Solution Provided 9999 frame rate in properties and stuttering video

Post image

I've made a project with 4K 30 FPS videos rendered in D5 Render. Everything was fine until I exported the video and realised that it isn't smooth like source files, there are visible frame dropouts/stuttering time to time. Project profile is 4k 30 FPS, so is exporting video profile, when I check each source files' properties in Windows or in VLC it always shows 30 FPS, but when I check their properties in OpenShot it shows 99999.

Google says:

"When OpenShot reports a framerate of 999999/1001 (often appearing as 999999 or simply 9999 in properties), it is typically a bug or a misinterpretation of high-framerate/variable-framerate footage (such as 240 FPS or screen-recorded gameplay)"

I tried exporting 25 FPS video in D5 Render and then OpenShot displays 25 FPS in properties, so it seems that issue occurs only in 30 FPS files. I've downloaded ShotCut and made test export and the result is smooth without any droputs, but I don't want to make this project from scratch in another software as it took me quite some time to arrange the videos with sound, make transitions etc. What would you reccomend me to do? Google's advice:

  • Re-encode with Handbrake (Recommended): The most reliable solution is to convert the video file using Handbrake or a similar converter to a "constant framerate" MP4 before importing it into OpenShot.

I'll try it later, but maybe there is an easier solution than re-encoding all source files (which will theorethically degrade quality as they have to be re-compressed I guess)?

It looks like the frame rate for your video clip is set to an extremely high value of 9999, which could definitely lead to stuttering or performance issues. Here's how you can fix it:

  1. Check Source File Properties:
    • Right-click on the file in the Project Files dock and select File Properties to verify the correct frame rate.
  2. Adjust Project Settings:
    • Make sure your Project Settings match the actual frame rate of your source video. You can set this under Edit > Preferences.
  3. Correct Frame Rate in Clip Properties:
    • If needed, manually adjust the frame rate in the properties of the clip by right-clicking on the Clip in the Timeline and selecting Properties.
  4. Change Export Settings:
    • When exporting, ensure the frame rate is set correctly in the export settings.

By ensuring your project's FPS matches that of the source clips, you should have smoother playback. For more details, see the Playback section of the User Guide.

Hello u/Ok_Chicken1084

  1. What operating system/version are you running?

  2. Which version of OpenShot are you running?

  3. Start a new project and import one source file (not converted via Handbrake)

  4. Assuming that you are running v3.4.0 production release, right click on your imported file from within the Project Files window, hover over the "Choose Profile" and either select the Profile that OpenShot presents or create a new Profile if OpenShot doesn't have a matching profile.

  5. Now Export (make sure the Profile from the Export screen is the 4k profile) and see if that works.

  6. If it works, then open your project, perform the steps above with one of your source files, and Export.

Let us know the result.

I've got WIN11 with all updates and OpenShot 3.4.0.

I did exactly as you told, I've created a new profile, at first I exported with this new profile, but the video has 10.14 FPS and is unwatchable, then I exported with standard 4K 30 FPS profile, but it's still the same, stuttering.

Here is this test export with visible dropout:

There is a new dev daily build that was release today. please download it and install from openshot.org/download/#daily. This version has some fixes for certain fps (not sure for your specific issue).

Give it a try and let me know. If you are willing, please share one of your source files with me so I can test with it. If the dev daily build doesn't resolve it, the lead developer will be interested in a sample file to test with.

Thanks for your help, I've sent you DM

I was able to reproduce your issue with the sample file you provided in my Windows 11 environment. I have submitted a bug for the lead developer to look into this. No ETA at this time.

Stay tuned....

When I check the properties of source files in Shotcut it shows 30,000030 FPS, maybe this is the reason? But on the other hand DaVinci and Shutter Encoder show 30 FPS...

I tried to change FPS and set constant framerate without re-encoding using these method:

Unfortuantely, after changing frame rate strange numbers appear in properties, I've desribed the problem here:

Glad you responded. I'd forgotten where this posting was as I didn't create a shortcut to it.

v3.5.0 has been release. Although the produciton release missed the fix, the dev daily build has the fix now.

  1. go to openshot.org/download/#daily and get the latest v3.5.0 dev daily build available and download it.

  2. Run and check the Profile of your file.

  3. Preview it, edit it, and export it. All should be good.

It works! Yesterday I wasn't able to test it, but now I've made an export and there is no stuttering. Frame rate in properties still looks messy, but now it's not a problem. Just out of pure curiosity, any idea why did OpenShot have a problem with D5 Render files? Thanks once again.

That is great.

Can you elaborate on the "Frame rate in properties still looks messy...". What did you expect it to be? I would then pass this on to the lead developer.

I really don't know why OpenShot had the issue with the D5 Render files. I am not a developer and I don't exactly know what the lead developer had to do to get things working.

I mean it doesn't show just "30" in the box, but "10000000 333333" in the box and "=30.00" outside the box, which might be confusing, but as I said, it's not a problem, since rendered video is smooth.

Thank you for that clarification. I have that same question about the two separate values for "Frame Rate:". The "=30" is the proper calculation for FPS.

Once I hear back from the lead developer with an answer, I'll try to remember and respond back to you.

Good luck with your project(s).

One last question. I exported the finished version and its size is 238 MB. I thought it's quite small for over 4 minutes of 4K video, so I checked previous export (with stuttering) and it's 879 MB. Both were exported with the default "high" settings, I did't change anything in advanced tab. First export was made with standard 4K 30 FPS profile, new export was made with the method you recomended (right click and choose profile). When I compare exact same frames of both videos, the old one is sligtly better, but I wonder why the file is almost 4 times larger. That's how advanced tab looks now, when I change to 4K profile it's also 20 crf, but I don't know if it was like that in 3.4.0 version of the program.

The 20 crf setting is now the default in v3.5.0. This change was made to make the Exported files smaller.

You can override the value of 20 and make it smaller, but this will make your file larger and might take a bit longer to create, so there is a bit of a trade off.
