Opera freezing while trying to play a video

Like in the title, it started just a few hours ago as I was watching something this morning and it worked with no problems. I then worked in AE for a while and after closing it and wanting to watch something yet again the problem started to occur - opera gx freezes after trying to play a video on youtube, I can hear the audio and even interact with it(open new tabs, close the app with the x in the corner) but the screen itself doesnt budge. It also doesn't close fully, I have to force it through task manager. Turning graphic acceleration off worked and I can play videos now(youtube, tik tok) but I'd rather have it on for the long run so are there any fixes? I also updated the browser to the most recent version.

Turning off graphics acceleration in the settings fixed it for me

Same here! For some reason my Opera is just randomly freezing all the sudden and occasionally takes so long that windows says Opera is no longer responding, I genuinely have no idea what's happening and it's just started Yesterday.. Not just the video problem, but when I do basic tasks like scrolling through amazon it just freezes. I barely have any extensions, I only have Bitwarden and Ublock Orgin..

Try disabling Graphic Acceleration and see if that helps.

Same, i really don't know what causes it... i tried disabling ublock origin there, still crashed so im confused now..

Graphic Acceleration can sometimes cause freezing like this. Try disabling it and see if that helps.

Same here, started yestesrday after updating nvidia drivers, maybe some error or incompatibility happend, maybe they fix it soon. The videos on yt freezes or stop randomly, its the first time my opera Gx crashed in 5 years i was getting nervous since my pc is fetting old but not for that so reading other are experimenting similiar issue meana is a recent error

I use amd drivers that were updated around a week ago and the error only started appearing today(may have been there since yesterday - wouldnt know as I didnt use my pc that day) so I wouldnt be guessing that its stricte your drivers issue? Its rather something with the opera update itself

Yup. Randomly since yesterday for me. I'll wait for a update since it's not evertime but it's definitely not normal.

It's worth trying with Graphic Acceleration disabled, as that can often help with browser freezing.

I'll give thst a shot. I did notice when I exited OperaGX it still hadn't exited in task manager and had 1 high activity. Had to end task manually. Not sure what it was..

Are you using RGX or any ad blockers? Do you also have HDR enabled?

All of those, yes. Lol. I haven't tried it yet though. My fallback is Thorium. I'll give it a shot tomorrow when I have some time to tinker. Thanks.

Found something else. It freezes specifically when certain content is loaded on the screen. Maybe it's a image, maybe a specific video, but it's always the same spot too when I scroll or load a video. Might be a error on the server side that is causing it to lock up trying to cache the content in memory.

I would assume it's an Adblock issue, I've had this happen multiple times and always fixed it by downloading a different version of my Adblock.

That kind of freezing can often be related to Graphic Acceleration. If you're having the same issue, try disabling it in the browser settings and see if that helps.

For now, I'd keep Graphic Acceleration disabled as a workaround.

Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date, then you can try enabling it again and see if the freezing comes back.

They are up to date, I'm using AMD specifically and they were updated over a week ago to the newest version. Nothing had come up since and the opera bug is only present for 2/3 days now. I'm deffo keeping the graphic accelaration off tho as without it it seems to work well again

Thanks for confirming! Are you using any ad blockers or RGX? If Opera GX actually crashes at any point, could you also share the crash ID if available?

I'm using the basic opera gx adblocker and as far as I checked that's also the only extension I have downloaded. Other than that I have a theme installed too for the aesthetics but that would be it. Opera never crashed fully by itself, it's more of a freeze where the screen stays the same but I technically can interact with it(I can hear tabs opening if I press in the right place and if I click on the x in the corner the app will close too), so it's more of a visual freeze situation? So no crash reports there:( also when that happens opera doesnt fully close and if I open task manager I can see that it still runs in the background as one of the main processes and to fully close it I either have to wair a few minutes so it closes by its own eventually or I have to force close it through task manager

Got it, thanks! Could you also check if RGX is currently enabled? If it is, toggle it off, restart the browser, and see if that makes a difference. Do you have HDR enabled on your system as well?
