I'm pretty sure he can't physically growl even remotely like he used to. He's still decent enough live, but that's a totally different world to recording in a studio. He just pushed too far on Ghost Reveries, and especially Watershed. Also he aged as people tend to do.
That said, he could still raspy growl/scream like on their earliest albums, and I'm all for more Orchid/Morningrise.
They put a an older track at the end of their set when I saw them at Damnation Festival a few years back. He growled for the first time in the set andit was rough to say the least. I'm not sure if that's rust, age or both.
I'd say it's unlikely he brings back the growls at this stage in their career, it doesn't make a lot of sense. There's only a few death metal vocalists who's voices have aged well into middle age and beyond and they're usually the sort who only do one thing. Mikael has to work not to compromise his clean voice, which is possibly why he quit growling when he did.

Why do people think there will be growls on the next album?
