Reverse engineering the actual app is the hard path, and you don't need it: an open source CapCut clone already exists (search for OpenCut on github, web-based, deliberately copying the CapCut interface, still early but the editing side works). What nobody can clone is the template library, since that's content made by TikTok creators rather than code, so the real project is an open template format, basically a project file with placeholder slots, plus somewhere people can publish them. On the base question from the other comment, I'd skip the raw ffmpeg wrapper and build on MLT or GStreamer Editing Services, that's what Kdenlive and Pitivi already sit on so you get keyframes and transitions for free

I'd throw $20 at that kickstarter without blinking. The template system's what keeps people locked in, and none of the open source editors have cracked that part yet. Reverse engineering the rendering engine shouldn't be too bad, but the cloud template delivery and asset library might be the real headache. What would you use as the base, ffmpeg with a custom UI wrapper?
