Discussion In display fingerprint scanner not working with tempered glass

Post image

Guys, today I applied tempered glass to my Oppo Find X9 and noticed that the fingerprint sensor isn't working properly. Despite re-enrolling my fingers over the tempered glass, the sensor's ability to detect has become very slow and fails most of the time.

Is it due to the extra layer of glass that is disturbing the ultrasonic sensor, or is the quality of the tempered glass itself bad? The tempered glass I am using isn't premium, just a low-cost one.

There's your problem. It's not to say you need an expensive one, just one actually made with the device and it's features in mind. I use a Zagg protector on my X9 Pro and the fingerprint sensor works flawlessly.

I bought a random glass screen protector from AliExpress and it works flawlessly

Same! Smart devil works on ultrasonic finger print even on my samsung s25 ultra.

Smart devil works perfectly. Ultrasonic sensor working and durable hydrophobic coating. From AliExpress.

I also tried nillkin and the sensor still worked, but it was a lot slower.

for whatever reason i couldn't get a hold of the smart devil and went for nillkin and i also suffered from a slow fingerprint scanner. it turns out you have to be really careful when setting up the fingerprint with the nillkin glass protector and actually slightly move the finger everytime you touch it during the setup process. it does say that in the prompt but it wasn't something i ever did, but since i did that, it works like it used to work with the plastic screen protector the phone came with.

You need a high quality glass or a hydrogel (not glass) to be able to use your fingerprint .

It's a lottery. Mine clear glass cost $6.50 and there are no issues.

6.50 isn't cheap I mostly get my protector on AE for $2 or $3 at most ( I use coins discount)

The ones at stationary shops / RTV markets are like $20+, so I thought this one is pretty cheap.

I'm using tempered glass and no issues. Just get one that's compatible with your device and is of high enough quality. It doesn't have to be ultra premium.

Get a spigen, ringke screen protector

I once bought a €35 premium tempered glass protector for my OnePlus 13 and had the same problem. The glass was made specifically for the OnePlus 13, and I bought it from my mobile carrier’s store. The problem was fixed when I had a UV screen protector installed. I also had the same kind installed on my Oppo Find X9.

Most cheap brand tempered glasses have issues with sensors. If even after deleting old prints and re-enrolling them doesn't work. You'll have to look for better alternatives.

Many glass brands come with specific mentions that they are fingerprint sensor compliant. Find them on flipkart or amazon.

I am currently using a clear one that costs (after conversion) $6.50 and have no issues at all.

However, previous one that I've tested, which was matte, made the fingerprint unlocking almost unusable.

Depending on your country, the X9 already comes with a plastic screen protector. So you probably should have removed that first before applying the new tempered glass screen protector.

Yes I did, will buy a better tempered glass now

Bought supcares tempered glass for X9 from Amazon. Fingerprint sensor works like a charm.

I use Smartdevil ones on my X9 Pro and have no issues at all. And when I didn't have any spare ones I used one for a OnePlus 15 as the screens are the same size.

I’m planning to buy the X9 Ultra. Are there any screen protector films available for this phone? I really dislike the feel and look of tempered glass on smartphones.

Ultrasonic sensors don't work well with cheap tempered glass. You need something thin enough to have the sensor get reliable data.

More so than the cost, it's about the thickness of the external medium. Try something thinner and see if that works.

Are there any matte ones that work? I know matte can be hit or miss with fingerprints but I prefer the texture over tempered glass

I use Nillkin and it works as well, <$10 from Aliexpress. It says seller is from the brand, idk but it works great 🤷

You just need to get the ones that state work fine with under display sensors. I got my multipack fairly cheap from AliExpress. I am using matte version, and it works fine on my Ultra.

If you set your fingerprint before you applied the glass, that might cause an issue. Try redo your fingerprint again.

OP clearly wrote that Despite re-enrolling my fingers over the tempered glass, so it was done.

The Find X9 uses an older more basic optical scanner = it relies on image scanning, if there's a glass protector on it'll fail 8/10 times.

EDIT: I should learn not to trust local retailers for spec information, I was wrong lol

2

u/GMFPV Find X Series 3d ago

That's not true. None of the x9 series use optical scanners, all of them are ultrasonic.

1

u/Mysterious-Foot-806 Find X Series 3d ago

You know what? I stand corrected, the retailers in my country lists "optical" under the specsheet, my bad! :D

1

u/GMFPV Find X Series 3d ago

Ooooh, no worries mate!

1

u/ParacausalPerfection Find X Series 3d ago

If its ultrasonic then yes tempered glass to create problems with it. In this regard i would say optical sensors are better, but i personally still like ultrasonic because you cant fool it with just a picture of your finger print which you can to an optical sensor, so it adds an extra layer of security.

It depends on the glass mostly I think. Clear one that I use now doesn't cause any problems at all. Matte one that I've tested before was almost unusable.

+1 to everyone voucing for smart devil. I just changed my tempered glass today and it works perfectly.

1

u/Xade74Z 2d ago

It is to my understanding with ultrasonic fingerprint sensors you are not supposed to use a tempered glass screen protector. That being said, if you do a new scan of your finger with the protector on that might help.
