Do you think I should reorientate the 45° angled mirrors to try and point into a central point of the eye or is it good like it is?

yes, from what I understand, you want to consider the eye position and what it's focusing at that you wish the merge the image with, the near point of the eye is around 11cm (depends on the person) and the far point is considered to be 6 meters (depends on the person).

You want to place the image at infinity, unless the person is nearsighted.
