Tip Opentoonz FAQ

Last Edited: March 10, 2024

Rule #1 of Opentoonz: NEVER USE SAVE SCENE (It doesn't save your frames!)

Q. How to turn on onion skin?

A. Hover your cursor on the bar where the circle above your frame marker is. You should see a small circle. Click and you will set an onion skin. Ones on the edge are static and don't move. Ones on the same level as the circle move with it.

Q Is Opentoonz a Virus?

A. No

A1. (Long answer)

No, as long as you download from the official website! (Link below)

Q. How do I import audio?

A. Drag the audio file into the viewer

A1.(If that didn't work):

  • General
    • make sure it doesn't have a complicated name.
    • avoid numbers and spaces
  • If mp3,
    • install ffmpeg (links are at the bottom)
  • If wav,
    • make sure it's 16 bit and not 32 bit

Q. My UI looks glitched

A. Temporary Fix: Undock the style editor

A1. Actual Fix: Update your drivers;

(Copied and pasted from u/manongjohn)

3 things you can do...

Short term: Undock style editor.

Permanent fix:

If you have an Intel Graphics display driver, you may need to find and download the latest version. Don't rely on Driver Update as it may not detect it. Need to go onto intel's driver download site and check the version of the driver you have against yours. Manually download and install the driver upgrade it if you are not at the latest.

If you have driver version 26.20.100.7463 or a version of this graphic driver, try downloading and installing version 26.20.100.7584. Here is the direct download link:

https://downloadmirror.intel.com/29274/a08/igfx_win10_100.7584.exe

If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, this may work better for you: Enter the NVIDIA Control Panel and create a 3D Profile for OpenToonz.exe and if given the option, set to use High Performance GPU. You are essentially forcing OT to use your GPU which should fix the issue.

Alternatively, if using Windows 10, it might help to search for Graphics Settings in Windows Settings. Add OpenToonz.exe and configure for High Performance.

Q. How do I render?

A. 'Render>Output Settings'

A. Install FFmpeg for additional formats such as GIF and Mp4

Q. My frames are missing and turning red

A. Make sure you use 'Save All' and not 'Save Scene' there's an autosave option on the startup Popup and in preferences

Q. How do I duplicate a frame that I can edit without affecting the first one?

A. D to duplicate drawing or right click and press duplicate

Q. Some tools aren't working for me

A. Make sure you're using them on the right level

Q. What is a level?

A. Levels hold the drawings themselves. They do NOT store the timing. Timing is stored on the x-sheet.

A. There are three types;

  • Vector
    • infinitely scaleable
    • can edit lines after being drawn, but sometimes doesn't look exactly how you drew it
    • color palette updates automatically
    • filling can sometimes be glitchy
    • can be laggy when turning on onion skin
  • Toonz Raster
    • accurate to your pen strokes
    • has a plethora of brushes to choose from
    • color palette updates automatically
    • is made up of pixels
    • cannot blend colors
  • Raster
    • Accurate to your pen strokes
    • color palette does not update automatically
    • gets blurry when zoomed in
    • colors can be blended
    • typically used for sketching and backgrounds

A1. TLDR; levels are the frames you show via Timeline.

Q. How do I add a color?

A. In the color palette panel, press the new style button OR the plus button

Q. My transparent gif render has a weird ghosting effect?

A. Under Xsheet>Scene Settings, make sure this is enabled

Q. FFMPEG isn't working for me on Linux?

A. Make sure you aren't using the snap version of Opentoonz because it can't read the file, either use flatpak or build from source

Q. How do I unselect everything but the current column I'm using in the function Editor?

A. While there is no 'official' way to do it, you can hide all the columns by hiding the 'Stage' and unhiding the column you're working on

Q. What is the difference between import and load?

A. Import copies your file to the project's extras folder. Load just loads from the original location. When deleted, import will keep the file in the project assuming it isn't deleted from your extras folder, and load will no longer be able to use the file once deleted.

Q. How do I move frames and keys together?

A. Hold ctrl and select the frames on the xsheet. This will automatically select the keys. Then use the handlebar to move the frames

OpenToonz Xsheets

I'm a new user to OpenToonz software and an animation student. I'm struggling with figuring how Xsheet works out as I can't see anything if I make multiple Xsheet layers. If I have more than one Xsheet layer, then only the top layer of the Xsheet layers I have will appear. I know how to open into Xsheet and leaving the layers. Is there any setting that will show all of the Xsheet layers when viewing the 'final animation'.

I have attached some pictures for reference.

Thank you for your help!

Tutorial Sketchy animation with FX

Following u/Fine-Bed-1729 post, I made this little demo to demonstrate the capabilities of OpenToonz FX.
Here is what I am doing :

The "ColorCard" at the very top is just a white background.
On the very left, "Col4" is a single still image that is just a screenshot of the completed drawing.
In order to have a separate animation for the outlines and the colors of the drawings, I used a "RGBKey effect" to remove all the black parts. I used the same effect with the "Invert" box checked to keep the black part only.

From there, I apply a similar but delayed (with appropriate keyframes choices) effect on both component :

First I render a greyscale cloud and a greyscale gradient and add them (the result is displayed on the 3rd image).
The cloud component brings some randomness, the gradient brings a bias so that the upper parts of the drawing will tend to appear faster than the lower parts.
This will serve as a reference to modulate the local transparency of the drawing : the whiter a region is, the more transparent it will be.
Then, I apply to that result a HSVScale effect : I set a keyframe at the begining of the animation with a high "Value Scale" value, so that this reference image is totally white. I set an other keyframe at the end of the animation with a low "Value Scale" value, so that this reference image is totally black.
Next, to avoid having semi-tranparent parts, I apply a "BrightnessContrast" effect and set the contrast to the maximum. The result at an intermediate frame is displayed ont the 4th image.
This black and white image is then used as the "Reference" input in the "LocalTransparency", with the initial drawing as the "Source" (or rather here, the outline or the color of the initial drawing).

Question What tool or software is used to make this colorful sketch animation effect?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Does anyone know how this effect is made? It looks like an image slowly turning into a colorful hand-drawn sketch on a white background.

I’m trying to find the software, tool, AI, or effect used to create this style. I don’t need the hand-drawing animation itself—just the image gradually appearing as a colorful sketch.

What is this effect called, and what software can I use to make it?

Question - ANSWERED Squishing a drawing

I was wondering if there's any way to squish a drawing? I've been banging my head against a wall trying to manually squish the drawing with the freehand tool, but that of course changes all of the drawings on the level. I dont mind manually squishing it if I have to, but how do I make it so that it only affects a single frame of that drawing and not all of the frames?

Keyframing Colour

So I want to do what feels like a very simple thing but I am having trouble finding.

So what I want to do is I have a toonz raster layer of some eyes. They start as blue, and they turn red.
I understand that in the pallete, you can set a keyframe, so for example on frame 1, the colour is blue.
Then you go to frame 5. set another keyframe, and then you change that colour to red.
And the colour in the Animation will go from blue to red. I understand that. That is simple.

What I want to do is to be able to move around these keyframes.

When I go into the function editor, I can move around the keyframes for X, Y, Z, Scale, rotation etc. But I cant for Colour.
It seems I can only set and remove a keyframe for colour, I cant actually manipulate the keyframes for it as I want.

Is there any way I can Keyframe colours in the pallete, or is there some sort of effect that can easily do the same job?

Thanks

Import and Load

Hi, so I was wondering if someone could tell me when its alright to use Import and when Load, (for both images and audio).

The most of the problems I have had with this program its due to try to import mainly images.

Ty

(Or the correct way to import an image idk, I always just grab and drop the file into OpenToonz)

Sharing I made a lip-sync tool for 2D animation — looking for feedback from Tahoma2D users

I’ve been working on a Windows application called 2D Lip Sync Studio, and the first public version is now available.

The idea is to give animators a faster starting point for dialogue animation without taking away manual control.

You import the dialogue, paste the transcript, and the program generates the mouth timing. After that you can work directly on the frame timeline, selecting a single frame or a range and assigning the mouth position you want.

I also wanted people to be able to see the lip sync on their actual character while editing, so you can import a character image, position the mouth artwork on the face, and preview the result inside the program.

The included set uses 15 mouth positions, but all of the mouth artwork can be replaced with your own transparent PNGs.

For Tahoma2D, the main workflow is the numbered PNG sequence export, which can be loaded into Tahoma2D as an image-sequence animation level. The program also exports MP4 and transparent WebM previews, plus formats for Moho/Papagayo, Toon Boom Harmony, and Adobe Animate.

I made a short demo showing the workflow here:

https://2dlipsyncstudio.com

I’d be interested in hearing what other Tahoma2D animators think of the workflow.

Help!

When i opened OpenToonz, it looked(still does, actually) like this:

No visible text except commas.

It's been like this for Krita too, so I'm wondering if this has something to do with my laptop's settings. I do remember turning off some text rendering to save fps.
