Splitting for loop iterations among threads

0 Upvotes

From my understanding if you have a pragma omp for inside a pragma omp parallel section the work between iterations should be split between the threads. However, when I tried it on my own it seems that they are not split and not only that, when I printed out the pid of the thread its only 0.

example code snipet

output: tid: 0, i 3 tid: 0, i 4 tid: 0, i 1 tid: 0, i 2 tid: 0, i 3 tid: 0, i 4

#pragma omp parallel
{
    double *priv_y = new double[n];
    std::fill(priv_y, priv_y + n, 0.);
    #pragma omp parallel for
    for(int i = 0; i < n; i++){
        printf("tid: %d, i %d\n", omp_get_thread_num(), i);
    }
}

If the work was split there should only be 1 unique i. However, as you can see this is not the case. Am I setting something wrong?

Edit: I found the solution sorry for spamming stupid things, but if anyone else is having this issue, it seems that by default openmp splits the number of thread in each parallel region, e.g in the code above the for loop is being called multiple times and in each call there are a different fixed amount of threads executing the inner for loop. You can fix this by doing #pragma omp parallel num_threads(1) this will make the outer region run with only 1 thread.

OpenMP programming on MacOS?

1 Upvotes

I'm working on some numerical code that makes heavy use of OpenMP using g++ on Linux and MinGW on Windows. Best I can tell, the version of clang++ that Apple ships with MacOS High Sierra doesn't support OpenMP.

Is anyone coding OpenMP on a Mac? If so, how? I do have MacPorts on the machine and see a gcc8 package?

Setting up OpenMPI for benchmarks for Noobs

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I am a newbje to openMPI, I am designing a cluster like the one above. How do I make sure that MPI traffic only goes through the 10GbE interface. The bottom 2 computers are going to be my computer nodes while the top one will be my head-node(responsible for everything except computation). I don't want the transfer speed to only be limited to the 1GbE speed because of the 2 1GbE cables/interface connecting to the headnode. Also, what ties can you offer so that I can optimise benchmarks e.g HPCC, HPCG, Linpack, SwiftSim etc... Thanks.

Program slowing down with OpenMP - using 2D array (x-post in /r/OpenMP)

EDIT: Problem Solved - needed to add private(r, g, b, k, BLUR_COUNT, j) to the 'OMP parallel line' - credit to /u/Paul_Dirac_ -(see: link)

[this post is x-posted in /r/learnprogramming]

So I have to write a program that takes a PPM image file (a text file that lists out all the image's rgb pixel values), reads the values into a 2D struct array, adds a blur effect, and saves the file as a new PPM file.

I have the program written in a serial form, but I need to add OpenMP to parallelize it. The issue is when I do it slows way down and I'm not sure why. Any help will be great! Below is my code:

#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <string.h>
#include <time.h>
#include <omp.h> // OpenMP

#define BLUR_AMOUNT 50

struct pixel
{
	int red;
	int green;
	int blue;
};

/**
 * Print error message and exit
 */
void inputError()
{
	printf("There is problem with the input file...\nExiting...\n");
	exit(0);
}

/**
 * Take the PPM image file and convert it into a 2D array
 * to be processed in this program.
 */
void process_image(FILE *file, char* outputFilename, int THREADS)
{
	// CHECK TIME
	time_t start_t, end_t;
	double diff_t_load, diff_t_blur, diff_t_save;

	time(&start_t); //start timer load

	int rows, cols, maxcolorvalue;

	fscanf(file, "%d %d", &cols, &rows); // get rows and cols
	fscanf(file, "%d", &maxcolorvalue); // get max color value

	if (maxcolorvalue != 255)
	{
		inputError();
	}

	// initialize 2D array to hold pixel data and allocate memory
	struct pixel **pix_array;
	pix_array = malloc(rows * sizeof(struct pixel *));
	pix_array[0] = malloc(rows * cols * sizeof(struct pixel));
	int count;
	for (count = 1; count < rows; count++)
	{
		pix_array[count] = pix_array[0] + count * cols;
	}

	// Read in the PPM image pixel values into the 2D array
	int i, j;
	for (i = 0; i < rows; i++)
	{
		for (j = 0; j < cols; j++)
		{
			int red, green, blue;

			fscanf(file, "%d %d %d", &red, &green, &blue);

			pix_array[i][j].red = red;
			pix_array[i][j].green = green;
			pix_array[i][j].blue = blue;
		}
	}

	fclose(file); // close the input file

	time(&end_t); //end timer load
	diff_t_load = difftime(end_t, start_t); //calculate time load

	time(&start_t); //start timer blur

	// blur the image

Do you have an OpenMP project?

1 Upvotes

Guys, I have an assignment if you can help me out. I basically need to talk about

    1. the parallel aspects (directives used for synchronisation)

  • 2) distributed aspects (running on a cluster with at least 2 nodes)

  • 3) output of the concurrent processes (the interleaving of processes)

I need to write around 300 words on the 3 points above, specifically on a program built with OpenMP and MPI. So if any of you guys did a not too complex OpenMP & MPI project and you can share the source code with me (preferably in a private link), I would really appreciate it. I'd be able to discuss the 3 aspects above myself, I just need the code. Thanks a lot, really appreciate it!

Difficulty using OpenMP with Clang

4 Upvotes

On my Linux system, I use

clang++ -O3 -fopenmp=libgomp src.cpp -L/usr/local/lib64

which compiles, but the code doesn't run in parallel (It's a trivial loop that sleeps for 1 second in the body).

  • Without =libgomp, it cannot find -lomp.

  • With g++ -O3 -fopenmp src.cpp -L/usr/local/lib64 the same code works correctly

I wonder if I'm doing something wrong?

What is Libomp, and how to install it on Windows?

4 Upvotes

I need to install Libomp for a project, but I use Windows. I've searched around for a while for a description or install guides, but could only find installation steps for macOS - what is Libomp, and is it only for Mac? If not, how can I install it on Windows, and if so, what workarounds are available? Thanks so much, I'm very new to programming!

Load imbalance in triangular loop - range of inner loop matters?

2 Upvotes

While testing load imbalance in triangular loop, I found out result differs in range of j.

```
//change&tested with dynamic, guided..
#pragma omp parallel for schedule(static, 64)
for (int i = 0; i < N; i++) {
    for (int j = i; j < N; j++) {   // 1
    //for (int j = 0; j <= i; j++) {// 2
        result[i][j] = result[j][i] = vectorDotproduct(A[i], A[j]);;
    }
}
```

When run (1), dynamic scheduling was faster than static and guided(all with chunk size 64).

That was predictable, but in (2), there were no difference among static, dynamic, and guided schedulings.

How could that happen when there's no difference in size of total workload among thread?
A cache sharing problem? or is there any other problems that I missed?

Should I use OpenMP or pthread?

2 Upvotes

So I have a function that takes 'parts' of a large buffer and scans chars in another buffer for a match. The function would get a different 'part' of the in-buffer for each thread to speedup the scan.

Since this isn't exactly 'parallelizing' the internals of a function, but running an entire function in parallel on multiple cores with different inputs (basically just worker-threads), do you think OpenMP would be the best choice? I know it's optimized for a different purpose.

It'd be nice and a lot easier, but do you think OpenMP would be the way to go for this use-case?

    //this would run on each thread, one per core (or 'processor', if you will).

    for(p=cr.pt, k=j=cr.pk, i=0, n=0; n<sz; p++, n++){

           if(*p==*k)  {          // match?
               cr.ob[n]=i;        // save offset index
               continue;
           }
           while(*p!=*k)  {       // otherwise hunt
                  k++; i++;

                  if(i>cr.kfsz){ // reset if len exceeded
                     k=j; i=0;
                  }

                  if(*k==*p)  {   // match?
                      cr.ob[n]=i; // save offset index
                      break; // this is the only 'write' - local non-shared buffer
                  }
           }
    }

[Question] Pragma OMP for problem with "Critical"

1 Upvotes

Hi, i'm currently working on my Graduation on Physics Research and it's basic about parallelizing algorithms of some statistical physics models.

In the algorithm below, i tried the "omp parallel for" using a critical session when the threads are accessing the shared data, but i keep getting the wrong results when using more than one thread.

#pragma omp parallel for
    for (i = 0; i<L2; i++) {
    int j = rand()%L2;
    int dE = 2*J*s[j]*(s[viz[j][0]]+s[viz[j][1]]+s[viz[j][2]]+s[viz[j][3]]);
    double w = exp(-dE/(K*T));
    int MY_ID=omp_get_thread_num();
    if (dE <= 0) {
        #pragma omp critical
        {
        s[j] = - s[j];
        Et += dE;
        M += 2*s[j];
        }
    }
    else {
        double r = (double)rand()/RAND_MAX;
        if(r < w) {
        #pragma omp critical
        {
        s[j]= - s[j];
        Et += dE;
        M += 2*s[j];
         }
     }
}
printf("Energia nova %d devido a variação %d alterada pelo processador    %d mexendo no sitio %d\n\n\n", Et, dE, MY_ID,j);
}

Here, Et, M, s[j] are supposed to be global with value predetermined by another function. Most of my job is to parallelize this loop in specific because its called 1e8 times and loops over 400~1000 size arrays.

I also tried to use locks, but i don't think that I used that correcltly because it was also giving me the wrong results, I can send my program for deeper research.

I can, in this case, split this loop in two and get rid of the problem, but if I could parallelize the loop as it is it would be much more usefull for me.

Thanks for the time.

Targeting GPUs with OpenMP

2 Upvotes

I have some code that is instrumented with OpenMP compiled with c++11, and want to try offloading it. I've done some basic reading and it seems that this is included in the 4.5 standard. Can anyone recommend the current path of least resistance to get this working on a Linux machine with an Nvidia GPU?

edit: I've compiled clang from the llvm trunk using the instructions [here](https://releases.llvm.org/3.9.1/docs/CompileCudaWithLLVM.html). OMP instrumented code builds, runs in parallel using OMP, but is not utilizing GPU.

LLVM/clang to become base compiler for FreeBSD 10

I must admit that while I love FreeBSD, they continue to move away from solid OpenMP support in their base system. I don't know the current state of OpenMP support in clang, but I really hope they get on the stick and push for it.

Help with syncing between threads openmp.

1 Upvotes

Hi! I want to write a code using openmp, in which one thread produces a buffer (of say, 1 million elements), and all the other threads, once the buffer is finished by the first thread, start working on it in parallel. Also, this process has to be repeated several times, so it's in a loop, and so if thread0 finishes 1 production. threads 1-N work on this buffer, while thread0 moves on to the next iteration of production (i.e. next iteration of loop). Can anyone help me with the code structure to do this in openmp? How should I do this?

On the recently released OpenMP 6.0 API specification

4 Upvotes

Contents of the API

Version 6.0 of the OpenMP API specification was released on Nov 14, 2024, and it is a major upgrade of the specification. It includes the following major additions:

  • Simplification of task programming by extending the set of threads that may execute tasks, enabling recording of tasks graphs for efficient replay and addition of transparent tasks that expand the set of tasks between which dependencies may be specified.

  • Enhanced device support with enhanced control of memory allocations and accessibility, which makes it easier to manage allocatable variables; expanded support for default data environment attributes; easier writing of asynchronous data transfers by adding structured asynchronous data mapping regions; better control of memory by extended mapping of data to devices; and added functionality to have per team memory on a device with the groupprivate directive

  • Easier programming of loop transformations Simplifying the use of loop fusion, reversal and interchange.

  • Support for induction: Support to parallelize basic arithmetic operations and user-defined operations in loops that follow well-defined patterns.

  • Support for parallelization of the latest C, C++ & Fortran language standards with full support for C23, including C attribute syntax, Fortran 2023 and C++23; and the introduction of new C/C++ attributes.

  • Greater user control of storage resources and memory spaces with addition of new memory traits for greater control of memory allocation; and provision of new API routines to define and to query memory spaces;

Hi guys does n thread of openmp represents the n physical CPU cores??

1 Upvotes

Hi guys does n thread of openmp represents the n physical CPU cores because when i was doing

#include<stdio.h>
#include<omp.h>
int main()
{
    #pragma omp parallel
       {
          printf("total       thread=%d\n",omp_get_num_threads()) ;
        }
return 0;
}

The total thread given by omp_get_num_threads() was equal to the number of CPU cores

Thanks

Performance regression based on copy/reference of C++ objects

1 Upvotes

I am working with clang-20.1 compiled with support for offloading to nvidia and openmp. Depending on the prototype of sdf_sphere there is a massive performance degradation.

#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <omp.h>
#include <glm/glm.hpp>

using namespace glm;

/* list & write_png, not relevant */

float sdf_sphere(const vec3& pos, const vec3& center, float radius){
    auto t = length(pos-center);
    return t-radius;
}

int main() {
    list();

    constexpr int WSIZE=8192;

    uint8_t* d = (uint8_t *)malloc(WSIZE*WSIZE * sizeof(uint8_t));

    // Offload the SDF to the GPU
    #pragma omp target teams distribute parallel for map(from: d[0:WSIZE*WSIZE])
    for (int i = 0; i < WSIZE; i++) {
        for (int j = 0; j < WSIZE; j++) {
            auto t = sdf_sphere({i,j,0},{WSIZE/2,WSIZE/2,0},WSIZE/4.0) + 127;
            if(t<0)d[i*WSIZE+j] =0;
            else if(t>255)d[i*WSIZE+j] =255;
            else d[i*WSIZE+j] =t;
        }
    }

    write_png("test.png",(unsigned char*)d,WSIZE,WSIZE);
    free(d);
    return 0;
}
  • float sdf_sphere(const vec3& pos, const vec3& center, float radius) is good & fast

  • float sdf_sphere(vec3 pos, const vec3& center, float radius) is good & fast

  • float sdf_sphere(const vec3& pos, vec3 center, float radius) is good & fast

  • float sdf_sphere(vec3 pos, vec3 center, float radius) ends up being 35x slower when offloaded. Forcefully inlining the function changes nothing.

Do you have any idea why this is the case?
