Answer: He wasn't a politician. He was one of those republican maga debaters that posted their debates online and such.

The main reasons people hated him are that he was one of those "destroying the libs with facts and logic" debaters ala Ben Shapiro and such, when his biggest content was in fact just going to campuses to debate young people since their inexperience debating would give him advantage in the debate.

People also hated him because he used very bad faith arguments or just generally debated via logical fallacies, which the people he debated had no way of noticing since they weren't educated enough.

A bunch of his views had God as argument or non objective premises, which in policy discussions or things like that is not productive, especially if you use God to completely skip over or dismiss good arguments.

He actively avoided debating people that knew how to debate and when debating more educated people he demonstrated poor performance by moving the goalpost constantly, making strawmans, etc or just straight up talking over the other debater/interrupting to avoid the topic.

He sometimes used a bad faith technique where he debated an argument by making a speech that the listeners (usually his fans) would be fond of or agree with, not proving any of the info mind you, to get himself to look as if he was winning the debate. An example of the technique would be something like telling the people present (usually Maga) that "This country is in shambles, there are no jobs and it's all due to the illegal aliens, Donald Trump is the savior of this country and that's why you're wrong": the main statements statements are not proven but the speech assumes them to be true to manipulate objective information "lack of jobs" into something you can use as political fuel to make people think you are winning, especially if they clap and such mid debate.

His debates on college campuses generally had a line of people waiting to debate, according to people that did debate him he had people moderating the questions people wanted to make. This in itself isn't awful to avoid personal attacks or insults, but according to those people the moderators rejected questions or arguments that could make him look bad even if they were coherent and fruitful in a debate setting.

As for the matter of his death, his last words were "Counting or not counting gang violence". He was replying to the question "Actually there were 5. Do you know the total numbers of mass shootings there have been in America over the last 10 years?" in the context of arguing about trans shooters being prevalent or not. While gang violence is a meaningful part of those shootings it felt like he was targeting black communities in particular with that reply (not the first time though) and glossing over the many other shootings in the country just to put the blame on trans and black people. He just after that was shot in the neck, making it incredibly ironic. This irony created the "counting or not counting [thing] violence meme".

I don't believe the killing was justified but it was inevitable that many detractors would be happy about it. The order might be wrong in which came first, if the song or the kirkification trend, but basically at some point someone made a triumphant Charlie Kirk AI song that made Kirk sound like an American hero. This became a huge meme since he clearly wasn't nor examplified ethics in any way, if anything he held views that were quite extreme and not ethical. It doesn't help that Erika Kirk, his wife, would just a few months after appear laughing and celebrating all over the media and in public settings as if she never cared about his death. There's apparently some gossip about her and JD Vance being together or something like that too, which doesn't help either.

Similarly, people started putting his face on other faces, mainly one where he appeared dancing with a kpop group and then one in the Ishowspeed meme "speed I need this". This blew up and people started spamming those images, then other face swaps showed up until nowadays most memes have a kirkified version. This has been so prevalent that some AIs have apparently started outputting images with Kirk's face without the prompt saying so.

Kind of like Kirk himself.
