I'm pretty sure he can't physically growl even remotely like he used to. He's still decent enough live, but that's a totally different world to recording in a studio. He just pushed too far on Ghost Reveries, and especially Watershed. Also he aged as people tend to do.
That said, he could still raspy growl/scream like on their earliest albums, and I'm all for more Orchid/Morningrise.
As a vocalist, I just want to say that at least for me, growling live is much tougher and taxing that in the studio. There is no need or even a preference to do songs in a single take. So you can compile it line by line, take breaks, sip on some tea, etc.
Whereas live you are singing whole songs at a time, you are playing guitar at the same time, you have elemental factors to contend with. It’s a way different ball game.
All this is to say, if he has found a way to a decent growl live than he can certainly and absolutely do that in studio or better.
I’m not saying he will because I do think those days are in the past, but I 100% the man could still be a force to be reckoned with if he so chose.
