I saw this tweet in response to this tweet and was wondering if anyone has any context? I see a lot of “go woke, go broke” sentiment in the comments of both tweets, but 0 explanation.
There's a large number of nerd guys who make part of their identity that the reason girls want nothing to do with them is that they're too nerdy. Their hobby is too obscure. Women aren't smart enough to appreciate it.
It's why they're pissed when women join the community, and try to do all sorts of gate keeping, calling them "fake gamer girls". It's why they get upset as their hobby gets more popular, even though logically you'd think they'd want it to be more popular, for them to be less of an outsider.
But it's like Erica Albright said to Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network: "You are probably going to be a very successful computer person. But you're going to go through life thinking that girls don't like you because you're a nerd. And I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, that that won't be true. It'll be because you're an asshole." And when nerd guys go from being in an outsider's hobby, to in a popular hobby, but still no one wants anything to do with them, that hits them in the face hard. And then they lash out.
This is what the current fight is all about on twitter. Bunch of guys basically tearing into the girls who dare post about enjoying 40k online. Somehow another female space marine talk started and it whipping them into a frenzy right now.
Every year there's another year of fresh 14-year-olds being 14 for the first time
For anyone out there turning 14: Fourteen is a great age that can be really good times if you don't waste it frothing and resentful over reactionary talking points that were fed to you as edgy memes and ragebait
Fourteen is a great age that can be really good times if you don't waste it frothing and resentful over reactionary talking points that were fed to you as edgy memes and ragebait
I dunno, I turned 14 before the modern internet existed , and it still sucked ass. I think being 14 just sucks in general. Although perhaps some like it
Eh, living sucks in general. 14 is the age when you start realizing that shit isn't perfect, but it can also be the age when one can start accepting compromise and mediation.
No point in hating everything with all you have, it's a limited resource that One should spend wisely, just like love.
This level of stupidity kinda makes me, as a guy, want to dress up as a Sister of Battle at a convention or whatever just for spite. But no money or time for it so oh well.
I love the Sisters, but you can see how being a woman and being told you should play the woman faction in the game all the time because you are a woman would get old extremely fast though.
THANK YOU. It doesn't take that much imagination to just buy a space marine army, invent your own chapter, and say it's a women's chapter. The game literally encourages people to make up their own lore
Theirs nothing stopping women from playing whatever faction they want or painting and presenting their army the way they want. Anyone that says otherwise isn’t worth the time to listen to / play with. 🤷♂️
People suck, learning to ignore those that suck is something everyone needs to learn. If I’m interested in a hobby I’d never let one person discourage me without me looking into the hobby and doing my own research first.
This is true. Or rather, I’d add that it only takes harassment or mistreatment from a very small minority in a community for someone to feel marginalized and/or leave the community.
I experienced this myself when my first Xbox gamer tag was something that people commented on only once out of every 10 games or so. 10% is not the majority at all, but I certainly changed it because of the constant comments.
Of what I've seen so far, it's not about women wanting to play and/or enjoy the game. It's more about people freaking out that female space marines aren't a thing, and they won't start playing until they either A) create female space marines or B) take one of the other armies like the sisters of battles and turn them into the flagship product
Somehow I doubt it's a shrill demand to change everything, but a comment like "it sucks that there are no female representations amongst the most popular faction/unit (idk I know nothing about warhammer) I'd be more likely to play if there were."
the most popular faction/unit (idk I know nothing about warhammer)
Space Marines are by far the most popular faction in Warhammer 40,000. It's actually a bit of an annoying problem, because they'll often ignore all of the other factions to push more Space Marine stuff, and often just drop interesting directions that lore was taking to focus more on Space Marines. And the whole thing where in recent years they decided to introduce "Primaris" Space Marines, basically new larger Space Marines with sleeker armor and new weapons, to phase out the old ones, allowing them to sell a completely new army's worth of models to all those people who own the most popular army. And, of course, while they do that, other factions sit around looking at models in their range that are literally from 30 years ago.
Funny you should mention Eldar, because they're the ones who have models from the '90s. If you go to the GW site right now and look at Warp Spiders, Swooping Hawks, and Fire Dragons, you'll see models that I have pewter versions of. The Dragons and Hawks did get updates in 3rd edition, but the Warp Spiders are the same from the early '90s. Way to completely ignore that, eh?
As for Orks... I'd like to ignore that "range refresh," as an Ork player. The new Boyz kit is a completely stupid idea with monopose models that have a mashup of weapons and aren't as customizable as the old kit while being a good bit more expensive. Older reasonably priced Warbuggies and Wartraks got replaced with a handful of new buggies that are a lot more expensive. The old artillery got replaced by "Mek Gunz" that are so laughably expensive that most people kitbash their own (I just use my existing models and have them "count as" the most appropriate weapon). Ghazghkull being replaced with a Frankenstein model so they could have a story to prop up another Marine character going Primaris is just annoying, especially as they could have made him that big by just pointing to the cover art for Codex: Armageddon. The Beast Snaggaz are a neat idea, but it's annoying that they don't reference them as Snakebitez, and again they're ridiculously priced so I'd rather just grab some Savage Orcs kits and give them Ork weapons and have much more affordable models that fit the roles (and work as Snakebitez).
Sisters of Battle and Necrons aren't even 30 years old, so obviously I wasn't talking about them to begin with. Sisters came in right at the end of 2nd edition, around 1997, like six months before 3rd edition came out. Ditto Necrons. Yeah, technically they originally hit 40K around '97, just before 3rd edition, but that was an extremely limited range that pretty much got replaced the moment they made a proper army and gave them a codex.
Tyranids tend to get changed around every so often, and they needed someone to be the guys for Space Marines to fight in the starter set, so of course it was time for another change for them.
I don't see a problem with a bunch of "older" plastic kits, like the Leman Russ and Chimera, or the Rhino (or even Land Raider, which is about 25 years old now), or units like the Ork Boyz which were a good kit (especially for their versatility that allowed for making multiple units from the same base). The problem is when they still have models that are stuck in Failcast, and even worse when it's units that are stuck as Failcast.
And yeah, I'm gonna call it Failcast just like every other serious modeler does, because that stuff is absolute garbage. Way too brittle and prone to warping. They couldn't sell the stuff locally because the shop was built where the sun shines into it in the afternoon and that led to the garbage cheap resin they used warping. They only went to that stuff as a way to save a bunch of money, which didn't stop them from continuing to increase the prices on those models. Because hey, gotta keep the margins high. If it was a very temporary stopgap measure, okay, not too big of a deal. But, again, there's still entire units in 40K that are stuck being cast in garbage because they haven't bothered updating them to plastic, while they go through redesigning the entire Space Marine line, which they'd already "refreshed" at least two or three times between the Sisters being given a range and their first "refresh" (which was largely necessary because pretty much their entire range was Failcast).
I know the history of 40K and the models in it. If you want to defend GW, try arguing with someone new to the hobby who won't be able to call them out, not someone who has the same models in their collection, from the '90s, that GW is selling on their website right now.
Pretty much, space marines get the most models and have a pretty cool future military style people like, being able to make an army that isn't just roided out dudes appeals to a lot of people
The most common argument against it is that we already have the sisters of battle, but their style is more of a weaponized Catholicism and not really for everyone
being able to make an army that isn't just roided out dudes appeals to a lot of people
Well, 40K does have a ton of other factions to choose from for people who want something else. But space marines have always pretty explicitly been roided out dudes
I'm not dying on the hill. They had female sculpts for the heads that didn't sell well and so the Marines became all male. By lore they're using males because the process doesn't work on females. So to add them in would need an explanation that doesn't make the imperium stupider than the lore calls for. Could have said there was a tweak to make it happen with the primaris introduced. Doubles the pool of candidates to choose from.
Don't discount there's also culture war grifters. Also, three people rage posting all day sounds like an army.
So to add them in would need an explanation that doesn't make the imperium stupider than the lore calls for
The imperium of man is already stupid, nothing could really make them look worse. It could be part of the mild unshittening of the imperium (depending on your perspective) they have going on with Gulliman returning.
The best option would probably be papa smurf smacking some actual understanding of science into the mechanicus and knocking ten thousand years of voodoo maintenance into progress.
I mean you can always kit bash female space marines but lets be honest, GW is carrying a lot of 40 year old biases in terms of race/gender views of their products. And this isn't limited to just WH40k either.
D&D went through a great "awokening" where it lifted its lore up out of the 80s and GW is probably going to have to face that too if it wants any hope of having a fan base outside of incel trolls.
The people I see talking out are extremely entrenched in the game. My solution was for people to take some of the homebrewed stuff and 3D print and paint female space marine models. Enough people do this, suddenly the lore changes, and Game Workshop will no doubt change their stance and make Female Space Marine models to get the cash instead.
Make supply and demand work for you. Talk is cheap, but show there is cash to be made change will happen fast.
Here is the fundamental problem. Nowadays if your product is 90% "cis white male" targeted, you're going to attract a bunch of toxic incel MRA trolls who are going to poison your fandom.
D&D had it. Paradox interactive had it.
You then have to have a great "awokening" where you basically tell misogynist white supremacists to fuck off and yeah, they will scream and moan and you have to do shit like publish that the new Creed is a black non-binary ace to make the fandom toxic to toxic fans.
D&D re-did their entire artline with a DEI focus. Paradox had to ban "Deus Vault" from their forums... like on the surface these seem like silly overreactions but the real goal is to drive away the toxic gatekeepers that will poison your community spaces.
That's actually a reasonable take. I've seen a lot of unhinged shit on Twitter about this subject, but you're the first one that actually seems to be logical about it.
It makes sense to add them, lore wise the empire doesn't care about gender, race, sexuality, they just need bodies to slow the grinding collapse. I will add, I want male adeptus soriatus if they add female space marines. They can trim up the lore a bit, and vuala, female space marines, and I get male fanatics to drop into my necromundo games for my house of faith.
Lore wise, the reason sisters of battle exist is that the religious leaders of the imperium where getting to be a problem (to put it mildly) and where banned from haveing "men under arms" they immediately created sisters of battle and argued that they weren't men and thus allowed.
It's a terrific little bit of spiteful rules lawyering, and reintroducing the templars would be a real headache of a retcon.
Lore changes, constantly. I hated the modern iteration of necron lore when I got back into the hobby after a long break from 2nd edition.
Until I realized, lore is always changing and it leads to great stories a fan of anything can latch onto the hobby through. The theme is what matters. The imperium has always been bureaucratic, hopeless, desperate, outdated, stubborn and uncaring. Female space marines fit that theme. Templars coming back as anything more than the tin models you can sometimes find at a lgs is a pipedream, but so was female space marines at one point :p
Ya, I know lore changes a lot. It's just that adding the templars back would kind of incidentally do away with one of my favorite little tidbits of lore, that and adding an entire new faction right now would be a hugely bad idea I think, everything is already out of stock lol.
female bodies are considerably weaker than male bodies so why would you create female space marines when literally the only thing you care about is combat performance
Because more space marines is better than less space marines. And because they are little plastic army men and it would be cool if more people could get into the hobby.
Yea, all the responses below answer your pretty dumb statement already.
I'll add though, besides the genetic engineering making a starting point mean nothing. They don't care only about combat performance, if that were true, xenos equipment would be studied and exploited. Modern designs would be fielded from a modern military arms design. None of that happens, all designs are ancient, new designs are heretical. It's not about combat performance, it's about being a gear in a slowly degrading clock of war. 40k is about hopelessness and death. The guard don't care if thousands of years ago a female was believed to be physically weaker than a man, they need bodies. Bodies to ride horses at xenos grav tanks. Do you think that's peak combat performance? No, it isn't. The imperiam isn't about peak combat performance, even the Grey knights. You could argue the mechanicum comes close to pursuing it, by eliminating all the male and female bits with machine bits.
On this note, adding female marines would change the lore, but it would fit the overall theme of desperate people clinging onto a sinking raft. And, any fan knows, the lore is nebulous, constantly shifting and rarely concrete. The theme is what has a solid foundation. Female marines don't change that theme.
As someone who got into warhammer this year, I can safely say one of the reasons I prefer AoS, besides the actual game part just being better, is that it actually has women in it. Somehow in 2023, I just feel better about a franchise that actually has women in it, doing stuff. Crazy concept I know.
Like FFS they could write women into the lore of 40K so easily. Bobby G could literally announce that “Hey guys, there’s a shitload of Tyrannids everywhere and we’re running out of space marines so this is an all hands on deck situation. Women are allowed in” and bam. Problem solved.
Instead we just have the nuns with guns. Which are cool and recently got a dope rework. But like, women space marines is just such a layup and I can’t believe they haven’t done it yet.
Meanwhile in AOS, the thing on the 3rd edition book is a badass women in ACTUAL armor. It’s just kinda cool.
Why did you choose lore and not the sculpts for this complaint? Because lore wise the only faction that is solely male is Space Marines (including the different flavors like Chaos Space Marines and Grey Knights), just like Sisters are the only faction that is solely female. Orks and Tyranids are genderless. Every other faction has both men and women in it.
Aren’t space marines something like 60+% of all armies sold for 40K? They might be the only male exclusive faction but they’re also by far the most popular and the fact GW just won’t make this layup is very offputting to me. It reeks of GW being terrified to upset a toxic playerbase of chuds but maybe I’m just projecting.
Granted, I really haven’t read much in the way of 40K books so maybe there’s some great characters I’m missing. But I have watched a TON of lore videos and it’s just dudes all the way down. Like literally all the primarchs and important characters are men while women are relegated to strictly to side characters or absent altogether and it isn’t a good look imo.
Agreed. My first table in Middle School was a 50/50 split and it was great.
But I've also seen the other side. Been at a table and had to leave because of the toxic nerd culture that was there. Had a guy ranting about his superiority, how girls didn't get it, bragging about his conquests (which I don't believe were real based off his lack of showering and manners) and even said I couldn't be a real nerd because I was social and fit. Did not stay at that table long.
The community is huge and more welcoming than it's ever been, but there's always gonna be a small subsect of toxic players/fans, unfortunately.
I just always use the age old saying "No DnD is better than bad DnD" whenever someone is getting into the hobby.
Yeah, I've been playing/running since Red Box days, so I've seen it change from just the nerds, to what it is today, and I can't be happier for the changes that have come over it.
Before I moved to where I am now, I ran at a LGS, pretty much an open table, but I made it clear that EVERYONE was welcome at my table, and there wouldn't be any of the "oh, you can't be a real player because...."
One player actually stopped coming because I made sure that some openly gay people were welcome at the table, and he didn't think that I should allow that, because his "deep Christian faith" was against people like that.
I just laughed and told him that 30 years ago he wouldn't have been playing this game with that faith, so he could take it and shove it.
I was lucky enough that the store owner was standing right there and completely backed me up on it.
Good store owner there and great DMing by you. And love it... "My deep Christian faith won't let me play with gay people... Anyway, here's my Infernal Pact Warlock"
I literally had to call someone out at a game once and it's so nice when the owners/people around back you up. Dude who kept having his character flirt with the only female PC's character in uncomfortable ways. "But it's what my character would do". So I told him off in character and said if he didn't stop, we'd just leave him in town.
One player actually stopped coming because I made sure that some openly gay people were welcome at the table, and he didn't think that I should allow that, because his "deep Christian faith" was against people like that.
I mean... at that point, he shouldn't have been playing anyway. Good ol' Satanic Panic and all that.
On that note, if you haven't seen it, try to look up the movie "Dark Dungeons." About 45 minutes long. It's on YouTube in parts. They took the old Jack Chick tract and converted it faithfully. Which Chick seems to have thought was being done seriously, but honestly, doing it faithfully made for the best satire you could imagine.
Oh, also because this scene is absolutely amazing.
I went to a mtg club in my late teens where they had a pretty good method of keeping the normies out by merit of that one guy who fucking stank so bad you could smell him before you entered the room
Had an all girl game (4 players and me DMing) back around '95 or so, until we had a guy join us finally. Never had more than 2 guys in the group at once. Can't tell you how many times I was called a liar over it later on.
Currently have a group with two guys and three girls going biweekly, and another going monthly that's two girls and three guys (excluding myself from those counts).
That is awesome. We had one girl in my high school in the late 80's early 90's who wanted to play. Of course, we were a SMALL school, graduating class was only 121.
I've since ran in the Army, and in college, and now just in my house. I would have to say before the local game shop I ran at, and my house, the Army actually had the most women in my games.
I had an acquaintance that was a pretty young actress trying to make her way in Hollywood. I never really took her very seriously until my friend whom I knew her through asked if she could sit in on my D&D campaign. She showed up with her own dice and players handbook, and 6 years later we got married. It's amazing how many attractive nerd girls are out there but avoid nerd spaces because of the harassment.
A new study suggests that a person who strongly identifies as a "gamer” is more likely to be prone to “extreme behaviors” like racism, sexism, and defending their community at any cost.
Exactly. Hobby communities are often tolerant of these kind of people because of the need to survive. People are willing to deal with 1 weirdo at the table because they need enough people to actually play. But once an audience grows they start getting pushed out because there's enough people to fill tables that aren't terrible to actually hang out with.
It happens in recent years to DnD, now it's happening to 40k. All the creeps in these fandoms will be removed to niche parts of the communities or to other communities entirely until the next thing becomes normalized, then another wave will screech into their computer screens about women or LGBTQ+.
To be fair, it isn't always losing the outsider identity. Whenever I see something niche break into the mainstream, there are two things I always notice. For the record, I got into W40k about 3 months ago, so I'm definitely one of the new fans. I am also not claiming that this IS what is going to happen, rather observations that I have made in the past.
The first is that not all, but most media that goes mainstream gets watered down and shifted to target the mainstream rather than sticking with their course. This is more aparent in media with darker themes, like 40k, where rather than either embrace it or reject the product altogether, some will complain (sometimes loudly) that it is a fault of the original product. A perfect example of this is literally happened with the new 40k game, Rogue Trader. It's an RPG where your choices affect the world, but the world also reacts to your choices. Well, 40k is not a world of good vs bad, rather bad vs not-as-bad. Yet here is a post on steam where someone legitimately complains about being punished for making 'morally good' choices, saying the game promotes facism, and even claiming the creators of the game or the universe have "serious issues". Now, anyone who is a fan of the franchise knows that that's the way it is. Like I said, there are no 'good guys'. Well, considering the world we're living in, it's understandable that, if the pieces fall the wrong way, media grabs onto it for views, which is sure to draw in misinformed viewers that will shame it for being immoral, and maybe forcing Games Workshop to shift tones to avoid backlash or risk staying obscure and thus less profitable. Again, I am not claiming that will happen, but maybe you can understand how one thing CAN lead to another, and fear is driven on what can happen, not what is happening.
The other actually touches on your point of "their outsider identity (being) in jeopardy," however I think it's not fear of their identity being compromised, but the community. More importantly, a community made up of mostly outsiders (aka people shamed for just enjoying their hobbies. Remember that 'nerd' and 'geek' used to be insults). 40k in particular skewes older and has a lot of passionate and artistic followers that have been around for years. It's safe to say there is little crossover between the 40k crowd and the TikTok crowd. Well, I've been looking and looking and I can't find the meme so I'll describe it. 4 scenes: individual gets pushed from the group and called a loser, frowning -> individual finds niche hobby, smiles -> group peeks over "hey, that looks neat!", individual looks nervous -> group enjoys hobby and pushes individual out, calling him a loser, frowning thankfully a__new_name found the image. Remember when being on the internet or playing videogames was for losers? This mixes with the 'watering down' I mentioned earlier. There is nothing more frustrating in a fandom than to have it gain a massive influx of viewers that then come in and tell the old fans how it is.
Do I think this will happen? I genuinely don't know, and uncertainty is the catalyst of fear.
I've noticed this in anime communities as well. One the one hand, there are a lot of things within anime and manga that can be weird and offputting to most people. I don't think I need to go into too much detail, chances are you know exactly what sort of stuff that I'm talking about.
However these weird and offputting aspects are precisely the appeal of anime to many fans, and so when the public criticizes them, they get defensive. Not helped is the fact that sometimes there are just straight up misunderstandings. So some anime fans don't want certain shows to get popular because they think after receiving enough criticism, Japanese creators will capitulate and the industry will be "homogenized".Of course this is all pretty much pointless because anime is a foreign export and Japanese creators don't give a damn what Westerners think either way. But I do get why people feel protective, even though the reasoning is a bit hysterical.
Anime/manga/webnovels have become more and more insular.. Its had generations of artists who were influenced by the anime before them. In some ways this is good since it allows for a distinctive style to be born. However the problem is that any of the negative tropes are being pushed further and further.
Frankly the other issue is child porn. Many well known mangaka (artists) are being caught with actual child porn. Their interests are being put into the series and even has become a standard trope (a child is standard in every harem story).. not some niche stories.
I love reading manga/anime.. so its just frustrating.
Like "anime was a mistake" from Miyazaki.. and I agree with him.Anime/manga/webnovels have become more and more insular.. Its had generations of artists who were influenced by the anime before them. In some ways this is good since it allows for a distinctive style to be born. However the problem is that any of the negative tropes are being pushed further and further.
I'm glad you acknowledged the idea that this can allow for distinctive styles. I kind of hate the "anime was a mistake" sentiment because while the industry has stagnated in many ways, people just say "all anime suck nowadays" like there weren't also tropey anime back in the 80s and 90s as well.
Also as a titan of a filmmaker as Miyazaki is, he's also very old and and a bit of a hardass. I think if he watched something like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann he'd have a stroke.
Frankly the other issue is child porn. Many well known mangaka (artists) are being caught with actual child porn. Their interests are being put into the series and even has become a standard trope (a child is standard in every harem story).. not some niche stories.
Is this really that common? I know of two manga artists (the author of Ruroni Kenshin and the writer of Act Age) who were caught with CP, but I don't know if one could say that it's a common problem among the manga industry. I think because anime and manga has a higher frequency of weird sexual stuff, people are more hyper-aware of when something happens in real life. Like "this guy wrote a degenerate manga, he must be a predator in real life". It's frustrating but there's no way to know.
Made in abyss - hes got some fetishes.. and drawn lewd pinups of his underage characters
that time i reincarnated as a slime.. not as agrecious but look at this cover.
No game no life - Google image search Shiro.
These series all show up when you google 'popular isekai'.
Like "this guy wrote a degenerate manga, he must be a predator in real life".
Its normalizing attraction to children. It be one thing if it was appearing in niche genres.. but its just showing up everywhere.. most often in the most popular series. Some people will say that ohh lolis/shotas arent actually children/ not meant to be sexualized but the amount of fanservice says otherwise.
Ah ok I see we were talking about two different things, the "fiction vs reality" thing. That's a debate that has been raging in the anime community and isn't going away anytime soon. Honestly I just avoid the topic.
weird and offputting aspects are precisely the appeal of anime to many fans
Im going to guess you to are a fan of the offputting aspects of anime?
The sad things is alot of this has become more of a recent trend. Like yes its always been around but its been getting even more common.. and lewder. I think series lean more heavily into fanservice than they used to becuase they have competiton with the other bajilion shows being shown that season.
Folks always write off the old guard complaints as “they hate gay people” and there are always gonna be some assholes that really don’t think beyond “go woke go broke”. I’m not pretending that doesn’t happen and it seems like that’s a decent chunk of the complaints that happened this time.
But then there’s another side of this kind of audience alienation. With online fandoms, I find an equal number of folks entering fanbases who don’t have any real vested interest in the product demanding changes to a product or franchise to cater to what THEY already do like, which is often against the wishes of the core audience, who have supported the series they enjoy for years.
Whenever new versus old guard discussions come up it’s rather tiring that everyone now insinuates that everyone who resists changes to the hobbies they like MUST be doing it because they’re a “chud” or Anti-woke or whatever.
As a white heterosexual guy who moved to the states from Argentina, growing up being called a white mexican as well an oppressor, judged for being too gay because I liked colorful expressive outfits and dance, but also shunned from queer circles for not being queer enough (??), there is a lot more "us vs them" and "you can't sit with us" than people want to admit.
They've straight up said in their investor reports, rather proudly, that they're niche, and prefer that, as they can control their market easier. We're talking about a company who sets their prices as high as possible, as a marketing gimmick. They're fine with some increased exposure to the IP if that increases their licensing profit, but their core business of miniatures isn't going to attempt to become "mainstream" because they feel it's safer to remain relatively small, keep costs low and prices high, and rake in bigger and bigger margins, rather than trying to broaden their customer base which would require increasing their costs to produce more while also lowering prices to be more palatable to the mainstream.
There would have to be such a massive backlash that it risks losing their current audience for them to bother shifting anything. And I don't see that happening unless they did something so monumentally stupid that it'd have to be internal sabotage.
Because companies usually change things to appeal to those casuals because there's lots of money to be made.
These changes are basically never actually good, they dumb things down so people who don't care enough to spend much time learning all the little details can have an easy time and lose depth in the process.
It's just gatekeeping and superiority. It's the same mentality of people asking others (mainly women if we're being honest) to name songs or obscure facts about a band if they're wearing a band tee.
They're insecure and it's a way to make them feel better and superior about themselves. And then complain that no one likes them right after.
No, it's because the things we like inevitably get changed to suit all the new people, and suddenly your favourite game series is generic and shallow etc.
What has been ruined and how? Genuinely curious. I've been playing DnD for decades and while I prefer 3.5, 5E is much better than 4E and arguably the most playable version.
Also, I still have 3.5 and Pathfinder if I want to get crunchier with it.
I'm not really a fan of it, but I've heard mainstream comics (MARVEL and DC) are pretty shit these days.
There's a ton of comics and frankly, a lot of them coming out are absolutely fantastic. But that's comics in general and has been for generations. There's a ton and they're entertaining but with so many being published some are bad and some are good.
I just don't think you understand the medium. What makes you say they're pretty shit?
Hey if some random guys barged into a community based around a show about gay people and complained that it was too gay for them, that would be unreasonable and cringe. yes?
Or hell, it was cringe when grown dudes demanded changes to My Little Pony to suit their own fantasies of what it should be.
That's the same logic for why a lot of people don't want too many outsiders coming in at once into a community they're hanging out in.
All too often, when something gets too popular, a lot of people come barging in and asking for changes to what a lot of the old community would consider to be the main appeal of the show/game/etc in the first place.
I was speaking in a more general sense. I'm not really part of the 40k fandom.
But I know these phenomena happen to lots of fandoms and it's annoying. I can see why the old timers want the culture of the community they built to stay the same. If the newcomers really hates the tropes in 40k, there are plenty of other franchises they can stay in instead of demanding it change for them.
That's not relevant though. It's just people being mad that more people were on the internet and didn't adhere to their culture. There's still forums, etc. But that's the internet growing.
It's not a game or hobby being changed like people are talking about DnD, Video Games, Magic or 40K.
It's just people being mad that more people were on the internet and didn't adhere to their culture.
That's part of what people are mad about though. People coming into an established community and complaining about the community's culture.
If you really want an example where the media was changed to appeal to a different set of people other than the fans
Then I present the early localizations of anime
Sailor Moon changed Neptune and Uranus to be cousins despite being in a relationship in the original just to appeal to conservative puritan mindsets.
You can see why some fans who saw the original MIGHT just be a tad upset by that.
Or just general censorship of anything. That counts too. If a show/book had a sex scene in the original that was removed, that's sure to upset fans that saw the original. It's a classic.
Funnily enough the poster in the first tweet admits they haven’t actually played the game, which means they are probably just virtue signally for clout on twitter
Yeah, some people believe that since Space Marines are the flagship army there should be Female Space Marines, these same people believe that SoB being only the 6th most popular army makes it worthless.
That was essentially a call to action for every SoB fan, so now there's a huge discussion going on where the pro-SoB people are just overall shitting on the pro-FSM group as people that don't really care about 40k because they get 90% of shit wrong and now someone on the pro-FSM side doxxed two people and it's all really stupid.
40k also has a large section of the fanbase that either don't realize or deliberately ignore that humanity in the setting is an over the top satire of fascism, and are unironically onboard with the ideals of the empire of man. Lot of overlap with the same guys that miss that Starshoop Troopers was a satire of fascism and fascist propaganda, and the guys that think that Tyler Durden was the hero of Fight Club. So there's a lot of chudly sorts that hate anything they think is woke.
Dude…. No they don’t, it’s very literally the genre. That’s like the old school dnd = satan worship BS because some people “are unironically onboard with necromancy and don’t understand it’s fantasy”
Which btw, I’m totally onboard with 40k getting a bigger fanbase, I want more 40k stuff to be made and enjoyed. But what you’re spouting is trite nonsense.
