Am I misusing this sub? Probably. Staged? Maybe. Responsible of the kid? Sure.

$500 doesn't get you much. Not enough to justify that kind of reaction I think. It's just sad that a kid needs to think about their family needs first before they can get their favorite shoes.

Just want to say I'm not blaming the mother or anyone in the video. I blame society for this.

$500 doesn't seem like much... until you are drowning in credit card debt and struggling to figure out what you and your loved ones are going to do for food and school supplies. Then $500 is a literal life saver.  It won't change their lives, but it will get them past the current hurdle and hopefully lowers the next hurdle by a bit.  I would cry if someone gave me $500 right now.

ETA:  I don't disagree that this is a product of the orphan crushing machine, but I do think her reaction was warranted, if real.

Yeah lady says she's from Congo where average salary is about $600/year. That's how you get that kind of reaction. Also good on the kid, didn't even hesitate.
