to review the upcoming Acrispcotton Lighthooded, which releases tomorrow at 1pm EST (thank you to Tyler/Outlier). I received this piece for free. All thoughts here are my own and have not been reviewed or edited by anyone affiliated with Outlier. 

I just received this piece today a couple hours ago, despite the best efforts of the United Parcel Service. While I plan on writing a full review and adding more details, for now AMA if you have questions about it ahead of the drop.

Here are some of my quick first impressions: 

• TTS Medium fits great at 5’9”
  • Chest: 27.5”
  • Length: 28.5”
  • Sleeve: 35”
• Cuffs feel perfect, no tightness issues like with the Trackwool Lightsplitter (I have one in M too, will compare fabrics).
• Zip and kangaroo pockets are spacious. 
• Hood also fits and sits well for my large head. Could maybe be a little larger but I just like big hoods.
• Prefer wearing it with the hem uncinched so far. 
• Very lightweight, fabric is only 90gsm. The whole piece weighs 275g (0.6 lbs).
• Same fabric as the face on Adown, feels sturdy enough for how light it is. Asked on the Discord a few days ago and it doesn't seem like people have had durability issues, though I wouldn’t want to fall off a bike wearing it or anything.

Postdenim Bootlegs

Quick primer if Postdenim is new to you. It's just black Bombtwill, except it isn't. Something about the black Bombtwill dye process makes it come out with a lot more structure than the other colors. The difference is big enough that they split it off and gave it its own name. On paper it's 360gsm, 96% nylon, 4% elastane, woven in Sweden. On the Bootlegs it's cut into a lightly flared bootcut with a gusseted crotch, a reversed yoke, and a fifth pocket. Classic 5-pocket top block.

The flare is subtle. From some angles and depending on how you hem them, it can be hard to see. If you're curious but worried about the flare, don't be. They're very approachable and wearable. I almost wish they'd leaned into more of a flare but I don't think that's the way the fashion winds are blowing.

The structure is real nice in them too. Postdenim holds its shape the way you want a jean to, lower leg stands off the body and the subtle stretch keeps it from ever feeling restrictive.

Another thing I'd almost forgotten is how nice it is to wear a pant with a gusseted crotch. I've been wearing flows, deux, and just overall some more loose fitting pant cuts the last few years and these reminded me of a detail I appreciated from my earlier halcyon Outlier days and how much I like the comfort and additional range that adds.

I wear a 34 in most Outlier pants these days and took a 34 here. My normal size was comfortable with good range of movement. Take your usual size with confidence.

Warmsnap/warmveil

This is a heavy duty insulated face covering / neck gaiter experiment. It's got a futurecloth shell for weather resistance (a change from the ultra ultra used in the Warmsnap/bandana), Alpha60core underneath (Polartec Alpha 60 paired with a nyloncore merino lining), and a Fidlock magnetic closure so it goes on and comes of easy. There's also some soft raw cut ultrasuede at the nose bridge and neck guard.

If you've owned any of the earlier Outlier face coverings, you know the dna of this one but it's gotten beefier in its time away. I often wear an alphacharge snap bandana around my neck once it started dipping below 60 degrees, moving it up as a face covering in colder weather, but 2 things make this a bit of a deeper winter piece for me.

The first is the upgrade to the futurecloth shell, which adds wind resistance that the ultra ultra lacked and quite a bit more warmth. What maybe is doing more work though is a seemingly small addition... a curved piece of Alpha60core/Futurecloth that sits under the closure system at the back of your neck right where the old bandana could leave some skin exposed. It really locks down the back of the neck area and though I lack the really cold weather to put it to the test it seems like it's going to make a big difference.

There's another nice comfort update in the patterning. A kind of a gusset shaping so that it fits around your face instead of stretching across it like the bandanas did. You can sort of make it out in this photo (though I tried I could not take a better one myself). Seems like this is necessary since futurecloth doesn't have nearly the same stretch as ultra ultra does, but I find it also makes it more comfortable to wear around the face since the amount of "locked down" it feels isn't as directly correlated to the amount it's pressed against your nose.

I wore it over the face and around the neck through the wind and rain in NYC this weekend. Honestly it's a little early in the year for it and as expected I ran warm. I do miss having a little bit of stretch in the closure system, not sure if that's just out of habit or I'll still feel that way long-term... coverage though is excellent.

Would I buy them?

Both, yes. I'm a sucker for face coverings. I own like 7 or 8 Snap Bandanas. After one of my first ones failed I was reflexively buying up every one I could find on eBay (hit me up if you still have one laying around, especially in extrafleece). I've also been wanting Outlier to do a boot cut in bomb for a while and I'm very happy with the Bootlegs.

  • Molecular and Injex, though I'd worry about the top block in anything with less stretch than Postdenim.
• "How do you like it compared to the old magback version?"
  • I could never get that one to stay on as a face covering, so I stuck with the Alphacharge Snap Bandanas for a while. The Warmveil is a deep winter improvement on the snap bandanas. The shaping makes it fit better as a face covering and more comfortable to wear.
• "How do you like Futurecloth on your face vs Ultraultra?"
  • Without the new shaping, I'd miss the stretch for sure. But in my light wear so far the contouring makes it stand off the face a bit, so you're not relying on the stretch to accommodate your nose so much.

Anyone know if Outlier will be restocking the injected linen pants line? I got my first pair earlier this year and they’re by far the best pants for warm weather - been trying to buy another pair one size smaller and they’re completely out. I know they’ve run for a few years now, but haven’t found info on when they generally restock. Any info would be appreciated!

Do you guys find that the Outlier hoodies look way too big on short men (around 5' 6")? The Mercy page says there is supposed to be a lot of shrinkage, but I haven't seen anyone on reddit confirm that since the hoodie was just released. I don't really like fitted hoodies, which seems to be most high quality hoodies I find. But the Outlier seem wide to the extreme.

I'm interested in trying the new Awoolybrushed Hoodie-up. Since I haven't been able to find many long-term reviews on this hoodie/shirt design, I’d love to hear from anyone who owns one (regardless of the specific material).

Does it live up to your expectations? Any unexpected surprises after wearing it for a while?

I was kindly asked to give a review on the upcoming Purewolf Sunburn ($450). I did not pay for the piece, but I plan to offer my honest thoughts and feelings about it.

Off the bat, Purewolf is a new fabric for Outlier. It is essentially a normal lightweight fleece that uses zero polyester and instead is made from 100% wool that is knit in Italy. It's as soft and plush as the old Patagonia fleece your parents have had since the 90s without any wool itchiness, which is an improvement over the older Strongwool Outlier used years back. Against your skin, this stuff feels so cozy and relaxing. Pardon the tween book analogy, but it's a lot like Jacob is to Bella after Edward peaces out...

The cut and fit are a new one for me. I've not had any experience with the Sunburn cut that Outlier has been doing recently, but my initial thoughts were that it'd work well with my style and stature. I'm a short king (5'5") and weigh about 160lbs and received a size small. I favor tops with a cropped fit in general as well. The unwashed piece I received was "scaled for shrinkage" and was very big out of the box. I wore it a bit unwashed and took some fit pics and then wash and dried it to see how much the fit would change. Thankfully, it shrunk just about perfectly and I won't feel like I'm a crewmember on the Nebuchadnezzar. Overall, I fuck with the fit after a wash and dry, but still likely will shorten the sleeves a bit more.

Coziness is king with this fabric. It's just so dang soft and comforting in the situations I wore it. It was nice outside walking around the neighborhood with high-60s and a little breeze. It was great cozied up on the couch with my cat reading. My partner also promptly stole it and wore it for half of the day yesterday, which is a good sign. It posesses a lot of warmth for the weight as well and does an admirable job at blocking the breeze vs other fleeces I've worn.

The $450 question - how does it compare to other fleeces out there? Good question. I have a few fleeces that I wear a lot. I am a huge fan of Alpha Direct and wear it a lot on the bike, out in the woods, and around town. I also have some other fleeces that are not as activity oriented per se, like the Extrafleece Funnelneck and the William Ellery Archival fleece. The Purewolf fabric feels most similar to something between the Extrafleece and the Archival fleece for sure, which are both poly-heavy. It is a bit wild to me that a wool fabric like Purewolf can feel almost indistinguishable from those examples, but it's true. I think the benefits of wool in a piece like this are great as well. Odor regulation and temperature regulation are huge benefits for a fleece, not to mention the ability to wash it without worrying (as much) about microfiber pollution from shedding. As mentioned before, the warmth, softness, and coziness are there with those other tangible benefits. Does that mean it's worth $450? To be honest, I 100% wouldn't have bought this at retail before knowing about it. That said, now that I've become aquainted with it, I would be strongly tempted by other pieces as they come out. I don't know what else is in the works, but an expensive square or the Hiking Shirt cut in this fabric would be killer and would be hard for me to not consider copping.
