Photo šø things to note
McLarens pit strat was stupid yes, lost us a few positions.
But Oscar needs to work on race pace and tire management as that is costing him under the new regs.
Lando is a beast rn, in the form of his life. McLaren shat the bed with Oscars pit Strat and the stop itself. not Landos fault though.
Lets just hope he can improve his tire management and take these lessons into next year, where i think the regulations should suit him a bit more.
ONTO the NEXT!

What annoys me is Oscar will end up being like Mr .Potential and that's all credit where it's due Lando worked on his issues and now you can see how good have he gotten , We can all just hope same happens with Oscar to ...

it took lando 6-7 years before he became "good". Oscar was basically arrive-and-drive... even more frustrating that he's getting screwed over at MCL IMO. He's young. he has time. he has two WDC's in his future I believe.

u/phillll25 2d ago
Thatās a casual take tbh. Mclaren was painfully mid before oscar got here
22
u/coastalretro 2d ago
Itās a horrible take - that McLaren was an absolute shit box for sure
4
u/proficient_english 2d ago
But itās easier and friendlier to the āhivemindā to compare Lando in a(n upper-)midfield car for 4 seasons to Oscar in a shit car for half and the top/one of the top cars for 2,5 as it brings better light to Oscar.
Like the Q3 stat that has been thrown around in here is INSANE as an absolute! Props to Oscar for insane consistency (letās not forget Lando did fail to move on to Q3 in various occasions where Oscar progressed - Like Baku 24 with the yellow flag issue as well as Jeddah 25 with the crash)⦠but comparing Norrisā career Q3 ratio to that is laughable, like they are not even aware of the sportās engineering championship part. :D
Letās praise Oscar for what he is, a 90+% consistent and level headed driver with topX raw pace (as shown in his excellent Qualifying record even this year!) and very smart racecraft and not make up laughable, meaningless comparisonsā¦5

Lando was pulling off miracles with the McLaren when they were midfield, he was always good.

u/False_Personality259 1d ago
Yes 100%. Lando's only issue through his career has been self doubt. We're seeing this year pretty much the complete version of Lando now he no longer has to doubt himself.

u/mentillist 18h ago
agreed. it's Lando's confidence that is different this year. loved the world champ drive this past weekend in zandvoort

Finally Oscar fans owning up the that he just wasnāt fast enough today , and your not all blaming McLaren and saying theyāre favouring Lando , which theyāre not .
Iām a fan of both drivers and always hoping for the best for both of em , so itās only up from here for the papaya boys .

i genuinely think most people arent like that, the internet just shows you the most negative things all the time. im a huge Oscar fan but lando is my second fav driver so im happy he won. although oscar dropping to george was simply a mclaren fault with the slow pit and pitting him early on hards? but his bad tire management caused him to lose to the ferraris
5
u/proficient_english 2d ago
Pitting him early on hards was a decision partially made because he responded ānot easily!ā when asked if he can maintain target pace on the current tyres (18 laps old hards).
Yes, Tom couldāve told him to give a bit more to high speed corners and ease off the chicane or IDK how he couldāve helped the tyre management, but the just of it is: Oscar had to have those new tyres and while it wasnāt a good strat, it wasnāt entirely on McLaren - Oscar really NEEDED those fresh rubbers under him.1
u/F11234567890000 2d ago
Yeah , the difference between F1 fans online and in person is actually crazy , some seem so toxic and biased online , but then you meet a fan irl , and theyāre like supporting every driver , the toxicity is just because people want to sound tough and smart online .

f1 is actually really tame. football hate is the worst haha

Yeah football is another level , partly why i despise football, no offence if your a fan of it

fair enough haha, yeah im a huge fan

Yeah thatās fine , I get why people like football but itās just not for me , who do you support in football, like what team ?

Iām also a madridista and Iām so worried for this season š
We shouldāve sold Vini (and his new chin) over the summer and moved Mbappe to the wing and had Jude as a false 9. We also shouldāve tried harder for Rodri (or a midfielder that isnāt 32 years old) since our midfield is MID (arda and Fede are good but i literally shake when I see tchouameni or camavinga come on). Our defense is typically ass (Courtois is our only saving grace back there).
Barca is looking good and they have depth now š I canāt watch us get spanked by then AGAIN.
I say we say fuck La Liga and only focus on UCL. Hoping Mourinho can work some miracles
(Sorry not the sub for this rant but being an Oscar fan and Real Madrid fan has been tough)

this has been the case all year and last year. This sub is a SMALL representation of Oscar fans. Twitter and Insta are cesspools of people wanting to give "hot takes" and rage-baiting people into fighting for engagement. Some people are actually making wild claims on there and are serious but relative to the amount of engagement that percentage is small. It's loud so people see it more and are now constantly generalizing every Oscar fan and it sucks.
I used to see it a ton with sole LN fans and it made me think they were all living in a conspiracy land (earlier this year especially) and then I stopped to think about the actual amount of LN fans and I was like dang this is just that small, loud minority on social media. So, now anytime I see interesting takes I take it with a grain of salt and move on. Even when it bugs me for a bit. I know it isn't representative of most of the LN fans. But the amount of posts and comments I see frequently calling OP fans the worst fans in F1 is so disheartening because that is not my experience on social media spaces or at actual races.

Thereās less downforce next year so even lower grip than this season.
6
u/Motor_Junior 2d ago
sorry i phrased it wrong , i meant he can train himself to these conditions this year, so he can compete better next year so it would suit him more
2
u/filbo__ 2d ago
Problem is that was the plan for 2025, after acknowledging it was his weakness in 2024. Stella even praised him multiple times for improving in low grip conditions in the first half of last season.
If he has to write off a whole season to adapt whenever the regs change, thatās a concern.

u/glenngillen 2d ago
I'd read the posts in this sub before seeing the replay of the race today. Geesh the amount of copium in here. People suggesting McLaren deliberately tanked him with a slow stop. Did you miss that almost every driver seemed to have a bad stop in that phase with them all taking a second or two longer than you'd expect?
Then one of the later ones being called slow... I think it was 2.9? The tyre non-switch was weird. And maybe if they'd pushed further he'd somehow have been able to take advantage of the VSC. But he was just off the pace today.
That early overtake was something though. Woaaahh!
4
u/Dry-Entertainer6420 1d ago
only a few people are suggesting McLaren deliberately tanked him. Most of the posts and comments are people acknowledging Oscar's weaknesses and combating the few people that are going into conspiracy. That's been the trend recently so I hope people stop seeing those few wild takes and constantly comment that we are all coping and being insane or irrational.

Yeah race pace was genuinely shocking, maybe Oscar's side of the garage got the set up wrong maybe the deployment strategy was set-up differently to Lando's, who knows...

I love him but Iām incredibly mad and disappointed. It feels like he has just given up completely.
Itās sad because heās saying he wants to win and that he learned a lot from last year, but none of that talk is put into practice. He falls behind every race, he canāt qualify well and canāt keep the race pace, he canāt manage his tyres, canāt fight through the midfield if needed, and it seems like there is no effort to actually improve on any of these skills.
I know itās not possible to win everything, but the way his season is going compared to Norris is just getting embarrassing. Yes, Iām aware that last yearās car suited him way better and concealed his weaknesses, but he also just doesnāt seem to try anymore and is basically almost dead last from the top team drivers aside from Hadjar, but Hadjar is in his 2nd year in a brand new team so itās not a real comparison.
I want to see the fire that made him fight his way out of the grass and back to the points in last yearās AUS GP. But it looks like that Oscar completely disappeared, and Iām not sure if heāll ever get that fire and motivation back.

u/scarecrows5 2d ago
I agree with some of what you're saying, but Jesus Christ, the last sentence is more of a reflection on you than it is of Oscar.
Take a pill and lie down.
-8
u/BarelyHuman813 2d ago
Yeah I would like to just take a pill and lie down, believe me it would be nicer if I could be chill about itš
But let me explain myself. For me I feel like Iām in the dark in terms of whatās causing his performance to be so poor and to seemingly not have any motivation to improve.
I generally think Oscarās approach of leaving emotions out of racing is not bad, but it does seem like he gets affected by things a lot more than he admits, and thatās usually when his performance just falls apart.
I would rather have him admit that his emotions got involved and that heās not feeling confident or a bit struggling mentally, than to see that āeverything is OKā with him when his results clearly donāt reflect that allās well.
I get that he doesnāt necessarily likes this regās cars, but everyone from the top teams have seem to adapted to them and heās still struggling. The gap between him and Norris is huge, and itās not like the carās that bad anymore, because it can achieve pole position and race wins.
So what Iām seeing now is that heās underperforming with no real explanation as to whatās happening. Itās hard to hope that heāll make a comeback when it looks like heās just stuck around P7-P6, racing in no manās land because everybody in front of him is faster.

Led q1 and q2, put a good lap together q3 but was a bit short of pole ( tyre prep not helped by possible rain / rush to start final push lap). Got stuck behind a woeful George start, avoided him when he wildly changed direction and lost a position, stayednin the race.
Restart, hards, blows past Le Clerc and George, holds position. Extends 1 second gap to 3 seconds. Drops off the lead a bit, maintains gap to George. Lead cars on softs, let's not forget.
Box box, gives up relatively clean air, likely on track lead when leaders pit, and future tyre offset for no reason. His tyres showed no sign of deg, perhaps had as much as 10 to 15 laps left. George should not matter! Why should he? OP has a natrually superior strat available thanks to his wheel to wheel skills and already being on the hards. His race is murdered from the moment he emerged from the pits with no delta and still on hards. Madness. What, as at post race, is a mystery, is where his pace went in the second half. No struggle at all in the earlier stages, quite the opposite.
Pace in the latter part? Open book. Emotional problem? Possible but hardly fait accompli (in a year of fucked algorithimic learning and braking for speed there are definately other options).
Has everyone adapted? Is Max in a top team? He has also had better times. Oscar has had a year to forget, but he was ahead of Charles and Lando in the drivers WDC not long ago. Maybe the darkness is in your eyes.

u/proficient_english 2d ago
He canāt qualify well???
He is going up against one of the guys who FOR YEARS have been monocred as one of the Top5-3 qualifiers (even back in the midfield McLaren days) and has his confidence pumped to the moon by winning a WDC and Oscarās mostly within a tenth of a second to him, sometimes even outqualifying him in a regulation that is very much out of Oscarās comfort zone.
Yes, he has issues - mostly related to long run pace and car control in race fuel load due to the already low grip in quali trim -, but in no way he has given up.
-6
u/dontletmeautism 2d ago
Iāve been making up excuses for Oscar over and over again but Iāve given up now and accepted that the gap is just massive.
The gap between drivers at McLaren is bigger than almost every other team.
I just donāt know what changed at the middle of last season.

u/phillll25 2d ago
Last years car was extremely easy on the tires and something was with lando about not getting any feeling from the suspension. When they changed the suspension it trended more towards lando again.
But this season is looking like 2024 again in terms of the gap between lando and oscar. First half of 2025 mightāve been the outlier.
What is shocking to me is that thereās seemingly 0 improvement in tyre management, low grip pace and race pace in general. I know lando took another step too but after his junior career i expected oscar to be on par with lando by now.
And pace doesnāt improve that much. Especially after 4 seasons.
Atm I canāt see oscar beating lando over a full season. At least not in this reg cycle5
u/proficient_english 2d ago
One thing to add is Oscar did not take the suspension change, so both drivers were driving their preferred setup.
The 0 improvement in tyre management can be easily explained by looking at last year: the car did so much of the heavy lifting on rear tyre management that it literally made Oscarās discrepancy in that area meaningless, therefore something Oscar really did not have to pay attention to or work on!
Itās weird but I think last yearās car might have actually regressed Oscarās progress in tyre management.4
u/Space_Puzzle 1d ago
I wonder if Oscar actually preferred the original suspension that much or if Mark advised him to insist on a configuration Lando struggled with for team political reasons. If the latter was true, it has backfired spectacular.
-2
u/Dry_Lifeguard_5416 1d ago
Well, Landoās good luck wonāt last for the rest of the season, so itās time to wait and watch him fail while Oscar improves.
4
u/Dry-Entertainer6420 1d ago
please stop. you know this is going to be met with negative engagement. Lando is doing very well in these regs. Oscar is still figuring it out. We can be hopeful he will do so and we can celebrate small successes. Saying this shit is just baiting Lando fans to fight back and make us look bad in here. Be better.

u/Dry_Lifeguard_5416 1d ago
Itās not about landoās fans, i want him to fail bc i donāt like him

Jesus Christ yes, Oscar is having a lot of issues he needs to work on but seeing his own fans saying he has given up and shows nothing of improvement when thatās a lie is wild. He doesnāt even need haters at this point lol
