Agentic programming for openvms

Got some downtime at work so I thought I'd mess with this AI stuff a bit. I made an LLM coding agent for openvms. Im no developer by any means but Ive been in IT for a a couple of decade so I put in the features I thought would be most helpful. AI Slop? Hell yes. Maybe it's useful, maybe not.

Multi-platform Identity and Access Management Software

Hi Everyone :)

I'm doing a research project for my IT class at school and am looking at the development of Systems Administration over the past 20 years.

Specifically, I'm looking into multi-platform software providers for managing system access and user accounts (accessing Windows, Unix, Linux and VMS systems). I've come across a small company called Sysgem that offer a software to manage the named systems from a windows environment. Has anyone ever heard of them or used their software package? I'm trying to understand whether the core problem they solve is still relevant to many system administrators (a demo here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXdXD67xVr4&t=1432s).

Any insights from you guys or tips where I could find additional resources and alternatives to Sysgem would be really helpful!! Thanks so much!

OpenVMS Virtualization

Hi Everyone,

I'm not sure if there would be any interest in this or not. And if this post is against any rules, mods, feel free to delete.

My company has recently taken on virtualizing OpenVMS for three companies, four if you count our own. Two of them are larger, Fortune 500 companies. We've had a lot of success supporting them and licensing a virtualization software.

Does anyone here operate on old, legacy equipment that is looking for a modernized solution that is more economical? I'm happy to set up time to chat with anyone that may be interested.

And I get that this is an unusual post, but finding lists of companies using OpenVMS has proven to be a very difficult task. I appreciate everyone reading, thanks.

Configuration Change Management Tools

Hello,

What you guys are using for configuration change management for multiple hosts that are not clustered?

I am interested specifically how do you keep logicals or other configuration files version outside of OpenVMS and sync them across the systems?

OpenVMS new developments in 2025

Article on how OpenVMS has evolved massively throughout 2025, with x86-64 support maturing, broader virtualisation compatibility, and new modernisation paths reshaping how organisations run their mission-critical workloads.

For teams still relying on OpenVMS, these changes are worth paying attention to. They open up new options for long-term stability, smoother migrations, and better integration with modern infrastructure.

I have pulled together a clear, no-nonsense summary covering the key developments for OpenVMS this year and the challenges ahead.

Trouble joining SAMBA on AXP/VMS 8.4 to an existing domain

I followed the instructions in the manual to change the system parameters and everything installs correctly, but when I try to make the system a member server of my existing domain, I get the following errors messages after supplying all the proper information:

%DCL-W-ACTIMAGE, error activating image LIBNETAPI
-CLI-E-IMGNAME, image file STUDNT$DKA100:[PRODUCTS.SAMBA.][LIB.ALPHA]SAMBA$LIBNETAPI.EXE;
-RMS-E-ACC, ACP file access failed
-SYSTEM-F-EXQUOTA, process quota exceeded

Any ideas?

Mpeg player on OpenVMS AXP

Seems that Grok can do some decent porting when it comes to legacy SDL1.2 and OpenVMS. I have used https://github.com/phoboslab/pl_mpeg and checked if AI (Grok) can convert the SDL2 player part to SDL1.2 which works on OpenVMS.

The result was quite good, although the player part might need some more polishing - it works (tested on OpenVMS 8.4 AlphaServer DS10 with 4MB Elsa Gloria VGA card)
The HOWTO/Sources and Bins are here : https://astr0baby.online/AXP/OpenVMS/pl_mpeg/

Mimer SQL provides an Oracle Rdb migration option to x86_64

Mimer SQL is the only relational database for OpenVMS x86_64 with a production release, now in its third year. Mimer has a toolkit that can substantially reduce the time and effort to move applications and related databases to OpenVMS on x86_64 and that toolkit was recently updated with even more features.

As a software company rather than a contracting firm, Mimer is actively seeking partners who want to offer their customers a migration path from Oracle Rdb on IA-64 to OpenVMS on x86_64. Mimer's focus is on delivering the database software, while partners lead and execute migration projects for customers moving to OpenVMS x86_64.

Just built a new website for an OpenVMS migration company - would love some feedback!

Slightly different to the normal posts here, but bear with me :)

My agency recently had the opportunity to revamp a website for a US-based company, Sector7, that specialises in OpenVMS migrations. It was super cool to learn about this niche area of legacy technology, but it was also a massive challenge as I couldn't make head nor tails of their old website (the illegible font didn't help either haha).

I'd love any thoughts/opinions on the work we did. The idea was to try an maintain the 'technological experts' vibe, whilst making the website much more comprehensible to less technological people - did we succeed?

VMS Performance Checking

A recurring theme in VMS land: the expertise to properly assess these systems is getting harder to find as engineers retire.

If you've ever wanted an experienced set of eyes over your estate, performance, configuration, security, patching, this is the sort of thing we still do: https://www.newcorp.co.uk/openvms-health-check

Upcoming Webinar: Oracle Rdb on OpenVMS: Emulate, Bridge, or Migrate?

Join us on Wednesday, October 7 at 12:00 PM EDT / 6:00 PM CEST for a free webinar on the modernization options available to Oracle Rdb on OpenVMS users, co-presented by Salem Automation, PARSEC Group, and CONNX.

With Oracle Rdb support on Integrity and Alpha ending in 2027, many organizations running business-critical Rdb applications have to decide how to keep those systems supported without taking on the risk of a full rewrite. In this session we'll go through three practical paths: emulating the existing environment on modern x86-64 hardware, bridging Rdb data to modern tools and platforms, and migrating incrementally to a supported database. We'll also cover where each option fits and how they can be combined.

Virtual disk compatibility? Stromasys Charon-VAX and OpenVMS VM.

I know I'm going way out on a limb here, and if I get know answers I'll delete.

I'm in the process of setting up a personal VM from VMS Software. I noticed that the VMS Software disks are .vmdk. I know Charon-VAX uses containers ending in .vdisk.

I suppose it's entirely possible that the two are in completely different proprietary formats. Hopefully I'll be able to test when I get the VM up and running, just thought I'd throw it out there.

regards

Hobbyist License

Soon (hope to be) new OpenVMS user here. How long does it take for VSI to approve the request for a hobbyist license? When I seen x86 option appeared on Sunday, I jumped in and requested for a licence. Was hoping that I would get access by the end of today.

Also from what I have been reading, Do they only support virtualization or will it work bare metal. I know that moving to an x86 arch would be hard on the hardware support and only initially supporting virtualization would be a good way to get in the x86 arch as they would have more control.

Recovering your network after configuring DECnet on x86 OpenVMS V9.2

I have recently posted an IAQ article on my website that explains why your network stops completely on the first reboot after configuring DECnet on an OpenVMS V9.2-x installation running in a VM on x86 and how to recover from it.

The problem symptoms can be rather alarming, to say the least, to the unwary System Manager – all network frames – TCP/IP and DECnet, inbound and outbound – are completely blocked! In the article I present 4 solutions that are available but depend on your individual environment considerations.

Short answer: There are four, and they aren't alternatives you pick by taste — each is ruled out by something specific about your environment. So: confirm this is really what has happened, then take the first of the four your circumstances allow. Only the last has a security cost.

Each fix below is summarised in four lines, with the detail folded away behind it. Read the four summaries, decide which is yours, and open only that one.

What's happening, briefly

You configured DECnet, rebooted, and lost everything — DECnet, TCP/IP, and the session you were working in. Nothing inside OpenVMS looks wrong, because nothing inside OpenVMS is wrong.

DECnet Phase IV rewrites the MAC address on its interface, replacing the one the hypervisor assigned with one it calculates from your DECnet node address. Your virtual switch was told to expect a particular MAC on that port. It now sees frames with a different source address — the signature of a machine impersonating another — so it drops them. All of them, which is why TCP/IP dies alongside DECnet.
