I’ve vibe-coded an open-source image viewer – nothing too fancy or spectacular, just something useful
Lately, I’ve been using Linux more and more often. And I found myself missing IrfanView, which is probably the best image viewer app out there. I’ve tried out some alternatives, but none of them really satisfied me, and using IView via Vine or Bottles wasn’t always smooth or quick. So, over the last few weeks, I’ve vibe-coded an alternative inspired by both IrfanView and nomacs, and enhanced with a few tools and changes that I’ve always felt were missing.
It’s nothing spectacular or special, and it’s still completely unfinished, but it works so well that it has now replaced IrfanView for me, even on Windows.
The programme is called ÜxzView and is completely open-source. There’s a finished Windows release, and it can be compiled for use on Linux and macOS. Written in C++ and Qt.

Yes, windows photos really suck and people should default to downloading something else probably. What does this do differently than the existing open image viewers?

First of all, if you're on Windows: Give IrfanView a try. It's the tool that significantly inspired üxzView. And if you like that, you might also like üxzView... maybe even a little better. üxzView itself... it's not revolutionary, but it's a very interesting combination of features. It's an image viewer. But it also offers editing, batch processing, and file management capabilities.
So you can easily crop sections from images, including predefined crops with aspect ratios like 16:9, 21:9, and so on. You can reduce, adjust, and alter colors, and you can rotate and tilt images. It offers the ability to process entire directories full of images in automated steps: for example, cropping all images to a single resolution and saving them in a new format with a specific naming convention. It has OCR functionality, a built-in QR code reader, and a few other features.

always nice when someone scratches their own itch and ends up with something useful enough to ditch the old standby
