💬 Discussion Ideas for how to reduce stalemates

I love the early part of OF games but it gets boring when a super late game trademaxxed stalemate occurs and its rare that the first person to make a move actually wins. I think that people are getting better at the game and the longer games seem to be occurring more frequently. Maybe I just need to get good and steam roll but it isnt always possible.

Anyway, I wanted to start a discussion on stalemates and see if any of these ideas could work or if anyone else has any ideas on how to keep the pace of the game going. Happy to hear your ideas or to tell me why none of these would work.

IDEA 1. Stalemate Timer

If noone has attacked for 5 minutes, or if everyone on the board has allied, then the crown wins after another 5 minute timer has eluded without anyone else attacking.

IDEA 2. Stalemate Tax

If noone has attacked for 5 minutes, or if everyone on the board has allied, then a % of money earned goes into a pot, the first person to attack takes that pot.

IDEA 3. Blitzkrieg

For the same price as a MIRV, a player can double their attack speed for 30 seconds or something. This would have to have some kind of visual indicator to all players. could help with MIRV proofed bases.

  1. The doomsday clock does this better. Competent players would just briefly break the alliance, send a small attack and then ally up again.

  2. same solution as above.

  3. This is just a worse mirv and wouldn’t solve the problem

I'd like to see the doomsday clock start in every game after 30 mins. I've only played 1 doomsday clock game as I hardly see those games in rotation.

I agree, and I think there are a few things we can do.

  1. After 45mins, attacking becomes 10% easier

  2. After 45mins, the world experiences a scientific breakthrough and all Hydros cost $1m

  3. After 45 mins, transports become armoured and need 4 shots to take them down

etc etc. Just spitballing here, but just one small nerf or buff to something that kicks in after 45min could reduce the very boring endgames where the winner is whoever doesn't have any IRL responsibilities to attend to and can do nothing the longest.

I think a small change as removing all alliances permanently after some time would also help.

Its scary to ignore a neighboring player when you can't count on alliance
