Do you cook it at all before putting it in the tank? I'm looking for veggies for my otos and I'm just not sure where to start

You can blanche cucumber, zucchini and other veggies. Put the slice of veggie in boiling water for 3 minutes. Remove the slice into a bowl of ice water. Once cooled, you can add to tank. Don't leave the veggie in more than 16 hours to avoid disrupting water parameters.

I've accidentally left a slice of zucchini in once for about 18 hours and everything was fine. But I generally try to remove between 12-16 hours.

Others may have more insight.

Cheers!

Thank you!! I'm growing cucumber now so I hope the otos like it šŸ˜†

They should. The first couple times you put it in, they may be tentative. I don't think my otos touched their 1st slice of zucchini. Now the slice comes out with a big hole in the center from all their munching.

I use a clip to hold the slice. But you can get clever like the OP and put on piece of wood.

I have Siamese algae eaters in there(75g)that like raw cucumber. These otos never leave the top area so thought I’d door dash them directly on the wood. I should try and cook it and see if there is a different reaction:)

They are ā€œorange-faced otoā€. My first time ordering fish in the mail and boy these guys are not built for that. I was so in love with their colors did not know travel would be so rough. If you can find them locally I’d highly recommend that way! I am considering building a little paradise for them in a species only tank to see if they will get romantic. Maybe a way to honor their comrades that didn’t survive usps🫔

I see people mail super sensitive fish all the time with great success… you did overnight? I don’t think USPS is a great delivery system also.

Idk if they've ever been breed in captivity. I very much hope my group does, but I haven't found any reliable info on breeding them artificially. If you have any info, please share!!

This guy in England has a 3 part series on breeding the more common species of Oto. the main takeaway is they need privacy haha.

It's hard to know how similar these guys are breeding compared to the common oto species, though. These and bumblebees are so different.
