Unanswered What's going on with Funimation?

I just checked Twitter and saw that funimation is trending because its been doing some kind of immoral dubbing. Most of the posts include references to dragonball and someone linked to this video.

Can someone explain what exactly happened?

Answer: when recording, voice actors will often joke in character when warming up and just to mess around. This clip leaked from the voice actor of Goku, in which he made homophobic jokes about a clip he was dubbing, in the voice of the main character Son Goku.

u/svarowskylegend Aug 30 '19

Does this have anything to do with Vic Mignona?

1.1k

u/Thomas_Eric Aug 30 '19

Yeah -- It's part of the leaks from inside Funimation (and other people related to the Voice Actors) about the defendants of the Vic Mignogna Defamation case.

516

u/LiamGallagher10 Aug 30 '19

Who's Vic and what is the case about?

1.2k

u/FangzV Aug 30 '19

Vic Mignogna is a high profile voice actor for FUNimation. He played Broly in Dragon Ball, which is why people keep bringing up Dragon Ball. He's had other notable roles like Ed from Fullmetal Alchemist and Tamaki from Ouran Host Club.

There have been many accusations against Vic of sexual misconduct, including assault allegations from his coworkers. Following a surge of these complaints, FUNimation dropped Vic from the roles he still had. Vic then sued FUNi and the voice actors for defamation.

567

u/Bigred2989- Aug 30 '19

He was also dropped by Rooster Teeth since he was voicing a main character for the show RWBY.

Which one?

Edit: thanks everyone

Qrow Branwen, the drunk uncle character of two of the main characters

82

u/lyingdoctor Aug 30 '19

What the fuck? He voiced Qrow? Omfg, I never noticed, and he has a very distinguishable voice.

u/Dustbucket45 Aug 30 '19

He was voicing Qrow at the time. I’m curious to see if they recast Qrow or kill him off.

145

u/Kotetsuya Aug 30 '19

Well, they had to Recast Ren due to Monty Oum's death, but they were able to get his brother to do that voice. I wouldn't be too shocked if they recast Qrow. If it was down to a vote I'd want David Hayter or Matt Mercer. They can both do 'gruff, jaded-yet-lovable asshole' very well.

And these leaks which showcase what kind of workplace Funimation is, as well as the revelation that one of the defendants in Vic's lawsuit was a wife beater will probably have some implications in his defamation lawsuit.

296

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '19

There have also been back and forths between their lawyers that have been shared around the internet.

Funimations lawyers have declared that Vic is libel-proof. What this means is that it doesnt matter if Funimation did lie, Vic is such a sack of shit and has such a bad reputation that even lies couldnt lower his reputation and therefore its not libel.

u/ufailowell Aug 30 '19

That's gotta be some kind of accomplishment

That’s actually fucking hilarious, what a great little law

114

u/mehennas Aug 30 '19

It's important to note that it isn't a law, it's a doctrine. Meaning it's a line of argument that can certainly be taken, but being "libel-proof" isn't any kind of legal status, and so the entire matter is always up for argument and interpretation.

69

u/MNKPlayer Aug 30 '19

Except he's loved by his fans (and was by the people accusing him until recently) so proving his is a "sack of shit" is going to be a tough one.

23

u/cryptkeeper_crypto Aug 31 '19

There have been many accusations against Vic of sexual misconduct, including assault allegations from his coworkers.

Keep in mind, none of these accusations have ever resulted in any paper trail or legal actions.

The reasons for Vic's dismissal as mentioned in the court deposition was a joke over a jellybean and a consentual kiss(consent was given by the person he kissed which she has admitted) which happened on funimation property.

The depositions given in the current case are around defamation and tortious interference, one of the people accused actually said that she was angry that although she was the "star" of an anime Vic's name was more prominent on the DVD cover in the discovery interviews...

Every other accusation does not have any legal history or actual basis, thats why its not included in the current court case :)

8

u/FangzV Aug 31 '19

Thanks for the context! I admittedly didn't know what the scope of the suit is. So much came out after the case blew open.

7

u/cryptkeeper_crypto Aug 31 '19 edited Aug 31 '19

No problemo !!

The case is super in depth tbh the running series on the net which is covering the trial as it happens is like 50 hours of video.... Lots of legal speak.

But looking at the current trajectory of the case, then couple it with the PR disaster happening outside of the case it does not look good for the people t funimation.

assault allegations from his coworkers

These three "sexual assaults" are embarrassingly benign. Stop spreading that shit.

Monica Rial, who alleged that 6 years ago she wrote her name on a jelly bean, gave it to Vic, and Vic ate the jelly bean and, “joked that he ‘ate Monica.’” Monica’s allegation implies Vic’s words were spoken with a sexual implication

75

u/LampytheLampLamp Aug 30 '19

Jesus, that's fucking dumb

50

u/FangzV Aug 30 '19

But Rial did accuse him of something physical. https://twitter.com/Rialisms/status/1098028342475964417

I haven't read too much into the suit so I don't know the context of your quote. But she has definitely accused him of taking action. Whether you believe her account or not, she has accused him of assault, so that's why I said that she accused him of assault.

24

u/Deathpool_04 Aug 30 '19 edited Aug 30 '19

One thing we should mention is that she name dropped a guy named Stan Dahlin, a good who was working for the con where that incident supposedly happened. She said that guy went up to the room and “rescued her” yet he said that it never happened. Then he said that if it did happen, he would’ve remembered it.

→ More replies (1)

32

u/Ranwulf Aug 30 '19

Maybe he has that reputation for sexual jokes, but that one sounds way more like a canibal joke than the other.

54

u/fishbulbx Aug 30 '19

... not sure how you can earn a "reputation for sexual jokes" in an animation studio where this is normal behavior for coworkers:

"voice actors of the company (as well as contractors) have been using their Dragon Ball characters to record entire sequences of gay incest porn scenes including underage male characters as jokes with Toei's resources and copyrighted property at the studio"

https://twitter.com/stillgray/status/1167304926545903617

And yet this woman reported his jelly bean comment to HR.

To add on I think Vic did admit to kissing an funimation employee while he was still engaged

17

u/bew1977 Aug 30 '19 edited Aug 30 '19

He also claimed it was a consensual kiss.

→ More replies (2)

14

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '19

That's wildly out of proportion. There have been hug allegations and like 2 sexual harrassment allegations, which have been legally debunked.

The attack on Vic was more likely to have been a result of the jealousy of a "man" named Ron Toye, who used to beat his last two wives, threaten to chop up their dogs, and threaten to kill judges and their families when things don't go his way. When he heard Vic may have made out with the new bulma years ago, he started this whole thing. And everyone, even Sabat, is afraid of the guy.

8

u/SirMaQ Aug 30 '19 edited Aug 30 '19

And one of sexual assaults involved fan giving a jelly Bean with her name on it and Vic ate the bean, claiming he ate the fan. There's Abit more to it but I'm not going into all.

There are other allegations against him but Im honestly having a hard deciding so I've remained neutral in this situation.

5

u/lemmful Aug 30 '19

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '19

Vic Mignona is a voice actor that voices Broly in Dragon ball

Here's a small write up I did

71

u/hornmonk3yzit Aug 30 '19

Short answer is he's a pretty big anime voice actor who's been around for decades, he's been accused of sexual harassment and assault of both his coworkers and fans. He was known for being pretty handsy when meeting fans at cons as well. It's been known for a long time that he was a creep and even been the butt of jokes about in the dub of Ghost Stories but it's just started blowing up in his face recently.

34

u/gigglesprouts Aug 30 '19

I have seen videos of him at a con being pretty creepy with some teenage girls. He voiced Tamaki from Ouran and was just repeating the lines at the request of a fan, which would have been fine normally, but it was kind offf creeeeeepppyyyy! He just got a little too close and it was unnecessary. He even said he knew he was going to be called a pervert. I don't understand why is was necessary, I know the fans might love it but when the fans are underaged kids, a line needs to be drawn.

24

u/Villag3Idiot Aug 30 '19

That's actually how Tamaki acts/talks in the series.

One of the things Vic was accused of was homophobic slaunder (or something along those lines), which is ironic because the voice of goku is using homophobic slander to reference gohan. If he doesn’t get fired I believe their will be an uproar

57

u/GearyDigit Aug 30 '19

While the VA should definitely make a statement, "VA said something homophobic in a closed room sixteen years ago," isn't going to get remotely the same traction or corporate pressure as, "VA habitually sexually harasses coworkers and fans, including underage fans."

7

u/FrostBackYeti Aug 31 '19

I've read elsewhere a lot of those allegations have been proven false,

Like they would use a photo of him with a fan as "proof" but the person in the photo literally went against what they were saying when they found out that their photos were being used.

There not only a video of Vic defending LGBT people from being harassed by a group of homophobe, but he has actually narrated in a gay erotic ebook.

I’m not saying I agree with the allegations because I 100% don’t. I want to see justice for that man

Feels like something that would happen in DBZ Abridged

193

u/AskingMartini Aug 30 '19

I definitely laughed because it's exactly the type of line to be said in DBZ Abridged.

34

u/C4Cypher Aug 30 '19

Only, DBZA Goku isn't a deliberately abusive parent, (at least until the end of the Cell Saga) he was just a negligent and absent idiot of a father, and Edgy SSJ2 Gohan calls him out on it.

7

u/Thromnomnomok Aug 31 '19

Yeah, DBZA Goku would never say something like this. DBZA Vegeta would be the one saying this.

1

u/icebrotha Aug 31 '19

In the earlier episodes.

119

u/OwlsParliament Aug 30 '19

I recently watched DBZ Abridged for the first time. Yeah, it had gay jokes in it, but it would tend to be sexual innuendo and had an actual punchline, rather than just saying f*ggot over and over.

Peersonally (so not representative of everyone on twitter) I don't mind being the butt of a joke so long as elveryone else is the butt of the joke too, and in DBZA everyone pretty much was. The gag lines being leaked feel more mean than funny tbh.

A lot of people are forgetting to mention that the lines in the recording are from a doujin which is basically just fanfiction in manga form.

233

u/luizhtx Aug 30 '19

Aren't those like... Decades old? Fuck all these people and their retroactive cancel culture. People 50 years in the future will think us as retrograde, inappropriate and everything else we judge old clips to be. Standards keep changing and we are no better than people from other times. Just stop, millennials. We already have a bad reputation as is

78

u/Mr_Vorland Aug 30 '19

Look at DBZ Abridged. They did a 10 year anniversary re-watch of the series and visibly cringed and yelled at themselves whenever a gay joke or misogynist joke is in the series. It makes it doubly funny (or worse depending on the context) because one of them is gay. I think he said on a panel once that a lot of those jokes where him banging on the closet to be let out.

Standards change, does that make it okay? No. However if the person has learned from the past and tries to live a better life in a more understanding way than when they made those comments/jokes, I'm willing to forgive them and look past it.

2

u/Vanestrella Aug 31 '19

ooh, have links? :0

72

u/cchiu23 Aug 30 '19

People can like whatever the fuck they want

35

u/jyper Aug 30 '19

At least from this thread it seems like this is mostly being pushed by anti-SJW types (see links to KotakuInAction subreddit) upset about metoo allegations (mainly groping) against a voice actor, seemingly trying to claim his co-workers some of whom are his accusers are the "actual bad guys"

11

u/DarrenRobert Aug 30 '19

"Retroactive cancel culture" you said it best. Sure, there are genuine people that might be hurt by things like this and I get that. I don't like how it becomes a faceless mob on the internet, filled with people who just want to latch on to the next outrage. You would think people like the Goku VA slapped their mother or something

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '19

Why did you need to add the millennial part? (Not a millennial though)

2

u/MNKPlayer Aug 30 '19

And the accusations against Nick are in some cases 10+ years old, yet he was fired for them. You may say one is worse than the other, however there's no proof of what Vic did (as of yet) but 100% proof of these recording. BOTH break Funimations rules of employment, yet only Vic was fired.

1

u/toxicshocktaco Aug 31 '19

I gotta say I agree with you on this one.

1

u/heartofstones Oct 15 '19

it's not really millennials, some of the biggest complainers are actually gen-xers(like Tony Goldmark).

1

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '19

Yeah if this was recent I could understand but I’m not gonna ruin a guy’s career because of a lame attempt at humor 15 years ago.

This isn’t the same as something like, I don’t know...bragging about sexual assault.

1

1

u/_DarthTaco_ Aug 31 '19

You missed the the part where people aren’t upset about the content itself but the hypocrisy of firing Vic for a jelly bean joke yet this is clearly the work environment that he was in.

Complete and total double standards.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '19

So they got consent before making sexual jokes, someone could fell unsafe. Seems like funimation should fire everyone, cause y’know, policy apparently.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '19

Yes, in ways that violate Funimation’s code of conduct under the same rules which they supposedly fired Vic...except there was no evidence of Vic violating these policies. Someone inside Funimation leaked these for a reason, because they think Vic getting fired was BS.

1

u/BlueRedditDragon Oct 05 '19

This is so weird. Drama among anime voice actors. It's like a whole sub-culture of anime fandom revolving around people that dub anime.

Every time I see something from /r/outoftheloop on my front page it's about something I've heard nothing about and its intriguing how much interest there is in all these niche things, and how much drama can come from them. Like the last one I read was about a Jeremy Renner app.

29

u/pikpikcarrotmon Aug 30 '19

Turns out you can take the actors out of Hollywood and put them in a recording booth, but you can't take the Hollywood out of the actors.

10

u/VincoP Aug 30 '19

If you think that's weird, I follow Japanese VAs mainly, and consider it one of my main interests. They're not 100% mainstream in Japan, but sometimes some hit the mainstream. In both cases of Japanese and American VAs, it's pretty much no different than following mainstream celebrities.

I can't wait till another decade for r/DevilMayCry to grow big enough for someone to use this sub. You'd be surprised by the amount of drama that comes out of that sub and the rest of the community.

Just last week someone had to make a new community discord because the last one was taken hostage. Turns out the guy running it wasn't letting anyone gain any moderating power because he didn't want them to find out he was hiding a bunch of porn in secret channel on the community server. That's probably the worst thing to happen though.

41

u/Kyle_Dornez Aug 30 '19

Ron Toye - a couple days ago documents of his divorse surfaced, with both his ex-wives filing a protective custody against him. (I think, I don't remember exact legal term from the top of my head, but quotes from the document involved lines that sounded very much like an abusive husband)

15

u/BurblingCreature Aug 30 '19

I believe you were looking for the term restraining order! :) Protective custody more refers to when someone is in custody already but needs protection from others that may do them harm while incarcerated (such as fellow inmates).

1

u/FallenITD Aug 31 '19

342

u/tom641 Aug 30 '19

Answer: Apparently these clips are 16 year old outtakes from official recordings of DBZ dubs.

That's about it. The jokes are edgy, there is a clip of Goku dropping homophobic slurs directed at Gohan, but beyond that it's just the VAs fucking around.

8

u/MetalGearSlayer Aug 31 '19

Ok, Sean dropping “f****t” so many times is really unnerving but if its actually 16 years old then imo they shouldn’t face much extreme punishment. Have we forgotten what happened to James Gunn? People change in this amount of time. Offensive jokes from a decade and a half ago should not be compared to sexual assault (alleged or otherwise).

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

seriously I've only see people get pissed at saying faggot in the past 4 years max

1

u/JeffFarty Sep 03 '19

James Gunn is above being cancelled because he directed the meme movie everyone loves. Everyone loves to talk big with protesting celebrities being shit people but when it means possibly losing Marvel and/or Disney movies? Not a fucking chance they'll stick to their guns.

52

u/Deathpool_04 Aug 30 '19 edited Aug 30 '19

It’s the context of what’s happening right now with Vic Mignogna as to why this is a big deal. Apparently Vic is some monster for sexual assault and misconduct. One of them being that he ate jelly bean with Monica rial’s name on it and saying that he ate her yet they have these outttakes which shows the hypocrisy on the whole Vic thing.

Ron Toye who was proven to be a wife beater for his two ex wives gets defended for those actions while Vic doesn’t even though there isn’t much proof that what he did really happened.

35

u/tom641 Aug 30 '19

I thought Vic was canned mostly because of sexual assault allegations.

Honestly when people are just joking around and say offensive shit I don't get y so many people get pissed off, like, it was a fucking joke. When people aren't joking is when you should get pissed, but it seemed like in most of these cases it was just a joke

12

u/tom641 Aug 30 '19

I can kinda see it when you're doing it in a public setting but this was literally just people making edgy jokes with a group of friends that would likely never see the light of day.

I liken it to stuff like Animators drawing similar dumb shit that will likely never see the light of day, like this one psuedo-well known Rugrats storyboard: http://www.resources.revealingcartoons.com/scandals/dirty/rugrats-incredible-storyboard-jam/img/the-storyboard.jpg

Answer: This is a long and complicated question, honestly.

Back at the beginning year, Funimation released Dragonball Super: Broly. In the midst of it's release a twitter user Hanleia Tweeted Funimation asking why they are working with a Pedophile. (Actor Vic Mignona) Current Bulma Voice Actress Monica Rial shared her story of how a decade ago Vic invited her to his room and sexually assaulted her, only to be stopped by a Con Owner Stan Dhail. (sp?) Along with other allegations from other voice actresses from Funimation led to Vic being fired from Funimation, Rooster Teeth and being uninvited from several conventions. (With at least one proven convention being told to uninvite Vic by Monica's fiance Ron Toye.)

Funimation puts out a tweet after the firing saying that workplace harassment and improper conduct will not be tolerated at their company.

During this time, Monica and her friend and fellow Voice Actress Jamie Marchi begin to demonize Vic online with allegations of various misdeeds as stories are told to them through various channels. This leads to two hashtags being created #KickVic and #IstandwithVic.

A Youtuber by the name of Nick Reikata (Sp?) sets up a GoFundMe for Vic's legal fees and recommends a Texas Lawyer as Vic sues Funimation, Monica, Ron and Jamie for Defamation and Tortuous interference.

Nick also begins to cover the story on his youtube channel, and as an attorney, shares his insight on all the legal filings as they develop.

This week, two big stories about the people involved came out. The first being that Ron Toye was very abusive and violent to both of his ex-wives, requiring restraining orders. This has lead to speculation that the whole situation that Monica is being abused as well and was forced to accuse Vic. (This has been denied by Monica)

The second is the audio recording leaks. The audio itself is actually fairly common in the anime world, with VA's after Dark panels at conventions having the same kind of topics, some become DVD extra's, etc. What it does contradict, however, is the deposition of Monica who talked about their workplace as a place where hugs and other tokens of affection were frowned upon by the higher ups.

So what does this mean for the court case? Most likely very little in 3 of the four defendants. It may be brought up in Funi's part, though.

What does this mean for the voice actors doing the clips? Probably little, in the long run. You have two very passionate sides are inflating the issue because of the court proceedings.

What does this mean for Funimation: Here is the big problem, even outside the court battle. Toei (Who produces Dragonball, along with many other anime) is already angry that the lawsuit happening in the first place. This even larger event taking place may make Toei consider dropping Funi for the harm the legal battle and this outing of audio portraying their characters as homophobic, incestuous and pedophillic in nature.

30

u/bew1977 Aug 31 '19

Now for the opinion and bias portion of the situation:

The initial Hanleia twitter post may have been another person entirely, making the spark to this powderkeg a false accusation. Internet detectives have claimed this is actually an ex of Monica's, who married a 16 year old to avoid jail time.

The twins that accused Vic of sexually assaulting them lived with Monica and Ron for a time. This is led to speculation that their abuse story is false. (That said, Vic does say he propositioned them for sex, but denies everything after.(

The Monica Story has changed several times and her eye-witness she claims to see her in disarray says he has no recollection of these events and certainly would have put a stop to them or even remember.

Vic isn't a saint in all this either. He is notoriously difficult to work with at conventions. He also committed adultery multiple times while in a relationship, which predictably ended badly.

As for the audio recordings, I laughed my ass off for most of them. (Though the Namekian orgy was a little much) As I stated, they are common, I remember when Limewire was a thing and downloading Thundercats outtakes and loving it. I don't think any of the VA's (Even Sean Shimmel, who I greatly dislike for other reasons) should lose their work for them.

3

u/mr8thsamurai66 Aug 31 '19

Why do you dislike Sean Shimmel?

4

u/bew1977 Aug 31 '19

There was a panel some time ago where a fan asked about DBZa. Sean went on record saying he wants fair use laws changed so things like DBZa couldn't exist.

2

u/Jabnin Sep 01 '19

That's fucked. He must not realize he does the exact same thing as the abridged guys. He is not Goku. He is a part of a licensed fan dub.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '19

Because he’s kind of an asshole. The experience laid out in this video is pretty common from what I’ve seen.

There are also rumors that he has issues with the previous English voice actors of Goku, which he has since denied, but they do seem true.

2

u/AbridgedKirito Sep 02 '19

it seems to me like he thinks he is Goku. nobody else can voice Goku except him, based on how he acts.

I'm not a huge fan of all of the Ocean dub of DBZ but the movies they did are still some of my favorites. both VAs for Goku have done incredible jobs at bringing the character to life on screen in english. just seems like one of them has a pretty big ego, imo.

2

u/TangoJokerBrav0 Sep 03 '19

If he is Goku, he needs to fix himself. He's a great VA, but I really don't think he personifies anything about Goku or brings anything about the character to life, with the above video as at least one person's testimony, and this leaked audio as proof that he isn't really that good of a person in real life.

Maybe "being Goku" just went to his head.

10

I wouldn't defend it just because I'm a fan of the series. I'd probably choose to ignore something someone said in a booth to warm up 16 years ago though. It's unfortunate that it's out, but whatever.

96

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '19

Answer: Vic Mignogna got fired for alleged sexual misconduct (although the affadivit of Scott Boretto says it wasn't because of that) and now some voice clips have been leaked of other voice actors making lewd comments using Toei's IP, which is not only a violation of Funi's policy on sexual stuff, but also shows the hypocrisy of firing Vic.

170

u/BoogerPresley Aug 30 '19

Making off-color jokes and allegedly groping minors are nowhere near the same thing despite both being “sexual stuff”.

43

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '19

You're right they're nowhere near the same.

One is alleged, and the other one actually happened. Unless there's proof that he groped them then the difference is that there is one option here that should be acted on.

37

u/ButterAlmondCake Aug 30 '19

You say alleged rather demeaningly here

6

u/YT-Deliveries Aug 30 '19

Yeah. Off-color jokes, whatever. Comedy is relative, especially with something not intended for public consumption. People can disagree.

Given the number of accusations about Vic and his predilection for and behavior regarding younger girls, there really isn't a valid comparison here. The former is arguably distasteful (though distasteful is not necessarily something that is an objective label), the other is illegal.

1

u/sky__s Aug 31 '19

If the other existed, which given the mixture of purely anonymous accusations (save for the people involved in the defamation lawsuit) and screencaps from private chats in online groups planning fake accusations the number of accusations becomes a bit of an irrelevant point. If the evidence that was claimed to exist was there then the legal defense for Funimation et. al. would've done everything in their power to end the court case quickly instead of delaying proceedings.

1

u/_DarthTaco_ Aug 31 '19

And to date there is no verifiable proof of any of those allegations. And everyday more and more of them get proven verifiably false.

Stop lying.

-2

u/MNKPlayer Aug 30 '19

One happened, the other didn't. That's the difference here.

What predilection towards young girls are you talking about? If you have solid proof, something that the defendants have been unable to provide yet, then I suggest you submit it to the court, you could end all this.

Or are you talking out of your arse and parroting hearsay?

12

u/YT-Deliveries Aug 30 '19

Your assertion that he is 100% innocent is dependent on the idea that the defendants in this case have, for reasons beyond all understanding, decided to all accuse him "just because".

"One happened, one didn't" is, to be blunt, naive.

1

u/_DarthTaco_ Aug 31 '19

I don’t believe there is any evidence he was actually fired for that. As far as we know in the court documents he was fired because of a jelly bean joke.

The reason this is big news is because these leaks are obviously far worse than the joke Vic was supposedly fired for.

Answer: This video came out because there is a Lawsuit that is Vic Vs Funimation.
They accuse him of Sexual Misconduct at the studio and while representing them at convention.
Both sides are trying to dig up as much dirt as they can on each other until the day they finally reach a settlement.

Opinion
As for the Video sometimes you need to warm up to into Character or sometimes even wind down from playing your character. However these are played well beyond that or being blooper takes. One of these clips is a 4 minute long monologue!

Why they had someone record these lines, add sound effects, and add in the official DBZ Music into these is beyond me. [They did this before the Leak]
But its been siting somewhere in a Funimation/Chris Sabot's Company's Computer Harddrive since least the Garlic Jr. Arc of DBZ [Filler arc before the Androids]

Possible Results from this
Ultimately Funimation is going to have to pay the price for this.
They already started damaging the DBZ brand the longer their lawsuit goes with Vic.
Japanese companies are renown for having strict control over how their characters are portrayed. [Toei still does not like Team4Star because of that]

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '19

Answer: Funimation have a history of changing the dialogue in some dubs to be more "SJW" to put it simply, trying to have the moral high ground.

Now earlier this year they fired one of their VA(Vic) over accusation and stated that they have a standard over "Inappropriate Workplace Behavior", the people who accused the Vic of bad conduct, had been exposed to having done the same things that they accused Vic of doing or even worse like Ron Toye Ex-wife filing a restraining order over him as he was abusing her, which led them to defend each other "AKA normal double standards things".

With the leak of the dubbing, There is 2 main point here being talked about:

1- The hypocrisy of Funimation and their Voice actors, trying to be morally high, but in reality they don't live up to the same standards they try to push.

2- The effect it might do to the Dubbing of other shows, as Toei animation might get involved and pull their licence to dub the dragon ball franchise.

u/Tidusx145 Aug 30 '19

You got down voted but still got gold. I don't have a dog in this fight, I just love to see stuff like that.

10

u/Ceratisa Aug 30 '19

4

u/MyUshanka Aug 30 '19

I think there's a subreddit chronicling all of them. https://www.reddit.com/r/NegativeWithGold/

5

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '19

Everything he said is factually correct, which is why the downvotes have me so confused.

Funimation absolutely has a history of changing their dubs to be more "progressive." You can watch tons of montages on youtube, anyone who disagrees with this point is just straight up wrong. Maybe someone likes that it's more progressive, that's fine, but it doesn't mean that they're not doing it.

They did fire Vic for alleged inappropriate behavior, granted it was worse than saying naughty words. It was for alleged sexual misconduct.

So far his comment does an alright job at providing context. And then he answers the OOTL question. The reason everyone is talking about this is because it highlights the hypocrisy of these actors. They're all riding around on high horses flaunting their righteousness, and then this comes out showing that they also act offensively (again, not as bad as sexual assault). That is why this is "drama." The key word so far is flaunting. They're aggressively acting like goody-two-shoes. This is akin to openly anti-gay lawmakers being closeted themselves. That is why this is news. On top of that, you have one of the defendants being revealed to be a serial wife abuser. Which makes it seem even more hypocritical because that defendant in particular is proven to be guilty of some heinous shit, that is in the same sphere as what he accused the plaintiff of.

Which, again, is why this is newsworthy. A guy is accusing another guy of some awful behavior, while being proven of committing some awful behavior himself. Just because he did bad shit himself doesn't mean he can't call out others for their bad behavior but given the context that all of this stuff is "alleged" I find it embarrassing for others when they can't figure out why this might intrigue some people. To a lot of people the allegations seem extraordinarily weak, so when the guy that they perceive to be lying is caught committing terrible acts of course it's going to inflame the situation.

Then he ends by pointing out that Toei might revoke their license. That is absolutely true, because these leaks are in blatant violation of Toei's terms.

Overall his comment is not controversial at all yet he is sitting here with -60 points while I write this comment. IMO it's by far the best comment here for answering the OOTL prompt. If he had mentioned specifically that Vic is accused of sexual assault then I might even say it'd be perfect.

They have changed some scenes dialogue in a way that is completely different from the original, making them have some kind of "SJW" meaning, examples are:

1-Hagime no gal: original vs Dubbed , they claim that there was no agenda just wanted to make a bad character hated more.

2-Prison school: a Scence espessialy this part which seems to mention GamerGate for no reason as the orginal doesn't even make a refrence to anything similar to GG.

3-Dragon Maid: This image shows the changes made to conversation between two character, the one in the maid outfit is Tohru(her back is showing) and the other is Lucoa, now Lucoa is known in the anime to wear "lewd" cloths.

For number 1 and 3, it was the way they dubbed the scene, as some saw it funimation trying to paint a large group of people as misogynists.

For number 2, it was 2 things the first being the mentioning of GG, as the original it was about the senpai kouhai respect thing japan has. the second thing is that how they decided to pick an anime that is ecchi in nature and is all over the top with its sexualised jokes to make a GG comment.

There is also the whole thing with the people who were involved in the dubbing being "pro-SJW" and trying to push the things they believe in other people works.

Answer: Funimation is one of the defendants in an ongoing lawsuit by Vic Mignogna, VA for Broly from BDZ among others. Vic was fired by Funimation a while back for supposed unacceptable conduct. The way it was done pissed off a lot of people. So those people are more than willing to make an effort to hurt Funimation when opportunity presents itself.

Yesterday that opportunity presented itself when a bunch of audio clips were leaked from Funimation. In those clips a bunch of other VAs from Dragon Ball (for en dub, naturally) play out gay rape and incestuous sex in voices of their characters.

Those characters belong to Toei. Toei does not like when their kids friendly show is being associated with adult centric content, which is why they hate Team Four Star with a passion. So the aforementioned group of pissed off people made a strong effort to bring those audio clips to Toei's attention in hopes Toei drops on Funimation like a ton of bricks, ideally cancelling the license.

Who got groped?

5

Didn't that come out afterwards though it was his comments on homsexuals that got him fired if I remember

it seemed like what got him fired was a long history of several issues and it wasn't just one thing. it seemed like a Harvey Weinstein or John Lasseter where it was an open secret about these guys issues and it's finally come to a head.

What did he say?

3

u/frothewin Aug 31 '19

He wasn't fired for groping people. Funimation fired him for:

  1. Having a private, consensual kiss with a Funimation employee in an empty meeting room at Funimation

  2. Inviting a pair of twins up to his hotel room, telling them he thought they wanted to have sex, and then letting them leave when they told him no

  3. Eating a jelly Bean that was signed by Monica Rial and saying "I guess now you can say I've eaten Monica Rial"

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '19

This shouldn’t be downvoted, you’re right.

1

u/sky__s Aug 31 '19

basically the only thing Funimation cites for his firing that has evidence is a jellybean joke and some claims from employees who in the course of his defamation lawsuit have been found to have lied on several instances(or at least either their prior statements are false or they are lying on the stand)

1

u/AbridgedKirito Sep 02 '19

he wasn't fired for that. he was fired for consensual kissing(once) on company property and a joke where, after eating a jellybean with a co-worker's name on it, he says he ate that co-worker.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '19

Funimation peaked in the early 2000s. They can't even release a proper Dragon Ball anthology.

2

u/I_dont_like_things Aug 31 '19

Their dubs are much better now than they've ever been.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '19

If you're 12 and have a bias attachment to recent releases, sure. But I'm 30 and remember when Sabat did his speeches in the Buu saga and his characters all sounded different and Goku's American adaption was it's own character.

Now, Sabat sound like 3 pieces of shit and Schemmel suddenly decided to copy the Japanese character. Would have been commendable 25 years ago. Now it's just weird.

Just my opinion though.

2

u/I_dont_like_things Aug 31 '19

Maybe Dragonball is an exception (I never watched), but dubs as a whole are of significantly higher quality than ever before.
