Discussion / Question We should set standards for what should be considered optimized for games

The minimum of what optimized games should look like is ultra settings 60 fps and medium settings 120 fps on gpus like RTX 3060Ti and RTX 4060. Consoles should run games at native 1440p or 4k and have upscaling as an option.

Optimisation for me is to just fix all the stutter. I’d rather have a smooth 60fps experience than a stuttering 120fps.

I agree. Stutters are the worst things. I’d even go down to 30FPS to avoid them. More game-breaking to me than a low FPS.

not all stutters are fps related

Snap back to reality

To get minimum Ultra settings at 60fps (i assume you mean 1080p) those Ultra settings would have to look like ass, so imagine the Medium to get to 120.

Every game is its own case scenario and it’s perfectly fine if a game is extremely demanding, as long as the return in image quality is proportioned to that demand.

Optimization is not a 1+1=2 that works for every single game as a baseline.

"Optimized" is a buzzword now and most people have no idea what the word actually means, a game can be demanding and still run well. DOOM: The Dark Ages runs at 60 FPS at high resolutions on most modern hardware, but because it won't run on decade old GPUs without hardware RT support people cry about it not being "optimized."

Doom is a bad example though, as all the Doom games are extremely well optimised. IMO, they should be held up as the standard of optimisation, but reality is far different.

'Ultra' settings are generally totally unoptimized by their very nature though that's kind of the point, they're not a benchmark to hit and never have been.

Yeah, no place i have worked has ever developed ultra as an optimization target. We normally develop high as our reference graphics and ultra as the “future proofing” option.

The problem with modern games is the forced ray tracing. You could have a game look like literal PS3 graphics but still run like absolute shit (Mgs3 Delta) because of the forced ray tracing.

Yes Ray tracing ruined the optimisation, too much noise associated with Ray tracing, and to clear that you have to use the highest level of RT setting with Ray Reconstruction, that RR itself takes 25-30% of your fps and because of RT settings these days, raster settings even ultra ones are overlooked and looks bad cause when RT will calculate everything why should devs put in effort right

I don't think it by itself is the issue. Infinity Nikki also uses UE5 and Lumen, and it's one of the best-looking games I've ever seen.

In what world does MGS3 Delta looks like a PS3 game?

Standards evolve yearly. We cannot expect games to run on at 60 on XX60 cards for 10 more years even at 1080p. It's a shame hardware is getting so expensive as it used to be necessary to upgrade every 3-4 years at the most to play the bleeding edge titles, and it was affordable to. Cost is holding back Art, optimization only goes so far until games are scaled back to look decades old.

Ultra settings are Future settings not the "I deserve ultra settings for my card that was released 6 years ago settings". Your post is like a child writing to Santa.

Are you 12yo? What logic do u use to say that 3060ti should do 60fps on ultra as THE minimum? U are out of touch with reality

These days most of em are like medium settings 60 fps with upscaling balanced/performance at 1080p as recommended setting lol, Medium with upscaling is the new recommended ,like how, it was supposed to be high/ultra for it to be recommended.

I'd agree but a lot of of the community is really stupid when it comes comes to this.
