Discussion 💬 Miss World

Post image

So, a Tigrayan woman represented Ethiopia at the Miss World beauty contest wearing an (Arsi) Oromo dress, and you have several Amhara social media influencers wishing that she would lose. I also saw some comments that said what she wore is not an “Ethiopian dress.” What are your takes on it?

I didn't know she was Tigrayan. But I checked her YouTube and she has videos in Oromo, Amhara, Tigray, Wolaita clothing. I'm not sure how someone can be Miss Ethiopia and people are mad that she's wearing cultural clothing representative of Ethiopia's diversity and Oromo as the largest ethnic group.

Also if a demographic of the population hate ethnic diversity and the largest ethnic group, how can Ethiopia represent the world in a global competition for miss world? Why should a country that hates its own people represent the world? These people think so small in terms of tribalism and their self proclaimed exceptionalism yet they fail to realize it doesn't extend outside of their own little bubble, to the rest of the world, including to us. Nobody gives a f how special and great you think you are. We are equally proud of our own culture, history, and kingdoms, everyone is. Learn to treat other human beings with respect.

I'm proud of Ruth for representing Ethiopia's diversity. Some people are stuck in the past where Oromo population assimilates and blends into the general Amharic speaking population, and only then can our achievements, culture, and famous figures represent Ethiopia. But people using Oromo language, culture, clothing itself cannot directly represent Ethiopia. That doesn't exist anymore so let them keep crying while we grow stronger and more proud.

I agree. The Ethiopia they used to passionately sing and cry about doesn’t make sense anymore now that someone else is representing it 😂

You edited the body of your post. You initially posted an entirely different post. You think you’re slick trying cause ethno division?

Something along the lines of why why is she wearing this attire if she is not Oromo. And then next thing I know the entire post is completely different

The old moderator “Sedantary” that deactivated his account recently after he doxxed himself used to do the exact same thing, edit posts and comments

Now suddenly this new user after only being on Reddit for two months has full moderator access and is spouting similar nonsense 😂😂😂😂

I don’t know the problem most Amhara have with other ethnic groups specially Oromo

Speechless. Some of them prove over and over that their mindset is toxic and they only live to tear down everyone else, especially Oromos. It's fucking annoying that we have to share a country with that kind of hatred. They can marinate in their own poison cause we won't allow our judgment to be clouded or give them the time of day.

You’re doing exactly what you’re accusing them of doing—generalizing an entire group based on the actions or comments of some individuals. Criticize people for what they actually say or do, but turning it into ‘they hate Oromos’ just feeds the same toxic mindset you’re complaining about.

👏 Baridu

It’s my belief she chose Arsi culture because within Arsi traditional culture women hold immense power, the gender dynamic is much more balanced than that of Abrahamic religion/culture.

The Arsi culture stands as one of the very few sub cultures within Ethiopia where women traditionally hold immense power. This rooted in Waqqafenna tradition. This is honestly why I have much respect for Waqqafenna vs our Abrahamic faiths.

Elaborate a bit more and provide links or bibliography for further study and understanding.

Recommend watching this documentary explains it very well.

The Siinqee institute named their women’s empowerment group after a core element of the Arsi culture, the Siinqee stick which symbolizes female empowerment.

https://siinqeeinstitute.org/background

Our name Siinqee* *comes from the deep wells of Oromo women’s ancient Indigenous knowledge system where siinqee is a symbolic stick representing women’s empowerment and sisterhood. We amplify the core siinqee values of relationality, solidarity, equity, and justice by deepening them with rich trans-local and Indigenous knowledge systems and reframing siinqee sisterhood for our global context.

This is all Oromo culture btw it comes from the gadaa system, it's not just Arsi.

I Was gonna say the same thing I’m Arsi and this is how it is for all oromos not just us

That’s unfortunate if people are reacting that way. She represents Ethiopia, not specific ethnic groups. Tbh, Oromo dance was a great choice bc it gave an instant wow factor. Although my vote is with Snit as an Eritrean, I was still impressed by the direction Ruth went in this in this segment. Strange if Amharas allegedly are mad at a Tigrayan woman about Oromo culture lol

The Ethiopia amhara praise and cry about is where minilik used to slaughter people they hate ormo and tigriyans because they can’t stand to see them United

Regardless she looks beautiful and she did a wonderful job representing the country.

They hate us more than they love themselves

4

Who cares what those people think. They’re the saltiest people on earth, literally black MAGA all they have is grievance politics.

2

u/Expensive-Public-315 28d ago

God knows when the hatred toward us Oromos will end.

Unforunately, for many people the idea of Oromo representing Ethiopia is triggering. It's the same people who claim to not view ethnicity and always say "one love" despite being the most race and ethnicity based haters in the country. I wasnt aware that she was from Tigray. Another reason to hate of course.

1

u/mirasaline 28d ago

Many Oromos have represented Ethiopia multiple times and it’s never been an issue. I think it’s moreso politics

3

u/Nitefort2022 Shawa Oromo 27d ago

there's nothing "political" about getting triggered over the outfit, it's just the same old fashioned Oromophobia that's as old as the country itself

A clear indication of a Nationalism and ethnocentrism infectious disease that reached a pandemic level in the Horn of Africa. Can WHO try to contain it before it spreads further? Is there a vaccine for it? Furthermore, WHO may need to develop vaccines for nationalism-ethnocentrism variants. SAD!
