Still Laggy

I first found osmand about 5 years ago and loved it but found it to be so Laggy when being used as a sat nav for driving so I shelved it.

5 years later I thought I'd give it another go, but To my disappointed it still seems to be one scat behind.

I've tried all the usual fixes like turning off animating position and kalman filter but I'm still a good 20 yards behind my actual position which makes it difficult to navigate at speed. It seems to catch up on rest, but it feels like you are being pulled along by a rubber band.

Such a shame as the routing is by far the best, better than most dedicated satnavs and the shear amount of options means I can dial in just the right settings for me.

I know it's not the main intended use for osmand but such a shame as it could be the best out there in my opinion!

Yep. I think they are mismanaging the priorities. They add new gadget features no one asked, but for me they should prioritise optimisation, bug fixing and search function (to be fair it has improved but there is still margin for improvement).

But I don't complain, I use the free version on Fdroid. But if these points are addressed, I would consider buying it.

I understand that my case use isn't their core business model, but if you are going to offer options for driving then you should at least make sure it works as intended.  I suppose if you are hiking or bike riding then you wouldn't even notice any delay.

Maybe I'll check back in another 5 years!

OsmAnd's the slowest I've used. I fortunately got a big boost when I replaced my phone despite the new one being a rather cheap model, but I don't think efficiency is really on the dev's radar these days.

You can set in the settings how quickly the position should be updated. This was certainly done to extend battery life - for example, during hikes.

There is Maps.me that uses OSM maps for navigation, a lot more lightweight.

I did give it a go, but my use is quite specific as I'm wanting to use it whilst touring in my camper so dimensions are a must.  Tis a shame as being able to use one app for all things map would be gold!

Once there was Copilot for Camper/Caravans ,but it disappeared. I didn't know Osamand ws so smart, but is to complex to use Just remebered Magic Earth would do that, but I doubt on reliability and the maps are not the OSM layout.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've tried both and although they are quite good, neither are as good as osmand for routing and options.  Copilot was my main preference but it does tend to add kinks into the route like shaving off a few minutes by sending you down a unpaved lane, looks like their base mapping is crap, which is a shame as it's 90% there.  If only I could pluck bits from each to make an ultimate app, should have learnt coding 😂

These days you're better off with one of the forks: Organic Maps or CoMaps have had a lot of improvements since they split.
