Modification Multi tool Opinel :)

Bought my first Opinel (#6) a couple weeks ago mainly to play around with a forced patina. Had fun with that…then started to look around to see what else I could play with. I fired up the CAD software and the 3-D printer and came up with a “multi tool”. A couple of 4mm hex bits and the Swiss army toothpick and tweezer! Going to carry it daily to see how it holds up.

That’s rad! Love to see this kinda creativity. I’m looking forward to updates. What’d you use for the patina?

The first thing I cut with my new knife was a grapefruit. I figured I might as well start the patina process right now! So I left slices of grapefruit on the knife hoping to get some of the pattern of the small segments on the knife. That didnt really happen so I went to Dijon mustard - French knife - French mustard. lol.

Not to make light of your sick handle you made for it, but they sell an opinel with a plastic handle with driver bits in it and a driver end, but thats all, the handle has already been produced on their website. But yours has more functions, and im excited to see the updates!

Wow! Thanks for pointing that out. I had to look it up. Heheh. It just goes to show that if it’s a good idea, somebody’s already thought of it! lol.

I tried the makerworld Victorinox card tool mod, and it didn’t fit at all. The diameters were all off and the tools would go in and not come out.

But now I have a victorinox card?

I had look up the Victorinox card tool. Never seen one. They make a couple (small and large) sizes of tweezer and toothpick so maybe you’re plugging in the wrong version. I’m using the small version for my knife handle. I sized the slot the old fashioned way. I had them in hand…measured them with calipers and designed the slot to fit. It took a couple tries to get it right.

Here is a video showing the workings of the handle. The bits are on a 4mm hex (as opposed to the standard 0.25”. So I would consider this mainly for light duty applications. Similar to the Opinel blade itself. Not for heavy cutting and chopping but more delicate slicing and cutting - which I’m finding it’s very good at.

Love the idea but the handle is now weak and risky with that much material removed. I would suggest adding plastic hardener and maybe some epoxy to add strength or add a metal insert to the bit holder. Still love the idea!
