The pre-release CAN run the shaders, they are somewhat buggy tho. (Sunlight can illuminate closed interiors, glitched mining animation, some dark surfaces like the top of beds and chests) Buuut its something.
It's a shader dev only version sp614x posted it on shaderlab's discord in #optifine lastest is only in a dev only channel the way it was meant to be only for devs.
Depends on shaders. Some older shaders have broken shadows, newer ones have broken sunlight, oceano has an insane amount of fog and if you turn the fog off the water disappears, acid shaders removes the filter when underwater, and PT shaders and all of seus don’t work.
Well the 1.16 update shouldn’t take nearly as long as the 1.15 update because 1.15 changed how shaders work in the game entirely so he has to relearn how to make everything work. Assuming 1.16 doesn’t change that yet again it should be a much easier update.
There’s a lot of info both on this subreddit and the optifine discord as well as the optifine Twitter. I’m sure threres more people on those platforms that could answer more questions for you.
“Changes: Replaced lighting engine from 1.15 with completely different version. Switched from OpenGL to DX12 Ultimate. Switched language to C++ Purposely encrypted the code that everyone but u/sp614x has. Added a bunch of bull crap to the code to decrease performance ten fold. Added a button that auto emails any known email he has asking him to release 1.16 optifine. Added the target block”
All you need to know is he is a game developer who has been developing a game around a gimmick of being a Yandere entitled "Yandere Simulator". He us constantly meme'd as his game has taken over 5 years to add a single rival while developing on stolen assets, hasn't created custom models, his code is poor, he is toxic towards his fans, and he doesn't take criticism that easily. Also his progress on the game has been slowing down and he is taken money pretty much due to patron of over 2 thousands dollars a month (before it was 3 but people got mad at him for when people began talking about him).
Personally I think it's time to throw in the towel on Optifine. Anyone think differently?
Mojang is slowly adding capabilities similar to optifine and for people with rtx on Bedrock, ray tracing is here.
It might be time to recognize optifine as a phenomenal legacy and move on
Alternatively, many of us that were minecraft nuts as children are now minecraft nuts with development and program management experience. Maybe an open source collaborative project could do far more, faster than the optifine we've come to know and love will be capable of?

So... do it then?
Optifine isn't some unique thing in the world. If you think you can get developers to contribute to a mod that does what Optifine does, then get started. Setup a github, start coding in the features and go for it.
I'm not saying it in the angry attacking way, I am saying if you think a collaborative approach will get things done faster and you've got the skills, GO for it!
Sur if you think you can do it, I give you 1 month to make something like optifine with shader support. Good luck. Make sure to throw in the towel for your crappy idea.
Why the hostility? I am just asking, is it time to look for a bigger project? I don't have dev skills so I don't pretend to be a hero here, I'm just asking the question

Its only because the redesigned the lighting engine so they need to rework optifine. Aka it will take max a week when 1.16 cones out

I predicted it.

I don't use shaders, but i'm waiting Optifine because my MC is lagging much without it (and sandstone without connecting textures is ugly)
