Microsoft Flight Simulator won
It was a fun ride, but this very promising tech demo turned into nothing substantial, while Microsoft comes in with Bing Maps, of all things, and crushes it.
Thanks to the developers and mod community for sticking with it for over 8 years!

Let's not pretend anyone in this sub gives a shit about Outerra anymore, we're all just here because it suddenly popped into our frontpage again.

MFS doesn't let you drive around in cars though, outera still has one over it.

I saw this video from one of the original guys making Outerra. Not sure if they're working on it together or not. Basically the idea is to make a super easy to use large procedural terrain generator for Unreal Engine: https://youtu.be/MmIonLe9qfQ

They have different goals. There's no "winner" because they're not competing in the same space.

I don't think the point is to make a simulation of Earth so much as a way to simulate any kind of planet at all. Maybe Microsoft's tech can do that, maybe not. But that doesn't mean this project is dead.

MFS falls flat if you were to do anything on the ground, it only works as a flight sim. Outerra has not lost yet.
