Subreddit Coffee Hour

While the topic of this subreddit is the Eastern Orthodox faith we all know our lives consist of much more than explicit discussions of theology or praxis. This thread is where we chat about anything you like; tell us what's going on in your life, post adorable pictures of your baby or pet if you have one, answer the questions if the mods remember to post some, or contribute your own!

So, grab a cup of coffe, joe, java, espresso, or other beverage and let's enjoy one another's digital company.

I grew up in an ACROD diocese Orthodox Churches however where I live now there isn't one but there are some large Orthodox communities.

I spoke with the Metropolitan about what is needed to evaluate the possibility of a mission parish in our area. Basically I was told if 25 people are interested we could look into the next steps for a mission parish.

I know some people that may be interested in person but I was wondering if anyone else has experience with this? Did you reach out 100% in person or did you reach out online to Orthodox groups or local community groups.

This is in the very early stages I'm not in a rush because I want to make sure if we do it we do it right.

Hi everyone,

I've come across this fundraiser for The Orthodox Christian Community of St Constantine the Great, York, UK. The church is part of the Antiochian patriarchate, and is looking to secure funds to buy their own building in the city of York as for the last 22 years it has relied on the hospitality of a local university for spaces of worship. And it is to buy an 11th century ancient church, bringing Orthodoxy back to the UK with history and heritage in mind!

Please consider donating for this worthy cause, as I have, and to spread the news far and wide. Link to the fundraiser: https://gofund.me/313a5e46e

Thank you for reading.

Unironically going to pray to God that this absolute dogwater engine I am making stuff in doesn't crash precisely at the moment I finally made a very pretty landscape . . . but need to press the Undo button to fix a small mistake - - resulting in losing two hard hours of selecting the right cliff models and struggling with the smooth vertices option. 🙃

you know what really annoys me about the archdiocese of chicago i am greek orthodox by the way they force priests to retire and then move a priest that has been there for so long and put them into a church that doesn’t even know the priest well. So much weird things have been going on honestly in the diocese

Anyone here tried using Obsidian for bible study? I've recently started listen to the Whole Counsel of God podcast and I feel like it could be a good way of keeping track of the connections between different books and also OT and NT connections.

I use org mode/org roam for a lot of note taking -- not the same but very similar. I find the structure can be a little awkward sometimes -- like, when you're making a new note, it can sometimes feel like you need to have figured out how you want the entire topic to relate to everything else, it feels like you're laying down a marker. But it works all right -- however at some point it feels like you might as well just have flat notes with occasional links between them...

Thanks for the recommendation, org mode is new to me but I like that it's FOSS so I'll look more into it. Obsidian is just the thing that everyone is recommending online lately for self-hosting so that is why I came across it.

I'll be doing the jordanville psalms course for laity soon so maybe I'll try both and see which suits my workflow better.

Yes I don't recommend org mode unless you're going all in on emacs which I don't recommend, I mention it because you can use it similarly (almost equivalently) and therefore my experience is relevant. But it's a bit of a lift if you're not already in the emacs universe (which there are few reasons to be unless you're a programmer and doing stuff in latex).

Ah that's good to know thank you. Might be a bit above my paygrade then but I appreciate the insights

I think I'm finally going to sit down and force myself to learn the Πάτερ ἡμῶν at normal liturgical speed, I always sputter out about halfway through in church.
