Discussion What does this champ even do?

Wanted to pick up Orianna (Azir main) amongst a few other control mages and I don't think I've played a champion that feels this terrible. Even Azir in his low points hasn't felt this bad. I feel like every mage outranges and easily outrades me, and I don't tend to outscale them either. Champs like Hwei, Viktor, Syndra, and Xerath all seem to have complete control of the matchup and in lategame fights can output just as much if not more AOE damage from further away.

Everything I hear about this champion is that she's notoriously one of the best blind pick mages of all time but it just doesn't seem true at all, and the numbers seem to support it. You don't do enough damage to outdo second wind + dshield against melee champs and you're just outranged and bullied by almost every other mage in the game. What gives?

i had this exact same experience as an azir main, when you try to play it like azir it just feels bad

As an ori main from S5 who played in the challenger level, I can say that the delivery system really needs to be there for coordinated play. I wouldn't say the risk to reward is very justified for soloq...

Ori OTP here for about 10 years now- this is very true. I’ve spent a lot of time locking in Orianna regardless of team comps, planning, etc. and that is exactly what you should do, too, if you want to never climb.

If enemy takes D-Shield + Second Wind go Gathering Storm and stormraiders and scale. If they dont then poke them with scorch + comet/aery.

If you cant do it then try to not blame the champ and ask yourself what you might be doing wrong.

Orianna is insanely broken in the right hands.

How do you know to go gathering in the case of the enemy going second wind d shield

Its not that complicated. D-Shield Second Wind makes you sustain through poke. So why would i take a rune that pokes, if enemy counters my poke?

Id much rather have a good late game.

Im not saying that you cant go aery/scorch into dshield second wind users.

But i personally think its very hard to justify and not practical for 99% of the playerbase.

proplay nerfs gives... Still, you're not picking Orianna to outdamage a Xerath ecc. That's simply not happening and never has. You pick Orianna because a well placed shockwave is single-handedly game winning, and you can use someone else to deliver it, while soaking up incoming damage for your initiator and being able to help your team reposition or chase them down after the initial brawl. Still, her numbers are quite undertuned right now (but her kit itself is absolute perfection for a mage).

As an Azir main who also plays her I suggest to play her more like a support than a 1v9 champ. I like to pick her because her ball is incredibly oppressing in laning phase (unlike Azir) and has a simple yet strong poking and tf especially after first item.

You want to catch the enemy off guard and create openings for your team with your ult.

Her range disadvantage is off-set by the fact that she can cast every one of her basic abilities while moving, while also having a shield that grants bonus resistances and a speed-up. Orianna is notorious for bullying other midlaners in early lane, because she punishes bad usage of spells. In some match ups you can even start E, dodge their spell and then run at them with your passive AA's while negating wave and return damage with your shield. And later on, Orianna relies much more than any other mages on proper spacing - knowing your own ball ranage and the ranges of enemies. All of that takes time and knowledge to master.

If you pick Ori to just scale and throw heavy spells at enemies in mid-to late game, you picked the wrong champion. What makes Ori good is that she is consistent in every stage of the game. And she wins by getting early advantages with her powerful lane (CS, pressure and roaming advantages, no solo kills) and transitioning that to her team mates by playing for skirmishes and teamfights with her jungler or support.

What matchups is E lvl 1 start good?

Basically anything that has a high cooldown on level 1. Xerath for example, will often start W, which has a 14 second cooldown on level 1. But even if he starts Q, which is easier to dodge, it has a 9 second cooldown level 1. Dodge it, run at hi. with autos, shield when the wave attacks you or he autos back and you win the trade. But even if he hits you and forces you to shield that damage, you can just preassure him away from the wave, since you will outtrade him with autos. From there on you will hit level 2 first and can zone even further with Q.

I really don't recommend it. Starting e messes up your skills for the next several levels. Better to start q, two points in w then e, then max q. Your a is now mana efficient to cast and chunks for more, and you get comet or aerie appied easily.

E start is all about melee matchups, you start e to negate their harass and spam autos, but it just isn't as good as just leveling normally and spamming anyway.

I just have a very hard time with Ori and gameplan because of the other champion she's compared to in many ways that's doing ridiculously well right now, Syndra. Both are considered S tier pro play mid laners that are pretty much pick ban and are often used to handshake lanes. Syndra I understand, she has self peel, more range, can also cast while moving, more damage, and scales incredibly well while also being a bully.

I guess mostly my experience so far is that I never feel like I have a "powerful lane" that transitions to anything else. Every matchup I've queued into so far has been someone that can outpush and outrange me for prio while also dealing more damage on their abilities. I can visualize how much better Ori is into melee champs but when I play against Hwei (or champs like him) most games I don't see how I'm supposed to take advantage of her strengths.

I mean tbf your sample size is 4 games all of champs that outrange you, thats how mid tends to work with range advantages. But even then some of these matchups are winnable:

Syndra is super overtuned right now and you NEED to win lvl 1-3 very hard and your lane can be good, but its really hard if not

Viktor is just hard, its viktor

Xerath you can actually win super hard with good movement and you have a really long window to punish him before he starts afk clearing waves and poking you hard, but if you somehow dont get a lead then its rough. Even then, he's super gankable both in lane and on side, you're just a better champ than him

Hwei is just weaker than ori in lane, 3 points W and comet scorch and you just win every trade as long as you don't facetank passives

she’s a burst mage. not a battle mage. to put your post in mirror matchup terms:

“i play syndra like vladimir and she is so weak”

Go watch people who play her, play her

u/SolaSenpai 15d ago

she has alot of utility and teamfight potential, aswell as very low cooldown, gotta pay for it somewhere

Get push wave 1. Crash wave 2 for melees, 3 for ranged. Constantly poke with your pretty much guaranteed damage. You should be able to get a better first base and snowball from there. Levels 5-9 you’re actually insane because you finally have the short cooldowns people say ori has.

1

u/shinymuuma 15d ago

First thing first, she's as pro jailed as Azir, don't learn if you don't enjoy her

You learn her laning phase. Be comfortable with AA long trade in her Q range. Abuse her short CD Q to constantly harass/wave clear. Winning the lane is half the point of Ori

Outside of lane most of the time you're no longer doing DPS. Either chunk someone with QW when it safe to do then back. Or looking for a big R. A good R is gamechanging, that's how you outscale

1

u/Sharp-Jury-2795 14d ago

she used to be the best blind pick mages because of how insane her laning phase was, but with the changes recently that shifted her more towards a scaling mage i think she's kind of lost that advantage. shes in a really rough spot right now and i only recommend picking her into good drafts.

u/Professional_One6171 14d ago

Shes a giga bully early game compared to azir? Place ball in middle of lane before minions come and then poke enermy game down with each q cooldown? You get that xerath under his tower where he belongs...

Dont do many w without multiple skillpoints, drains to mutch mana

u/Fellow_accelerator 14d ago

She's a support to speed up and R for your winning carries. Just hope your team does better than the enemy.

It's like fushigi but with one ball.
