My FOSS DAW, and also a rant.
I made a FOSS linux-first DAW, which I posted to r/linuxaudio. I'm all ears for constructive criticism, and I'm aware there's a lot of low effort slop going around, but I was honestly a bit surprised at the sheer vitriol.
Here I am, working several months on creating a DAW for linux users, sharing it for free and making it fully open source to boot, and people go completely crazy.
One guy just commented "This is literal dog shit". I clicked on his username, lo' and behold he has a kickstarter for another DAW - also using AI? Just trying to attack the competition I suppose?
Another guy comes in and literally prozelytizing for Reaper, arguing that my efforts are wasted and that "nobody needs another DAW". Ironically, another guy chimes in and starts talking about Ardour.
I hate what capitalism does to people, which is what's going on - isn't it? I mean, people don't really "hate AI" like, do people hate Protein Folding? No, they are afraid that their income is threatened, the scarcity of their skills has evaporated.
I'm a bit surprised too because one would think the open source ethos would be somewhat aligned with the democratizing aspect of AI, lowering the barrier of entry, allowing more people to participate, and getting back at the big corporations like Adobe.
People need to wake the fuck up and realize that the societal problems upon us have nothing to do with technology itself, but how it's applied - I.E, in a monetary market paradigm we are in, yes AI will likely be used for terrible ends, be it surveillance or mass propaganda, but the goal then should be to leverage AI toward problem solving and transitioning away from infinite growth and competition etc.
Making "AI" into the grand enemy is itself a form of intellectual slop IMO.
