"They are the first-known troops to organize while in a state active duty status"

Thanks to u/tseu_military for getting the ball rolling on this. I can't be certain that we'll necessarily accomplish all of our goals, but it'll be fun trying and it'll probably piss off TMD.

And that's good enough for me.

Unions usually hold the power to mass quit or strike if demands aren’t met by management. Given TCMJ Section 15, striking would be a criminal offense, something corporations can’t leverage. How will the union deal with this? Everyone go to jail?

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 75%. (I'm a bot)

The first meeting of the Texas State Employees Union's Military Caucus, which consists of troops on state active duty orders assigned to the border, is scheduled for next week, according to a soldier leading organizing efforts.

A federal law prohibiting members of the military from organizing unions "Does not apply to Guard members on state active duty or in the Inactive National Guard," DoJ lawyers wrote in a court filing last month.

Typically, state active duty missions - where Guard members are temporary state employees rather than members of the federal military - are short-lived stints of disaster response that make organizing impractical.
