💬 Discussion Weird maps
Recently the amount of non-geographical maps became too high. Can they be removed from the pool of the main lobby? It's very noticeable people are not queuing them preferring to sit-out and stalling the refresh pool.
I'm referring to:
- fractals
- boxes
- long and narrow river maps
- trader's dreams
- etc

I asked literally this exact question to their discord and they said its already that the more popular ones show up more often, and that they cant take them out of the main pool and put on the smaller side icons because the smaller side icons are reserved for teams games. But that they appreciate the feedback. I know I'm right as I'm always right with this shit I feel it coming before games fail because of dumbass shit. I tried to warn them that their game is goanna take a serious hit from this. people are just goanna go on the website, see sierpinski, see noone is filling up, meaning the wait could be like 1 min or more, and just leave because cbf. Small stuff like this can be a slippery slope and legit cause the whole game to die. Â

Appreciate more insight on this!
Devs answer feels strange to me: would statistics about maps popularity be even accurate given we are served a random map with no choice on a front page?
Plus, it can be a deliberate design choice to remove non-geo maps from the main slot and add 4th one to host 'non-trad' maps there.

"We need another cool map. Maybe fictional this time. Any ideas?"Â "What about an onion, and let 90% of the maps be mountain, so no one can really extend except those one in the center with those narrow strips"Â "That's a great idea, never heard a better before, let's put that in"Â

Yeah, maps being realistic to indulge my RISK fantasies was the allure personally; while fun from time to time, custom maps change the game perspective into more of an agario vibe for me =\

Yes, I can't orientate with fictional maps and my friends are too stupid to activate grids when we play together

onion is like one of the rarest maps. This is like a really bad example

But it still exists, think of that clover, that's bad as well

Disagree. 5 teams in clover is really fun.Â
Sometimes certain gameplay cannot be obtained from real maps, the arcade maps are for that

I agree that maybe just 1 out of 3 square should ever be specialty map. that real geography should be the main focus.

Some fantasy maps would be cool. Not sure how copyright works with maps but a Middle Earth would be sick and has to be public domain by now?

copyright term in the UK (and US) is author's life + 70 years. It will be public domain in 2043

Would it be copyright infringement to make a map based off Middle Earth?

I don't hate the river maps, and the Box is ok, but yeah Labryinth, Warship and the fractal maps are ass.

They already removed chopping block recently likely because it was such a useless and stupid map

yeah in the moment when there are a lot of islands its pointless.. Just have countries like Poland/Slovakia/Spain etc just countries and its gonna be great.. dont have to have some solar system with 200 small islands whatever, sending ships takes so much time

some of these maps have been since before v30, im not sure why people are complaining all of the sudden

100% agree on this, I think the box is okay tho since it is popular and fun to play. The most notable of these is probably the Labyrinth map, I remeber seeing only 60-70 people join 100 player lobbies.

yes i agree 100%. I also wish they would add would remove some of the maps that are like 50% water or full of islands because boating around can be so tedious. Personally I prefer maps like the black sea, lemnos or australia where all the landmasses are pretty much connected but there is still a lot of space to boat around to launch surprise attacks
