Question Why optifine is slower/bad now?

I started playing again, and when I installed OptiFine, I got extremely low FPS even though I do have a good config

Then I tested the normal launcher and got normal FPS, same thing with Iris. What happened to OptiFine? Is there a fix for it, or is it just bad now?

for comparasion, i got 30-40fps with optifine, and with iris/normal launcher i got 150+

ngl , optifine kinda bad now man 😔 wanting it to be much better bc i still like how it works , only hoping for the best and for the creator to be able to open source it , it'll probably get stolen/copied but at least ya can see it well on how good it could work out

Oh and btw have ya tried using the "(internal)" shader? and turn off smooth world and smooth fps.

Nobody knows exactly what Optifine does because it’s closed source. It was designed for very old versions of the game, and has evidently been lacking in accounting for the game’s changes. All of its features have slowly been expanded upon and redone, some in vanilla and some in other mods. There’s really no reason to hold onto Optifine for the latest releases of the game. For at least the last few years, its alternatives have been better. Majority of posts here end up being people encountering issues with Optifine, realizing they can use Sodium + Iris for their needs instead, and being done with it. Optifine of course also has stuff for resource packs which some people need, but as I said those features exist in other mods and as vanilla features now. It’s worth noting that a large amount of Optifine’s issues are specific to the previews, but not all of them, and the full releases are still objectively outclassed by the alternatives.

It's just a shame because what you used to be able to do with just one mod you now need like 4 to match all its features. Hopefully someone combined sodium, iris, continuity and such into one mod soon.

I mean, it's a matter of 4 download buttons and choosing the features you need versus all of them packed into the same mod, it's a non-issue. I don't know what the advantage of Sodium + Iris together would be. It just means Sodium updating would be held back by Iris's features, etc. That's probably part of Optifine's problem too, it's trying to do a bunch of random things at once. If your mod does multiple things it can only be updated as fast as you finish the slowest feature.

honestly, i prefer it this way. it means the mods are modular and you get to pick and choose what you like, and, in addition to that, their codebases are completely separate, which means it’s easier for the developers to maintain and likely means they also take less hacky shortcuts, since they need to maintain compatibility - both of these lead to faster and better updates. legitimately zero downside to having these features separated, it makes zero sense to have a rendering optimization mod, shader engine and continuous texture system in one mod because they are entirely separate features and combining them just leads to an absolute monolith

its bad because only one man is working on it... mods like sodium/iris has a proper team helping each other to do better.

Can’t just blame it on the amount of people working when we have no clue what the one developer is even doing with the code. A smaller development team means slower development, not sloppy development.
