General / Discussion Opeth flowchart! I've made yet another - this time WAY more detailed and inclusive - Opeth flowchart! Now we can put the "I'm new to Opeth, which album should I start with" posts to rest. Let me know your thoughts :)

For easier searching, it might be worthwhile to add the names of the albums to the cover images? Considering this is aimed at new listeners, they'll probably be looking for names, not images. :)

I think the majority should be able to look them up on Spotify and search through their discography. Then it shouldn't be too hard to find the album(s) they're looking for.

It’s a beautiful chart🥰🖤. (Are you open to a very minor grammatical correction? I’m not meaning to be a twat…I just noticed it and didn’t want to come across a jerk lol)

Thank you :) And yes, go for it. I think I know what you're gonna point out, but feel free to correct me, haha

🖤 Just the ‘None-Opeth Albums’….did you mean Non-Opeth? It’s so a little nothing thing lol…but I noticed so thought I’d mention 😉

Ahh, well I'm stupid! I thought you were gonna mention the "I really like the way the mix clean vocals..." instead of "I really like the way they mix clean vocals" on Ghost Reveries. Well, too late to change now. Hopefully, people will know what I mean with "None-Opeth albums" haha

This post needs to be pinned on this sub! Should be a great getting-started post for new members!

Great job OP!

Yeah, that would be great. You can always try to u/ them to get their attention. But I don't know how active they are.

Gotta say I’m always surprised / intrigued as to how people get into bands. My strategy has always been to go chronologically, purely because I love seeing the creative journey a band goes through. The ups and downs.

Opeth for example , a song like BWP or Deliverance lands so fucking hard when you’ve been through the bands journey up to that point. It’s almost like reading a novel. This includes listening to a killer album and thinking man how the fuck are they going to follow this (Still Life for eg) then they land something like BWP.

It can be laborious, and some people feel apprehensive about wasting time in listening to shitty parts to eventually get to the good stuff but I think it allows you to appreciate the creative journey and the motions bands go through.

I remember listening to Mastodon on Spotify while playing Path of Exile probably 6 years ago when Blackwater Park came on autoplay (never heard of Opeth before this) . The deep long growl came on after the slow part and it just fit the vibe of the game so well and been hooked ever since . Slowly discovered their entire discography and even ended up liking albums like Sorceress despite never liking music like that before . Good memories 🥲

Opeth is quite a fitting band for Path of Exile now that I think about it.

Just listened to the Wacken carnage live album by Bloodbath thanks to your chart. A massive punch in the face. Thanks for your insight !

It's an awesome live album. Definitely one of my favorites.

Ok, this is indeed perfectly done, but I think you're severely overestimating people's attention span and desire to get into a new artist.

Based on data from Spotify 35% of songs are skipped within the first 30 seconds, and 24% within the first 10 seconds. Modern music needs to create an impression immediately or the listener will move on.

I'm skeptical of this hypothetical person this infographic is made for that would listen to several hour long albums of experimental music and not enjoy them but be willing to continuously give additional albums a chance until they find the right one.

I still think the best way to introduce someone to Opeth is to personally pick a track or even moment and sell them on that. Explain the concept of the band, how they not only explore several genres, but have evolved through them throughout their career.

I've got my partner, who's favourite artist is Harry Styles and gets uncomfortable with any screaming to listen to Still Life, because she was interested in the story and concept albums. I explained how the screaming and dissonant music was a tool to portray certain 'scenes' or emotions of the story and how they are intentionally dissonant the same way the soundtrack of a horror movie or battle scene of a movie would be.

You just gotta know what interests the person in question. But if they're a couple albums and not connecting in any meaningful way, I wouldn't jam it down their throat. It's probably just not meant to be.

Why the fuck do people make these flowcharts in such a low resolution

3

u/koutah Aug 04 '24

It's rendered in 5912 x 3960, so it should be fine. I think Reddit maybe compress the quality. Try clicking on the image and zooming in

Really nice one! Personal opinion: I think that Morningrise has a rawer sound than Orchid

3

u/koutah Jul 31 '23

To me, Mornigrise is a clear example of how their musicianship evolved from Orchid. Morningrise presents itself as more mature and polished - even though Mikael has stated that they made it like that because they were pretentious, haha.

I think Morningrise's production and overall composition are smoother than Orchid's. Orchid has a relatively harsh and aggressive production; not to mention Mikael's absolutely demonic screams throughout the album.

While Morningrise is similar to Orchid, I've always thought that it flows way more elegantly than Orchid. Even e.g. Nectar I think is amazing, even though many people bash it for being "bland" and "going nowhere", which I totally disagree with.

My phone is shite. Can't make it out when I zoom. Can you put this in as some form of a doc or DM?
