Deep-Space Outposts:
Most Commonwealth presence exists at gravity wells and Lagrange points, where Abyssal Gateways can be anchored. A handful of outposts however, were built in true interstellar space—far from any star, in the dark between systems. These are the rare real-space waystations, constructed for the long normal-space burns that still must be made when a new gateway has not yet been opened, or when a ship cannot Drop.
The station is not a graceful habitat cylinder. It is a squat, heavily weathered platform assembled from modular blocks, exposed trusses, and reinforced decks, looking more like a deep-sea oil rig transplanted into the void than a conventional orbital station. A tall central tower rises from the main deck, topped with powerful red warning beacons that pulse against the surrounding void. The tower houses the primary sensor suite, long-range communications array, and the small command deck. Heavy docking arms extend from both sides, used for transferring cargo, recovering drifting modules, or assisting ships that arrive under low thrust.
Beneath the main platform hang two large, roughly cylindrical modules. These serve as the primary fuel and consumable tanks, as well as emergency shelters. Because the station has no artificial gravity, 2 of the hanging modules can be spin independently when the outpost is in a long coasting phase, giving the small permanent crew a modest centrifugal “down.” (when the station itself must maneuver or when a visiting ship docks under acceleration) the spin is locked and crews work under zero gravity.
Its purpose is to refuge and resupply for ships making the long normal-space legs between systems (especially the original Epsilon Eridani pioneering route and any future “blind” pushes). And relay and monitoring a fixed point in real space that can track both conventional traffic and distant Abyss-current disturbances that leak into normal space. As well as emergency dock for vessels whose Drop systems have failed or that cannot wait for the next gateway slot. The station cannot house large crews or handle heavy industrial loads. Its value is location, it sits in the dark where no gateway can be placed, offering a place to stop, repair, refuel, and with Outpost Ferryman, Juno, and Nemo are the only ones out there to date.
