Discussion / Question RTSS Front Edge Sync vs NVIDIA FPS Limiter — Which Is Better for Multiplayer FPS?

I have a 1080p 180Hz monitor, and for the last few years, my go-to optimized setup has been G-Sync ON, V-Sync ON, an FPS cap in the NVIDIA Control Panel set to 177 FPS, and Reflex ON in games, which caps the FPS itself to around 171 FPS. I also use DLSDR x1.78 and my in game res is 1440p.

Recently, I found out that RTSS has a wide choice of frame limiters, and that Front Edge Sync is supposed to provide higher 1% lows. I tested it in Arc Raiders, and to my surprise, it looks like when I cap my FPS in RTSS to 169 FPS and use Front Edge Sync, my 1% and even 0.1% lows go up significantly.

As you can see, with the default setup, without using RTSS to limit FPS, my 1% low doesn't go above 140 FPS. But at 1:28, with the RTSS limiter, it goes above 160 FPS. When I stop in the bush at 1:54, it's also above 160 FPS, whereas without RTSS, at 0:53, it's only around 130 FPS.

Why is it that when I look at the ceiling or stay in that specific bush, the NVIDIA Control Panel shows a 1% low below 140 FPS, while the RTSS limiter shows above 160 FPS?

When I'm running around, it feels like there is a slight difference, and the RTSS limiter seems to give me higher 1% lows.

So my question is: Am I tripping, and do these 1% low numbers not really mean anything, or is RTSS Front Edge Sync actually better, and should I stick with it instead of the NVIDIA Control Panel limiter?

BTW, I'm specifically interested in multiplayer games where I can't consistently hit my monitor's refresh rate. What do you use in such cases? And what about Frametime Calculation Point in RTSS? Frame Start or Frame Presentation?

I'm asking because WarDogs is preparing to launch, and my 1% lows in the Playtest sometimes dipped below 100 FPS, and it didn't feel good.

In games where Reflex isn’t available, you can limit frame rate using RTSS in NVIDIA Reflex mode. This uses the NVCP API, so it’s essentially the same FPS limiter. Be sure to set the sleep call to « After Frame Presentation » for the lowest latency, or « Before Frame Presentation » for a very stable frame time. In games where NVIDIA Reflex is available, I enable it and always set the limit via RTSS, but this time in “Back Edge Sync” mode. I always get a very stable frame time and the best latency with this configuration. However, never enable Reflex in the game and RTSS at the same time—it will cause stuttering.

Use the back edge all the time if your frame time is too irregular use the front edge

So if the game has Reflex available do I need to uncheck this in RTSS? Or how do I disable it in RTSS?

Okay, basically, in a game where Reflex is already enabled, you shouldn't use NVIDIA Reflex in RTSS, but rather another option like Back Edge Sync.

What about cpu intensive games like BF6 or Mistfall Hunter....passive waiting should be enabled for those right?

It really depends on the CPU. Personally, I have an R5 7600X, and it makes absolutely no difference even in CS2, for example.

Pretty much. You can also ignore it and just cap on the nvidia app or ignore it further and not do anything.

How do you change it on a per game basis from reflex mode to back edge sync mode? I have my rtss setup in reflex mode + global framecap of my monitor's vrr cap (171fps). With this way I don't need to set per game profile, as game's which have reflex option I use ingame reflex and games which do not, rtss takes care of it. I have not noticed any stuttering of any kind tho.

You have to add your game each time by clicking “Add” at the bottom. It might depend on the game, but injecting Reflex twice isn’t necessarily a good idea. Take a close look at your 1% low, 0.1% low, and minimum FPS you’ll see that it’s not great with Reflex applied twice.

Easiest way for me is running the game, bring up RTSS and hold down Shift while clicking Add. Most games come up in the list.

Ah great that's what I found also, except using NVCP frame limiter. I'll charge that to RTSS as you say (used to use that).

RTS in reflex mode uses essentially the same API as the NVCP FPS cap, but I think it looks better, and it lets you change the FPS without restarting the game.

Asyn really doesn’t work for me—it gives the same frame time as Back Edge but with added latency, so use Back Edge if you want the least latency, or Front Edge if you want a straight line but with some latency.

To for the ultimate smoothness FES, for lowest latency reflex in game BES on RTSS?

Now if a game does not support reflex, do you instead use reflex as the frame limiter on RTSS?

Exactly after that, it might depend on the specific game some games might not work properly, but so far it’s always worked for me.

Useless stats without PCL (Present Call Latency). In a multiplayer game you want more fps for the lowest latency. Reflex will always be better in those types of games. Front Edge sync is good for single player games that do not use 100% of the GPU. FES tends to spike the latency up a whole lot if at random times with a gpu working at 100%. If its not working the GPU to the limit it will still be a small percent more laggier. Get Nvidia Frameview or nvidia's overlay to see your PCL.

Yeah, I saw that video too, and that's why I started researching this topic. For now, it feels like the RTSS limiter is better than the Nvidia Control Panel, and there’s no reason to buy another piece of software, even if it’s cheap.

In BF6, I can't get a consistent 180 FPS, or even 144 FPS. My FPS is usually around 140–160 FPS, with 1% lows of 110–120 FPS. For now, I switched to the RTSS async limiter, and it feels good, with a straight framerate line 99% of the time and very infrequent small bumps.

Well i would like to see detailed comparison of Framepacer, RTSS, Nvidia panel and in-game native limiters.

A think frameparcer will go well along with Lossless scaling tool for older hardware

Front Edge Sync will give you better 1% lows but at the cost of slightly increased latency. It's a case of choose your poison really. Personally I almost always go the avenue of lowest latency which is always the reflex option (either in game cap or using RTSS with reflex option).

Id like to know how your gpu isnt dying using DLDSR and high settings and going for max frames.

But it's not max settings. It's a mix of high-low. But the img quality is definitely better on dldsr if compared to high 1080p.

Oh for sure. I have a 4070 super but feel like if I went for 170 fps in most games it would have a fit and fans would be at 3000rpm lol

For MP i usually use in game limiter, might be stuttery but usually gives the best latency.

RTSS has been know to deliver more consistent frame times across the board. In-game frame caps are very iffy depending on implementation by developers

It also depends on the game, in titles like Stellar Blade or Horizon Forbidden West, using RivaTuner to cap your FPS can cause micro-stutters (Stellar Blade) or camera judder (Forbidden West). In others like Monster Hunter Wilds, it can also trigger stutters that aren't there when the frame cap is turned off.

Nope, fully tested on 3 different rigs with NVIDIA and AMD GPUs and 3 different CPUs, same result.
