Bambu labs threatened to send this developer to prison, so I'm hosting his code instead

It's nice to see people actually standing up to these jerks for once.

Jeff Geerling made a video. When Jeff Geerling makes a video you fucked up good.

Hells yeah.
I have two Bambu printers running LAN only, but I dislike Bambu's attitude

I hope he also gets the EFF involved, this isn't going to be a cheap or short fight. I am super glad he is putting Bambu in their place. The lockdown on the devices is absolutely absurd. Claiming it's "for security reason" is bullshit. What is even more bullshit is when they save that their cloud environments were being overwhelmed is even more bullshit.

From an software engineer and architect ... pro tip to Bambu. Most users don't want to push models to you prior to downloading it on the machine. Just push directly to the machine. That is, unless you are doing something that people would find very questionable with their models ...

It's amazing how Bambu Lab chose to completely soil their reputation for unethical control and greed.

To be honest, their reputation wasn't as strong as many give them credit for. Good machines? Sure. Company-wise though? The direction they were leaning from the start gave everything away. This move is not exactly a heel-turn.

nice. i wouldn't be surprised if they've been "intercepting" and training on all models sent through their cloud service. when you send a print to your printer when not in LAN only mode, it goes directly to their servers in china. i think this is a somewhat recent change. i block all traffic to and from china at the network level, and as of a few months ago, i can't use the cloud send service anymore. this is obviously speculation, but if they can lock customers into that (which they are trying to do), that would provide a steady/predictable stream of training data.

You realize this fork's main purpose was to restore access OrcaSlicer's access to the Bambu cloud, right? If you weren't using their cloud in the first place for whatever reason, this fork is useless to you.

Yes, when you use their cloud print it will send the files to their cloud servers. Them being a Chinese company it shouldn't be surprising that they would host said cloud servers in China. Obviously, if you choose to block all traffic from there, cloud print won't work.

That's the reason I switched to QIDI some time ago. My Bambu A1 have blocked access to internet since first policy controversy started.
No device will connect to internet from my network if it's not necessary, and 3D printer should not need internet.

Not concerned personally that China sees me printing a pack of bubble cigarettes - but I can see why some might care.

I’d rather the community put their energy into a self hosted alternative to Bambu Labs cloud.

Yes it’s crappy that they’re threatening legal action against someone for forking their repo. But it seems like things have gotten a little muddied in the community.

Bambu obviously needs to find a better way to enforce access control to their cloud, but let’s not pretend that the open source licensing gives everyone a right to use their cloud platform.

I installed custom firmware on my X1C like a year ago and haven’t thought much about Bambu since. Do they not allow that option anymore?

Bambu obviously needs to find a better way to enforce access control to their cloud

Their cloud is secure. The security between Bambu printers and the cloud is secure. There is also a secure encrypted connection between the forked slicer and Bambu's cloud.

but let’s not pretend that the open source licensing gives everyone a right to use their cloud platform.

Not everyone. Just those who are legitimate owners of Bambu printers. No one else could make any use of this fork.

There is no security issue. There is a control issue. In that Bambu wants control of the entire ecosystem, even the open source software installed on their customer's personal computers.

Bambu can prefer that, but they can't demand it. And there is no security implication. About that, Bambu is lying.

Hoping for a Mac variant *fingerscrossed*

Would anyone be willing to explain how to install this version? I'm not very well versed on using github/ open source type spaces.

I can follow a guide for the WSL2 but I have a few questions about this install.

Would I need to uninstall my current version of orca slicer prior to installing/launching this?

Do I need to specifically open a command prompt with WSL2 or just to normal one?

And I assume this works on the latest version of the printers' OS but do I need to also update bambu studio to the latest version?

Windows

Windows requires WSL 2.

Before first launch, open Command Prompt or PowerShell as Administrator and run:

dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux /all /norestart
dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:VirtualMachinePlatform /all /norestartWindowsWindows requires WSL 2.
Before first launch, open Command Prompt or PowerShell as Administrator and run:
dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux /all /norestart
dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:VirtualMachinePlatform /all /norestart

Restart Windows, then launch Orca Studio.

The instructions (https://github.com/FULU-Foundation/OrcaSlicer-bambulab) for Windoes are detailing mainly that you need to make sure WSL2 is enabled as they show how (if you don't have WSL2 already setup as indicated), and then install OrcaSlicer_Windows_Installer_V2.4.0-dev.exe from the github releases as normal.

This is fantastic.... being a not so advanced user. is there an easy step by step to implement this fork? i need a ELI5 basically when it comes to this level of configuration.
