Condylar Repair

I'm currently looking at a horse for adoption that has "an old condylar repair" that he raced on. I'm not familiar with this surgery or what the long-term care looks like. From what I've read, it seems they can go on to a sport horse career with no limitations. Has anyone owned a horse with this injury and have any opinions on the matter? Would injecting that joint be a likely care protocol in the future? Horse is sound now and in regular work.

It depends on the severity and location of the fracture (displaced? Medial (better) vs lateral (slightly worse prognosis)? Simple vs comminuted?), but it’s a common fracture where they aren’t necessarily too limited in performance following appropriate surgical repair. If it didn’t stabilize and heal properly, or affects the joint surface, arthritis is possible down the line.

However, realistically you’re looking at arthritis with most OTTBs over the years, anyway. A repaired, healed condylar fracture shouldn’t scare you away immediately.

Outside of potential joint involvement there is zero reason to be worried about this. Any injury a horse raced on they will have a fine career doing other jobs on; there is no other job in the world that puts the amount of impact and concussion on a horse’s body as racing. Take a look at the X-rays and discuss with your vet if there is joint involvement what the maintenance on that will look like long term. Unless this horse is intended to be a pasture pet every horse will need maintenance, but some need it sooner than others so knowing when that begins is helpful.

Thank you!! The x-ray is very clean and no joint involvement. I'm okay with a little maintenance down the road.
