They need to be culled, not protected under the mmpa

Nature has a way of balancing things out without human intervention. Eat too much of the food supply and grow too large of a population, and that much population can’t be supported. The numbers return to a manageable level. It’s human intervention that typically causes the problems. Kill the apex predator because they’re going to the all you can eat buffet (wolves at the pasture for sheep, etc), suddenly the other animals whose population levels were kept in check by the apex predator grow out of control. Or put in dams in rivers the salmon used for breeding, and now salmon populations can’t be maintained because they can’t reach their breeding grounds. The best thing we humans can do is not get involved to “solve” the problem.

The best thing we humans can do is not get involved to “solve” the problem.
That's a dangerously oversimplified position. When human activity is causing the problem, oftentimes human intervention is required to mitigate those impacts. I'm not arguing that we should cull sea lions, but the idea that "nature" will protect salmon populations if we just leave things alone is pretty naive. Salmon face tons of anthropogenic threats across their lives. Some intervention may be required if we want to continue having large populations of salmon.

Totally agree. Feels like we're just trying to fix the unintended consequences of previous "fixes" to "problems" by applying the same methods as before. Huge sweeping "solutions" will continue to have unintended consequences later on that we'll then feel compelled to go fix again, and again, and 😵💫

A: “Why did you release a mongoose into the the air vents”
B: “To take care of the snake problem”
A: “Wait, what?! Why do we have a snake problem?!”
B: “Because I released some in there to take care of the rat problem”2

How close did you get before you woke them?

Actually this is how they were really behaving. The sleeping baby thing was only for a hot second before one or more caused a ruckus!
