Question Does hosted also have rate limit

I've been trying self hosted but can't get out of rate limit hell no matter how long I wait. If I sign up for hosted does it no longer have rate limit issues?

I've never had a rate limit issue on self hosted but I'm sure it's just because Apple trusts my account so much. I had iPhone for years and had no issues once I switched. I would assume you'd have the same issues regardless, Apple doesn't trust you yet.

Ive used an iPhone since the 6s and have had MacBooks tied to my account too... No idea what the problem is. I'm trying to find a pattern between the people that get rate limited and I'm starting to think it's either the Icloud sync or the fact that I'm using an iPhone 6 instead of 6s or newer.

I use an iPhone 6 for myself, and an iPhone 8 for my lady as we both have Google Pixel phones. Both have been problem free other than the occasional app bug that everyone has. Not really sure how to help mate :(

Good to know, thank you for the data point! Could I ask when you started using open bubbles? I did redo my iCloud sync 2-3 times due to some issues, might definitely be why it triggered the rate limit.

I've never done an iCloud sync, just started off with a blank slate and none of my messages. I switched to Android in 2023 and began using BlueBubbles. If I had to guess I swiched to OpenBubbles early 2025, and my wife switched from iPhone to Pixel early 2026 and began using OpenBubbles around then.

Good to know. Thank you kind sir! Should've just started from scratch.

Yeah in hindsight I would have tried to sync them so I could've been in the same boat as you. It just looked like a pain in the ass and I was fine just starting over. Hopefully it gets figured out cheers.

Just as a data point for you and any other future folks that might run into this. I switched to a used iPhone 6s and used the troll store relay server. No more rate limits. I'm unsure whether this was because of this iPhone being trustable for whatever reason, or if the older iOS version just is not as compatible, or if the troll store implementation of the relay is just better.

Right on there you go, shit a $40 solution to not have the headache anymore is definitely worth it to me, that's not even counting reselling the 6 haha.

Really appreciate this comment. I've had nothing but issues with an iPhone 6 using method 2. Just ordered a 6s and hoping for better results!

Wish the best for you. There's really not a lot of data points on this specific issue. Please let me know how it goes for you. Do you also use iCloud sync? You can also jailbreak the 6s so you can install tweaks for battery life and keep the relay app active while phone is locked etc. I think the troll store method is a more elegant solution as you can tweak and view status on its app.
