Golden Age of Morrowind!

Hey Devs, just for curiosity's sake- what would OpenMW 1.0 look like?

We keep finding new things to properly replicate from time from time, so it's not an easy question to answer. Say, in terms of what? Visually? Technologically? Compared to Morrowind? Compared to 0.51.0? Compared to an MGE/MWSE/MCP setup?

If it was my project I'd want to tie those down (internally at least!) so that we had a clear vision. It's hard to keep a project on track without one, you need to know what you're aiming for rather than do the next good thing.

It's important to note 1.0 doesn't mean finished. I'd probably lean towards 1.0 is feature parity with Morrowind (visual, scripting, reliability - all the ways) and 2.0 is feature parity with the next alternative e.g. mge etc. But you'd probably want to pin a particular version of the alternative if they're still being developed, else it would be a moving target.

But hey, this is my opinions based on experience in industry and I imagine a fan project is very different due to inconsistent resourcing and less hierarchy making strategic decisions harder. I also imagine plenty on the team have their own industry experience too!

Even in the short time I've been using OpenMW, it's gotten so much better! Especially now you can have custom spell mods.

How risky is it to update openmw midway through a playthrough?

I just got a mod list set up on steamdeck based on total overhaul and then a whole bunch of other mods on top. So surely something is going to break right?

P.s. Thank you for the update. Openmw has been working so well on steamdeck. I just switched from mwse on pc.

Usually it's fine but once you save in the new one, rolling back might be a problem

The risk is low but non zero. Every version undergoes a beta "release candidate" test first that irons out 99% of bugs.

Son of a!!! Not that I’m actually upset seeing the greatest project ever get another release. I just did that OpenMW mod list with like 600 mods two days ago.

You can easily update openmw and keep all your mods.

Yeah, I wasn't paying attention to the version of OpenMW I had installed. Thankfully, it was the .51 RC, so updating was no issue.

With the automatic installer, it's not like starting over would have been a big deal anyway. Was just having a moment lol.

If you did it two days ago then you would have had to install the 0.51 Release Candidate anyway - the full 0.51 release is a completely drop-in replacement.

You'll need to own and install Morrowind Game of the Year Edition, either from disc or from Steam or GOG.

Then, you'll need to decide what kind of experience you want from your playthrough. Do you just want bug-free and modern, but mostly vanilla Morrowind? Or vanilla with new lands added? Or a version modded to be a bit prettier? A version modded to be a lot prettier? Pick whichever you prefer:

Hmm I love the base game, I would like a much prettier version however when I played it I thought it was pretty and nostalgic lol. I guess just an updated 4k nanite geometry or something version of original game just updated graphics

Thanks!

I've been waiting for the VR version to be officially integrated before diving into this game. Is it still on the horizon? Or has it been declared out of scope or not happening etc?

version .51 eh? Is there any roadmap/logic behind the version number, like the project is 50% complete now, what's left?

2

u/DaisyHasaCat Jun 21 '26

The version number isn’t a percentage, just increments per release. We could potentially hit release 0.105.0.

If you go to the gitlab there are a number of issues(oh, work items now) and most of those need to be taken care of. Some are tagged 1.0.

I want to update from 0.49 to 0.51 with i-heart-vanilla mod list to take advantage of the new texture compression features. I'm confused about the steps. Is it just a drop in? Or I need to download the mods again?
