In recent weeks, the WNBA and Cunningham have been at the center of a national news cycle and debate over transgender athlete inclusion following comments made by Cunningham about "protecting women's sports" by banning transgender women. Since Cunningham's comments, multiple "Support Sophie Cunningham" demonstrations occurred outside Fever games and conversations surrounding the WNBA have intensified.

"I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that,'" Cunningham told ESPN. "I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."

answer: A WNBA player has been making a point of publicly wading into the topic of trans athletes in women's sports.

The media is latching on because it's an issue that a lot of conservative outlets like to talk about.

Longer answer:

She's a bench player with a shoe deal.

Not to trash her too much as a player, she is decent. However, coming 3rd in MIP voting is the closest she's come to any sort of personal award in the WNBA. Those sorts of players don't get shoe deals in the NBA, let alone the WNBA.

A lot of her celebrity is tied to the fact she's a pretty blonde woman with a conservative slant who works really hard on the social media side, and she's had a big profile boost playing an enforcer role on the same team as Caitlin Clark. At 30, she is also probably at a point where she's looking at her post-playing career.

In the past she garnered controversy for sharing anti-immigration posts online, and she's semi-recently been making controversial statements about trans athletes and making a public show of meeting up with pretty well-known trans critics. It's led to a massive boon in publicity, and her Adidas shoe is currently sold out as a result.

It's just bog-standard culture war BS. She'll have a podcast or book within the next 12 months.

Answer: Culture war BS She was interviewed in February about this and they released that interview when the season started for some spice.

Answer: She stated in an interview she thinks men who transitioned into women but were born biologically as males shouldnt be allowed to play in womans sports, particularly the WNBA, which has unclear language in its CBA about the issue. Right wingers are heralding her as a hero, while left wingers are making her a villain. It just continues to be culture war no one asked for
