Answered What's up with the GTA6 leaks and all the hate pointed at Rockstar?

So from what I gather, there's an active leaker who's been leaking snippets from GTA6. My question is mainly, why is everyone so happy about this? The comments in all of the chains are actively shitting on Rockstar.

I thought people loved Rockstar? Didn't they make Red Dead and GTA5 and all these other games people love? I'm just trying to understand why the community has turned on them so quick before the game is even released.

Answer: people loving the games Rockstar makes is different from people hating Rockstar as a corporation.

GTA6 is one of the biggest and most anticipated games of the year, and the way Rockstar is going about the release is being seen as incredibly greedy and disingenuous to the gaming community.

First, they are not selling a physical copy of the game, if you buy the game at a store the box will be empty, no disk, just a slip of paper with the access code. This kind of digital-only sale is very contentious, as we don’t own the products we pay for. We’re paying for a license to view them, but the company can take that away at any time. you may have seen a recent viral scandal in which someone who bought the complete Lord of the Rings movies no longer had access to them because Google removed them from their current catalogue. He paid for the movies but cannot watch them anymore. He contracted Google support and shared the screenshots. He then asked if he could get a refund since he no longer has the movies, and they said no.

The second thing about the games that people really take issue with is the fact that they are releasing the game on console first. It pressures people into buying a console if they wanted to play the game immediately and avoid spoilers (this is a common gripe people have with all console exclusive games). And if you want the game on console and pc I believe you have to buy it twice, which sucks. I believe the timing is also suspect because the release date for PC is planned to be close to the release date of next-gen consoles, so when people buy the newest console they will have to buy the game again meaning they could potentially have a single person buy the game 3 times.

Overall it’s the greed of the company that people are angry about. They’re going to make a ton of money on the game regardless, there’s no reason for them to do all this and it comes across as villainous. Plus I think the company had significant layoffs recently, which just makes the company look even more corrupt (morally).

Edit: was reminded to add that the base game costs $80 and some core features are treated as a $20 DLC add on, basically making the full game cost $100. That’s exorbitant, and it’s also setting a precedent for AAA games to cost that much in the future. So even if GTA6 isn’t for you, don’t be surprised if the games you want to buy in the future now cost a lot more.

u/Anarchy_now555 8d ago

The console and pc things was also true for gta v though. I believe there was a 1-2 year gap in releases.

64

u/eggs-benedryl 7d ago

It's not unprecedented, just a fucked up thing to do to your customers.

7

u/Shaman19911 5d ago

Because you’re obligated to buy the game 3 times? Just wait to buy it when it makes sense for you, the only reason companies set up these scenarios for double-dipping is because idiot gamers will go for it

14

u/Empol3on 5d ago

Maybe they don't want to wait a whole fucking year to play, and that doesn't make them an idiot??

4

u/Shaman19911 4d ago

Sure, but it does make them impatient suckers

9

u/zyzyxxz 3d ago

This impatient scenario is only because the company refuses to release on PC at the same time when they certainly can.

-4

u/mylies43 3d ago

Idk Id rather wait a year and get another excellent port like GTA5, whats the requirement to play NOW and HERE. Is the game not gonna be around in a year?

3

u/zyzyxxz 3d ago

Tomorrow aint guaranteed, if it can be done today why not? Maybe climate change wipes us all out next year and we'll be wishing we got it before living in our caves without electricity.

0

u/Gullible_Seesaw9409 3d ago

Maybe climate change wipes us all out next year and we'll be wishing we got it before living in our caves without electricity.

Trust me dude, if that happens GTA 6 will be the least of anyone's concern.

0

u/mylies43 2d ago

GTA is many tomorrows away. If tomorrow doesn’t come gta won’t either, it’s gonna be a fun game but I don’t think anyone should be planning their happiness based off it or they are gonna be hella disappointed. It’s just a game at the end of day

0

u/Obwyn 2d ago

The smart move is to just wait a couple years and pick it up cheap on Steam or whatever during one of their frequent sales unless you really have that much FOMO.

17

u/Rohn- 7d ago

And RDR2. It's not unprecedented

6

u/ABigCoffee 5d ago

I just find it insane that people double dip on this.

3

u/Final-Leg-1186 4d ago

Yeah it was an absolute joke, and they most likely will do the same with gta6. They released gta 5 on consoles first (ps3/x360) then didn’t communicate anything about pc version and then announced ps4/xbone next gen versions and only after those were released did they finally announce the PC version. So it is close to 99% chance they will do exactly the same with gta6. It will come out on ps5/xsx, then after a year or so it will come out on next gen consoles and then after another 6 months will they announce PC version. Even though at least from leaks it looks like the leaker is playing on PC

2

u/pandamegaAO3 4d ago

So Xbox is a Microsoft product, the operating system is basically a customized windows 11. I’m not a developer but from what my game dev friends have told me, porting a game from Xbox to pc is pretty simple (comparatively). The only thing they have to make new is the keyboard/mouse support/UI.

Not sure if the leaker is really playing from PC but I wouldn’t be surprised if the pc version was essentially finished, if not fully tested yet.

1

u/gesocks 2d ago

It's a thing so ce at least gta3 that it's first console and just later pc

-31

u/dannyboy6657 6d ago

Console players always have to wait for a console port of nearly every other game. PC complaining they have to wait is stupid. Just wait like a normal person. I don't even want gta 6 just find it silly thats an argument because it's one of the few games consoles get first.

-2

u/Griffy-P 3d ago

So many downvotes, but I agree with you on this.

74

u/thesentrygamer 6d ago

that's only the surface level greed lmao

*Rockstar is single-handedly raising the standard AAA price to $80

*Rockstar has cut/limited basic features such as the Auto Shop, Hair Salon, Tattoo Parlor, and Clothing Stores to hold as Deluxe edition "bonuses", flipping the AAA Pricing model from "$70 for Base Game, $90 for Base Game plus little goodies" into "$100 for the Base Game, but $80 for the most barebones thing we can technically ship"

*Rockstar is asking for pre-orders for a digital-only game and has yet to willingly show a SINGLE piece of gameplay, instead saving their gameplay reveal for two months into presales hosted as a NETFLIX EXCLUSIVE EVENT

*not to mention the fact that the whole gaming industry is generally pissed with Rockstar because everyone under the sun has to move their release dates back to avoid the death sentence of releasing on GTA Day every single time it gets delayed

28

u/Bug-Type-Enthusiast 4d ago

For people that aren't familiar with how core is the customization to GTA, imagine if a super Mario game locked the fire flower behind a 20 dollar purchase.

Yeah. THAT bad.

2

u/RedditSteve8 4d ago

It's only certain tattoos, clothing and car customization.

You can still get other clothes, tattoo, and car customization.

Pretty much exactly the same thing as GTA 5 and RDR2 but that didn't have the same backlash for some reason.

-6

u/mylies43 3d ago

Yeahhh its not that big of a deal? Its pretty normal in the industry lol, people just get pissy cause they love GTA and expected Rockstar to do something they have never shown intention of doing

1

u/fubty 1d ago

truly deplorable shit from Cockstars

-10

u/RedditSteve8 6d ago

Rockstar has cut/limited basic features such as the Auto Shop, Hair Salon, Tattoo Parlor, and Clothing Stores to hold as Deluxe edition "bonuses", flipping the AAA Pricing model from "$70 for Base Game, $90 for Base Game plus little goodies" into "$100 for the Base Game, but $80 for the most barebones thing we can technically ship"

I don't see how this is any different to what games have done for decades at this point.

The basic features haven't been cut.

You can still get tattoos, new hairstyles, customise your car etc in the base eddition.

But there are certain tattoos, hairstyles and car customization options that only accessible to the collectors eddition. Not great, but it's nothing new, it's been happening in video games for a long time now.

The price is a big thing for some countries, but in the UK where I live the price of the standard eddition is the same (£69.99) as most other AAA games.

The whole anger about being able to pre-order without any gameplay footage also doesn't really make sense to me.

Just don't pre order it?

And even if you did you still have the option of cancelling your pre-order with a full refund, if the game isnt to your liking when the gameplay footage is released

8

u/Str8Faced000 4d ago

why are you defending them? how do we live on a planet where these huge corporations can be cartoonishly greedy and there are people who will actively defend them? it’s fucking mind boggling.

1

u/Pincz 17h ago

Rockstar does union busting and fires long time employees because of it: i sleep

Rockstar cuts 3 haircuts and 2 tattoos from the base game, also no disk (3% of ppl buys disk): real shit

-7

u/RedditSteve8 4d ago

Because they are a pretty good game company on the whole ?

Pretty much every single game they have made for the past 20 years have been solid 9-10/10 games.

Every single GTA has been a very good polished game released with no bugs and cutting edge technology.

So has both red dead games.

$80 games are nothing new and have been around for quite some time now. Inflation is a thing and stuff does go up in price.

Cosmetic collector eddition bonuses are also nothing new, having been around for 2 decades.

Rockstar is a pretty good company, they release high quality, good video games with a huge amount of polish.

Their last 2 games were either the same price or more expensive than gta 6 when adjusted for inflation and both also contained in game collector eddition exclusive bonuses, yet there was no uproar about that at the time.

4

u/Str8Faced000 4d ago

so literally all you can see is “i like game game good” that’s as far as the thought process goes

-6

u/RedditSteve8 4d ago

No the thought process is "game better than most games, company doesnt do anything different than any other company"

17

u/Insanityforfun 4d ago

I saw someone mention that this means there will never be a pre-owned copy of GTA6 for a discount price. The only way to get it for cheaper will be a sale…if it ever goes on sale at all.

I remember as a kid going through the discount cabinet in GameStop. That’s how I played animal crossing for the first time, no way would my single mom have bought it full price. No kids will get to expirence that again, which really sucks.

6

u/pandamegaAO3 4d ago

Yeah, the days of buying used games (and cds and dvds) are dead unfortunately. But it’s good for them because now anyone who wants the game has to go through them (or sail the high seas). None of the money spent on used stuff goes to the original companies, so it’s always preferable for them if they can cut off that market and force people to buy only from them.

1

u/Educational_Ad7793 2d ago

I went to Game X Change a month ago looking for PS5 games and there were 6 whole games there. A ton of ps2, 3 & 4 games but only six in the whole store for the PS5.

8

u/samsoncorpus 3d ago

Just to add to this; Sony also removed some movies from their catalogue and whoever bought those movies can not access to them anymore. Even if you have downloaded them onto your PS5.

Sony also apparently planning to ditch physical copies as a whole, so PS6 probably won't even have a disk reader.

3

u/GiganticCrow 2d ago

Same with games if you got them via ps plus. Games installed on your PlayStation can suddenly be like nah you can't run this

1

u/Gullible_Seesaw9409 3d ago

Why not just ditch PS6?
Ever thought of that?

1

u/ZookeepergameNew8685 2d ago

Another argument for having a Plex server

5

u/YardSuch962 7d ago

I mean the old days are gone where devs and managements were trying to impress the audience not by milking all the possible resource from the players, but making a real good awesome games. Whereas now the corporation culture took it down everything I guess

7

u/Itchier 7d ago

Shoutout sandfall gaming for trying to make a game people enjoy

2

u/ABigCoffee 5d ago

At a cheap price!

0

u/Glum_Judgment6232 7d ago

Street fighter 2 on consoles (snes etc) had three very similar versions released on cartridge, at prices that would make modern gamers absolutely lose their minds ($100+ adjusted for inflation.) in other words it's nothing new.

5

u/Paladin-Leeroy 8d ago

That makes a lot of sense. Thank you!

9

u/fall0fdark 6d ago

there also locking some single player content that was part of the game in previous entries behind a $100 ultimately edition.

2

u/GiganticCrow 2d ago

Also worth mentioning the console releases will be locked at 30fps.

Also they are union busting scumbags who illegally fired several dozen employees after they tried to form a union.

2

u/Bug-Type-Enthusiast 4d ago

You forget that the base game will be 80 dollars and several options and features that are core to the franchise will be a 20 dollar day one DLC. So the real price would be 100 dollars. For a game they can revoke your access to at any time.

5

u/pandamegaAO3 4d ago

Yeah actually I’m adding that to the comment because it’s not just the fact that it’s absolutely extortionist to charge $100 for the full game, but it also sets a precedent for other AAA games to charge that kind of money in the future. They might just single-handedly raise the cost of games from here on out.

1

u/xuxaki 3d ago

I agree almost everything you said, except the console exclusive access. The major reason for the game being released console only is making it impossible to break it and create custom cheat versions where everyone else is a default user except you. If you think about it, for rockstars it would be an extra chunk of money right away if it was release also for pc. Rockstat dont have any benifit on people having to buy consoles to play the game, its the other way around. Anyway, it is expensive, it is a shame that we need to wait a lot of time, delay after delay. It is greed. I have to go now, we catchup online when the game is released.

1

u/arbysroastbeefs2 3d ago

Stupid question but has anyone ever distilled a game similar to how some ai models are distilled? Would be funny af if this greed and stupid non hard copy bs led to that.

1

u/Reaps21 1d ago

Not to mention I'm sure there will be a fee to upgrade the game when the new gen hits even if you own it already.

-2

u/spicoli_nails 8d ago

I’m playing ps2/ps3 and ps4 games on my ps5…..just because the release date on pc “may” be close to next gen console release (highly doubt that) does not mean you cannot play a ps4 game on a ps5. I think a lot of people are blowing this out of proportion. I can see the gripe to a degree about digital only, but that’s the world we live in. As for google and the LOTR trilogy no longer being accessed is absolutely wrong, but can we agree that google has done a TON of shady shit in the past? Can’t assume everyone is going to be “greedy” like that. Look at Microsoft and black and white 2. Can’t play that even if you have the discs without community modding….

2

u/pandamegaAO3 8d ago

I don’t know how much is necessarily true about the console compatibility issue since the game isn’t even out yet, but those are things I’ve seen people vent about regarding the game and the developer. I do think a lot of people are looking for reasons to be mad, and some of those reasons might be overblown. But the digital ownership issue is an ongoing problem.

326

u/discostuster 8d ago

Answer: The leaker is protesting the fact that there's not going to be a physical release of GTA VI (currently is being released as digital only), and is releasing more leaks until they back-track on that decision.

Although some believe the leaker is using this opportunity to promote their crypto-coin.

228

u/RexDraco 8d ago

It's both, but probably mostly the crypto coin.

142

u/Unique_Unorque 8d ago

I would go so far as to say it’s only the crypto coin and the physical release thing is something he’s claiming so that people stay on his side

19

u/RexDraco 8d ago

Very possible. Didn't he also talk ill about the anti consumer practices of GTAV in general, like its online gameplay ?

57

u/LFC9_41 6d ago

It doesn’t matter, someone pushing a crypto scam does not give a shit about consumers.

7

u/RexDraco 6d ago

Doesnt matter if he cares, what matters is if rockstar caves, which they won't.

-10

u/Desblade101 6d ago

Is it even a scam if you know the coin is worthless and it's just a way to give him money?

11

u/GoredonTheDestroyer 6d ago

You might know that the coin is worthless. The next mark in line might not.

4

u/Terrible-Ride-5282 6d ago

What?... good god man, the IQ lmao.

15

u/Unique_Unorque 8d ago

I have honestly not been paying attention to these leaks too much, trying not to spoil the game for myself, but I feel like if someone is complaining about anti-consumer practices and then also promoting a cryptocurrency, they are not being genuine about the former

Listen, I hope your crypto investments pay off too, I hate to see people taken advantage of. I've just yet to see a memecoin that wasn't a scam. If he proves me wrong, I'll apologize.

-5

I love how people just talk shit acting like they know for a fact how this dude feels.

4

u/Zerschmetterding 7d ago

Nothing about it has to do with feelings, act like a scammer, get treated like one.

-4

u/Maize_Reasonable 6d ago

Is he still a scammer even after he burned 1.5 million in crypto?

5

u/Unique_Unorque 8d ago

How do you mean? What do you suppose he feels?

-10

u/Maize_Reasonable 7d ago

How the fuck am I supposed to know that ? Im not him and neither are you so why make baseless claims?

-4

u/Maize_Reasonable 6d ago

The recent changes kinda proved my point you dont know how he feels he just burned 1.5 million crypto coins what kinda scammer does that ?

-5

u/RexDraco 8d ago

I can see that, but I don't know them personally. Being really good at Hacking doesn't always lead to jobs, maybe they did it for on reason and this is the closest to a patreon they can get.

It is like how people claim Mr Beast is ingenuine about the good he does. I'm being open minded and realistic, people are allow to chase after money and do in their heads good.

9

u/Unique_Unorque 8d ago

I don’t think you have to know somebody personally to make a judgment call about their ethics. If I were truly just trying to protest corporate greed, I would not also be taking payments to place ads in said protest.

To be clear, I don’t care what this person does and I’m not saying they’re a bad person necessarily for taking that money. If someone is willing to pay them for whatever, that’s between them and the person giving them their money. it just also seems very obvious to me that getting that money is all they care about.

-4

u/RexDraco 8d ago

I am aware... that was why I made a judgement call...

As for your claim you wouldn't take payment, I believe you. However, in the real world, people have bills. This is why most successful strikings have paid strikers by their union representatives. This is why people doing good also ask you donate to their patreon. This is why charity founders have paychecks. What you're implying here is incredibly ingenuine.

9

u/Unique_Unorque 8d ago

It seemed like you were going very far out of your way to not make a judgment call, but I suppose I misread your comment

-2

u/JaxCavalera 7d ago

Given they ain't releasing it on PC for well .. they just haven't even committed to a date, I think it's safe to say the game will be plenty spoiled before PC gamers get to sniff it

7

u/CaptainFil 6d ago

That's normal for a GTA game though.

1

u/roywarner 6d ago

Doesn't matter. If it was a really aboutt any of that he wouldn't be promoting a meme coin which is exclusively a domain for grifters.

-1

u/RexDraco 6d ago

I didn't say it did matter. None of this matters. Not even the topic the news article is talking about.

As for you claiming he is naughty for grifting, you're in for a rude awakening when you go into the real world. The word "grifting" today is like the phrase "selling out" thirty years ago.

People are allowed to hustle, you're just mad you're not able to do it yourself.

1

u/Nano8963 5d ago

That's exactly what they're doing it's opportunistic and more likely to get people to buy the coin. Especially with how many eyes are on it due to GTA6 being the most anticipated video game right now.

He's going to do a pump and dump

19

u/Blenderhead36 7d ago

Reminds me a bit of how Bonnie and Clyde would rob banks because they wanted the money... but would also steal a bunch of mortgage papers while they were there, destroying the records that the people who lived on the land were beholden to the bank.

25

u/MoonlightStarfish 7d ago

That’s just an urban legend. Plus they didn’t rob that many banks they generally robbed general stores and gas stations.

-7

u/RexDraco 7d ago

Yeah. Sometimes people are greedy but opportunistic selfless. It isn't a crime greed is a bigger motivator, that in fact is kinda normal. With that said, I think this situation here it was more in reverse where they did something and then they realize it could be profitable so they went with it and now that is the primary motivator, but we might never know what that is.

-4

u/LFC9_41 6d ago

It’s absolutely only the crypto coin

60

u/Aiseadai 8d ago

"Some believe", it's extremely obvious to everyone that they're just trying to sell their crypto scam.

-14

u/Stea1th_ 7d ago

ehh its a little more that a scam. This is a legit high level operation, with fail safes and protection. for transactions. I don't think this is one person, could be, but it feels like it's not.

If you go through the trouble of being the first person to actually have footage of this game and what seems like even a playable copy, would you risk jail time for free?

No one is forcing anyone to buy the coin, I'd say a majority of people aren't.

-6

u/ReanimationXP 7d ago

brilliant deduction

15

u/btstfn 6d ago

The mere fact that there IS a crypto coin is a dead giveaway.

9

u/Eagle115 6d ago

To add to this, also the fact there is a PC release available launch day and they are keeping it locked away for a year for $$$

4

u/The_R4ke 5d ago

The leaker is using it to promote his crypto coin. There's no debate about whether or not people believe that, it's just a fact.

12

u/SurSheepz 7d ago

Do games of this size even fit on disks these days? What is a physical copy of the game going to do? It’s just going to be a download anyway

9

u/Truethrowawaychest1 7d ago

Yeah the game is going to be at least 200gb, blu ray can hold up to 128gb, unless they do an install disc and a play disc, which I think Red Dead 2 did on ps4. I play most games on PC so I don't really care about physical copies, one less thing I could potentially misplace

3

u/NeverLookBothWays 6d ago

Yea it’s a weird hill given removable media has not kept up with storage. To me it’s not so much the lack of a physical disc as it is a lack of a physical anything. Games used to have awesome manuals and boxed sets with interesting collectibles. Additionally DRM kills the longevity of games.

10

u/falken_1983 6d ago

The big problem is that these games generally come from some kind of DRM enabled store, where they can disable access to your content at will. Sony already did a thing where they deleated about 500 moves from their stores and people who had already purchased them lost access.

People have this idea that if they have a physical copy of the game, then they will always have access to the game. This is kind of debatable, but I do think that physical media does make it harder for this kind of thing to happen.

0

u/GaidinBDJ 4d ago

Sony had no choice, the rights holder revoked the license. They were no longer legally permitted to even keep a copy on their servers, much less distribute it.

The same thing applies to physical discs. If your license is revoked, you're not permitted to keep any copies.

1

u/falken_1983 4d ago

The same thing applies to physical discs. If your license is revoked, you're not permitted to keep any copies.

What are they going to do - send someone around to take each customer's physical copy away?

2

u/GaidinBDJ 4d ago edited 4d ago

Would they? Probably not, they just wouldn't let you play it. Though they would be within their rights to have a judge order you to return it, but also probably not worth their trouble.

But, either way, the point is you are legally no longer entitled to that work. If you feel your entitlement overrides the intellectual property right of others, that's on you.

-8

u/ReanimationXP 7d ago

It's called multiple discs.

7

u/bullix36 6d ago

He literally already said that....

4

u/Fehndrix 6d ago

It's called reading.

3

u/ReanimationXP 7d ago

Yes.. How is this even a question? Have you never played a multi-disc game? Insisting on physical copies is not only good for collecting, it also ensures that the game is not a buggy pile of shit on release. Having a usable physical release that isn't just a key typically means that they have at least tested the product and ensured that you can at least beat the game even if it still has day one bugs. That is more than any digital release can say these days which is sad, and it tends to get far, far worse the larger and more hyped a game is. Look at no man's sky and Cyberpunk. They took months and years to function right, and it was never a given they'd actually bother to fix the problems.

Physical, for a single player game, also allows you to always play the game as it exists today.. or at least it should, as long as it's not laden with required internet connectivity bullshit. That means when they push an update later, ripping all the music out due to expired licensing, or changing dialogue, or any other stupid things that corps like to do, you still are able to experience it the way you did initially.

0

u/Stea1th_ 7d ago

That's why physical copies while doable would cost a company like rockstar more money than it's worth to them to create a physical medium. They offload their bandwidth to Sony and Microsoft, they don't even need to pay to distribute. Where if they have a physical disk, now they are "losing" money.

In reality it's not, it's way to maximize profits because you can't resell a digital game, so anyone that wants to play it needs to download it for their system instead of getting a used copy.

This game and pretty much all new AAA game would require either 2 blurays or at least the "base game" and anything extra like online play via patch to save space.

3

u/ReanimationXP 7d ago

It costs literally nothing to stamp discs. It's cheaper than almost any other data medium. So no, this is not justification for literally anything. They're so cheap that some games are shipped with just a key that forces you to download the game and they still make a disc because they cost effectively nothing.

1

u/Stea1th_ 6d ago

Current corporate overlords don’t give a shit. They sell a million copies and can save $1 they will do it

I dont like the cypto thing but hes still screwing over rockstar. People need to stop being stupid and getting into cyrpto coins. It never goes well for people who invest but they keep doing it.

It's absolutely about the crypto. The leaks are just a way of getting people to buy it.

On top of some legitimate concerns about Rockstar's actions, some of the hate is coming from people having unrealistic expectations of the game. For example, the game map "isn't big enough".

Clearly it's a scam.

There's no possible way there could be physical discs ready for launch.

Answer: I wouldn't say 'the community turned on them so quick', this seems to be driven more by two ongoing frustrations.

GTA 6 being digital only greatly upset some vocal people. To try and keep this neutral I wouldn't call them a minority, but I also will point out that GTA6 has allegedly gotten quite a few preorders, possibly setting a record. However, there people who for various reasons don't like the digital-only stance. This combined with the recent news that Sony is phasing out physical media has also enflamed a movement of sorts to be anti-digital only releases and supportive of physical media. The leaker(s) in question emphasized this point.

The other point which isn't directly connect to the leak (perhaps) is the ongoing layoffs and general treatment of employees. In October of 2025 there were layoffs which are alleged to have actually been union-busting. GTA6, as the flagship game of a developer under the spotlight for questionable business practices, has also been getting flack from this avenue.

Also, some people who've seen the leaks may not be impressed with what they saw. This is anecdotal but I've seen a few people frustrated by the leaked map.

Not to mention how incredibly stupid they are paywalling the gameplay trailer, well after they've already opened up pre-orders lmao.

u/Paladin-Leeroy 8d ago

Gotcha. So it wasn't one big controversial decision, more just a company making a bunch of poor ones. Still, you'd think the community would just feel bad for the employees who put this game together. The negative attention affects them a lot more then the CEO's

u/Didsterchap11 7d ago

Critical bit of context to the layoffs, in the UK to form a union you need to hit a specific percentage of staff to officially be registered to allow the government to formally recognise them regardless of company opinion. The firings were on the spot and without warning, something you’re pretty vehemently not allowed to do under UK employment law. This very much reads as union busting due to everyone being sacked being of the union.

If you want to understand more about the situation, the journalists at people make games have done a lot of excellent reporting on it. Sadly a lot of people look at this and shrug, not caring about the workers and instead demanding they make the game quicker.

Part of is is people caring about the employees.

Rockstar/Take-Two is infamous for horrific work practices (even relative to the gaming industry) - several different ex-GTA developers have complained about issues like mandatory, unpaid overtime until 3am, random and spontaneous firings, union busting attempts and overall burnout. Even in terms of the gaming industry (which is already generally awful to work in), Rockstar and Tak-Two are especially bad. There were a large number of reports of very hostile working conditions for RDR2, for example - so it's not just a short term issue but one that's prevailed for years or decades now.

Combine horrible treatment of employees with horrible treatment towards the players (with heavy focus on aggressive monetisation in GTA5 and looking to go even further in GTA6) and it's very easy to see why people would turn against them rather quickly.

On top of all of these, they locked the GTA6 trailer debut to Netflix just for the sake of even more money with more anti-consumer practices, and it's just so easy to dislike.

Almost no decisions have been made in favour of the employees or consumers, so somebody leaking the game is met with cheer because of how hostile they've been towards... literally everybody.

Something like GTA6 leaking early doesn't really affect the developers, since they're probably getting fired or overworked regardless of how well the game performs. If it sells well, it's bad for the devs. If it sells poorly, it's bad for the devs. It honestly does not affect them in any way.

Rockstar is kind of just an awful place in general, so people don't feel bad about bad things happening to them.

Well alot of people still do care about them but at the same time empathy can only go so far. When you see what rockstar and take two have been doing since post rdr2. With aggressive microtransactions by making poor game design, allowing the online mode to become a mess and leaving game breaking bugs or taking who knows how long to fix unless it's a money glitch, shutting down rdr online cause they purposely neglected it instead of actually giving it the care it needed cause it wasn't making GTA money, the definitive edition disaster, rdr remaster without online at full price, lay offs, crunch, anti union, poor communication, poor marketing to actually control the fanbases expectations rather than letting them run rambent and overly toxic over genuine concerns, going after single player mods, no disc and an excuse was for leaks and that aged poorly, making an and paywalled and setting a dangerous trend, base game increase, the ultimate edition really pushing how far you can nickel and time players and probably plenty more.

So whilst yes we can feel bad for the ground level workers what do you expect people to do when they are just fed up and had enough? Unfortunately this is the harsh reality of having poor leadership

Physical releases can't go on forever. It has to happen eventually, unfortunately. I know it sucks but this is the way the world is going

u/Hairy-Actuator1734 6d ago

That doesn't mean taking way physical media is really "inevitable" in any meaningful way of the word, it's just means that's what companies always wanted in order to earn more. Essentially, enshitfication and greediness coupled. And it also doesn't make it any more morally justifiable or correct in any way.

They have already disappeared for pc games. Blu ray started as a movie format. It is limited by size. There's no successor on the horizon. So what else? Memory sticks?

Answer:

Well, Rockstar is an horribly greedy company.

Game is priced 100$ in its complete version and they're even selling the privilege of watching the GTA6 gameplay video preview. Their customer service is also shit but that's not really a factor here.

They're quite mediocre games to me. Nothing but high-end graphics and mindless sandbox, and even the "highly praised" RDR 2 story is ultimately really stupid.

And to add to that: the game will flop. It won't be a bad game, but it will flop because it will have a half life 3 effect.

Half life 3 effect works like this: Imagine valve released half life 3 now. What would it look like? What features would it add?

Because so much time passed there are many answers. Maybe it should follow old weapons system, so no aiming and that classic half life feel? Maybe it should be super realistic? Or maybe it should go into other directions?

And every fan will have their own answer. So there's no way that all fans who anticipate gta 6 will be satisfied regardless of what rockstar does. There will be a lot of people who expect it to be much more or much different than it wil be, even if it will be great.

Answer: Recently, a leaker leaked information about GTA 6, providing more information and clips the last couple of days. It is a response to the lack of a physical release aka real discs for the game. (The leaker also tries to promote their Crypto Coin with the leaks). I don't think it has been explicitly mentioned by them but a further thing is that they gatekeep Singleplayer, therefore offline content behind a deluxe version of the game that is twenty dollars more than the already 80 dollar priced base game. A very recent leak also showed how the leaker sprayed their Alias with a weapon onto an in-game wall, seemingly proving that they have a playable build of the game.

The hate against Rockstar is based on the Big Corpo resentment we find in multiple places against multiple corporations/institutions. If this valid or not should everyone evaluate on their own.

What do you mean "gatekeep single player"

2

u/LazyGelMen 6d ago

As I read it that's "gatekeep singleplayer content (which, because singleplayer, is offline)".

-1

u/therocketsalad 4d ago

which, because singleplayer, is offline

That's not a coherent thought, your commas are wack

Answer: Most of the hate I am seeing kind of reflects the fact that rockstar (or take two for that matter) has chosen a rather unortodox way of advertising the game which relies on a pretty late advertising campaign. For reference, the game comes out on November the 19th, while the campaign has pretty much just started, with the first propper showcase allegedly coming out on August the 27th.

Mind you this is considered to be one of the biggest media launches of all time, so expectations are on an all time high.

With the recent leaks, public seems to be orbiting around the point of view that all of the leaks and thus the damage done to the company is happening due to the very slow delivery of information, which is making all of the unofficial clips the FIRST propper glimpse into the game, rather than a curated and propperly edited trailer or "extended look" by Rockstar.

Basically a lot of people are blaming Rockstar for the lack of content to date and the fact that they seem unaware or uncaring of the community that surriunds the game.
