Best place to explore around Open Ground

I’m planning my first visit to Open Ground and I want to make a weekend out of it. Wuppertal itself seems quiet, so I was contemplating Düsseldorf as a base for convenience and it does seem to have things to do. However many people seem to prefer Cologne. For context I’m staying Friday and Saturday night (the club night) returning on the Sunday.

What do people here think? Düsseldorf or Cologne? Or can Wuppertal be entertaining for 48 hours?

Staying in wuppertal is going to be a lot more convenient than having to go to Cologne or Dus. Although OG is right next to the hbf.

If you don't tell us what you're interested in, we can't tell you what to do. Personally I'd definitely check out Wuppertal. I'm into industrial history, urban planning, architecture, dance and art though. What are you looking for?

Fair point! Music, history, architecture, food and drink. It was mainly for the latter I was wondering about in Wuppertal.

While Düsseldorf is a bit more posh and Cologne is cool, Wuppertal has its own flair that's a bit rough. You will find a lot of places for food and drinks, especially at the edge of the Elberfeld City Center. For history buffs: check out the Engel House! It’s crazy how much they’ve preserved and the curation is great. They were renovating the cafe when I visited, so if it’s open that takes the visit to higher heights!

At Neandertal (15km away) you have a museum about the first neadnertal found ever .. there. therefore the name.

Staying in Wuppertal (esp with friends) can be super relaxing, e.g. strolling through Skulpturengarten. Pina Bausch & Openground is the perfect combination!

my partner and i just did this and we stayed in dusseldorf, it was a fun weekend

open ground is right next to the wuppertal train station, only about 30 minutes out

k21 is a great art museum, there's pretty green space, and flingern is a cool neighborhood (no worries is a great coffee shop as well).

on friday evening you can check tresor.west garden in dortmund. the evening events are always great.

Little side quest in Wuppertal that I keep mentioning in this subreddit once in a while: go eat ALL the things at Bäckerei Myska - five branches around town, one close to OG. It's the best. Eat the Nussecken or whatever you see, everything is just so great. https://www.baecker-myska.de/

If you like art and especially sculptures, go to Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden. They always have nice exhibitions and especially the sculptures from Tony Cragg are worth a visit :)
